Studies In Hysteria

Josef Breuer,Sigmund Freud
""Studies in Hysteria"" is a groundbreaking book co-authored by Josef Breuer and Sigmund Freud, originally published in 1895. The book is a collection of case studies that explore the nature of hysteria and its treatment. Breuer and Freud's work challenges the traditional medical understanding of hysteria as a physical ailment and instead argues that it is a psychological disorder caused by repressed emotions and traumatic experiences. The book includes detailed case studies of patients who suffered from various symptoms of hysteria, including paralysis, convulsions, and amnesia. Through these case studies, Breuer and Freud demonstrate the effectiveness of their new treatment method, which involved the use of hypnosis and the ""talking cure"" to help patients confront and process their repressed emotions. ""Studies in Hysteria"" is considered a seminal work in the development of psychoanalysis and has had a significant impact on the field of psychology and psychiatry.Nervous And Mental Disease Monograph Series No. 61.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego

*Sigmund Freud
In Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego , Freud explores theories on group dynamics and how psycho-sociological forces shape personality. He argues that an individual derives security from being part of a group, what he terms 'the Herd Instinct.' However, this feeling of belonging leads to a loss of the individual's consciousness. Other topics covered include Being in Love, Suggestion and Libido, and Identification. This new 2018 edition of Group Psychology and The Analysis of The Ego is a revised translation of the James Strachey version, in modern American English.

Dream Psychology How the Interpretation of Dreams Can Illuminate the Desires of the Unconscious

Sigmund Freud
Dreams, in Freud's view, are all forms of "wish fulfillment" - attempts by the unconscious to resolve a conflict of some sort, whether something recent or something from the recesses of the past (later in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Freud would discuss dreams which do not appear to be wish-fulfillment). Because the information in the unconscious is in an unruly and often disturbing form, a "censor" in the preconscious will not allow it to pass unaltered into the conscious. During dreams, the preconscious is more lax in this duty than in waking hours, but is still attentive: as such, the unconscious must distort and warp the meaning of its information to make it through the censorship. As such, images in dreams are often not what they appear to be, according to Freud, and need deeper interpretation if they are to inform on the structures of the unconscious.

Totem and Taboo

Sigmund Freud
"Totem and Taboo" is a collection of four essays by Sigmund Freud that were published together in German in 1913. Freud sought to apply his theories of psychoanalysis to the study of anthropology and early human history. The four essays cover a wide range of topics. In "The Horror of Incest", Freud examines the varied and common rules in primitive cultures that limit contact between members of the same family. In "Taboo and Emotional Ambivalence," Freud posits that primitive cultures and their attitudes about magical objects are similar to the behavior of people with neurotic psychological conditions in the modern world. In "Animism, Magic and the Omnipotence of Thought," Freud draws comparisons between the primitive belief in magic and magical animals to obsessive and compulsive disorders. Finally, in "The Return of Totemism in Childhood," Freud, influenced by one of Charles Darwin's theories about the male-dominated arrangement of early human societies, looks for parallels with his own Oedipus complex theory in the structure of primitive cultures. A classic and influential work of early psychoanalysis, "Totem and Taboo" is an important read for students of both psychology and social anthropology.

Beyond the Pleasure Principle

Sigmund Freud
First published in 1920, "Beyond the Pleasure Principle", by world-renowned psychologist Sigmund Freud, marks a major turning point in the author's theoretical approach. Prior to this work, Freud's examination of the forces that drive people focused primarily on the sexual drive, or Eros of man, the life instinct to reproduce that is innate in all humans. Freud had attributed most of human behavior to the seeking of sexual pleasure. However, in "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" Freud moves away from these creative and pleasure-seeking impulses as the only motivator of human action to instead examine the impact on human psychology of the death drive, or Thanatos, which Freud describes as "an urge inherent in all organic life to restore an earlier state of things". Freud still believes the pleasure principle is the more dominant force, but argues as well that unpleasant experiences have a great influence on the mind and are often the source of repetitive, compulsive behaviors. Freud also revisits his earlier theory that dreams are a form of wish fulfillment as he examines the reliving of traumatic events in dreams. One of Freud's most controversial and influential works, "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" remains an important and fascinating read. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality

Sigmund Freud
The traditional story about the historical origins of Freudian psychoanalysis implies that the Oedipus complex was part of Freudian theory from the very beginning. However, in this first edition of Three Essays on Sexuality, first published in 1905 and never before translated into English, we find no reference whatsoever to the Oedipus complex. Is there a Freudian psychoanalysis that is not Oedipal? This first version of Freud's Three Essays articulates just such a non-Oedipal psychoanalysis. As such, it still has a definite 'emancipatory' potential; Freudian psychoanalysis is not Oedipal in its very nature. It is only from 1909 onwards that psychoanalysis tends to become a sophisticated defence of what Freud first called the 'popular opinion' about sexuality. It was precisely this 'popular opinion' that psychoanalysis originally was meant to deconstruct. Is there a Freudian escape - that is an escape that remains not so much within Freudian orthodoxy, but at least within its inspiration - from this impasse? If Freud has respected more systematically his own original thesis, could it be that the Oedipus complex wouldn't be the shibboleth of psychoanalysis? Not only is this first edition less Oedipal than is generally believed, but it also contains the elements for thinking a 'non-Oedipal' psychoanalysis; a Freud against Oedipus.

On Dreams

Sigmund Freud,W. Leslie (William Leslie) MacKenzie,M. D. (Montague David) Eder

In this landmark work, Freud delves deeply into the nature of dreams, presenting his revolutionary theories on their significance as windows into the unconscious mind. It provides insight into the historical development of psychological thought and continues to be a cornerstone for understanding the complex interplay between our conscious and unconscious lives. The Future of an Illusion

Sigmund Freud
First published in German in 1927 and in English in 1928, "The Future of an Illusion" is Sigmund Freud's seminal work on the psychology of religion in which Freud discusses the history of and psychological basis for religion. Chief amongst the arguments of the work is that religion is ultimately the result of the psychological struggle against the ultimate fate of life, death. So strong is the desire to give meaning to life that our ancestors created their various myths long ago. Freud further explains the psychological desire to bring about order in a chaotic world and the consequential demand for an organizing force that gives power to religion. Once empowered organized religion perpetuates itself through the strength of tradition and a culture which penalizes doubt, Freud argues. A clearly atheistic polemic against religion, "The Future of an Illusion" presents some compelling arguments for the phenomenon of religion and what future place there might be for it in a modern society. Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis

Sigmund Freud
There exist, of course, few more famous figures in the field of psychology than Sigmund Freud. As the founding father of psychoanalysis, or the clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst, his impact on the field of psychology cannot be overstated. This short work, "Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis", is a collection of a series of lectures given by Freud at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts during September 1909 and was published as a collection in 1910. This event, at which Freud was awarded an honorary doctorate, received widespread media attention and marked the beginning of public popularity for Freud and his ideas. The publication of the lectures brought an even greater public attention to his theories. "Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis" predates the more extensive collection "Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis", which is a series of lectures given by Freud from 1915 to 1917 and which delve more deeply into the topics of dreams, the unconscious mind, and the source of neuroses. "Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis" is an excellent and accessible introduction to Freud's influential work in which he summarizes his basic ideas and speaks on the foundations of psychoanalysis. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of Harry W. Chase.

Moses and Monotheism

Sigmund Freud
2010 Reprint of 1939 Edition. In Moses and Monotheism, Freud speculates that Moses was not Jewish, but actually born into Ancient Egyptian nobility and was perhaps a follower of Akhenaten, an ancient Egyptian monotheist. Freud further suggests that Moses led only his close followers into freedom during an unstable period in Egyptian history and that his followers subsequently killed Moses in rebellion afterward. Freud speculates that the guilt from the murder of Moses is inherited through the generations; this guilt then drives the Jews to religion to make them feel better.

An Autobiographical Study

Sigmund Freud
2010 Reprint of 1927 First English Edition. Professor Freud's autobiography, first published in English in 1927, is written in his usual forceful, straightforward and frank style, which has now become so familiar to readers of psychoanalytic literature. The autobiography as a whole is really a condensed account of the development of the psychoanalytic concepts as they unfolded themselves in Professor Freud's mind, and he says this much of it and adds that "no personal experiences of mine are of any interest in comparison to my relation with that science."

Studies on Hysteria

*Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud born Sigismund Schlomo Freud; 6 May 1856 - 23 September 1939) In creating psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process. Freud's redefinition of sexuality to include its infantile forms led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as the central tenet of psychoanalytical theory. His analysis of dreams as wish-fulfillments provided him with models for the clinical analysis of symptom formation and the underlying mechanisms of repression. On this basis Freud elaborated his theory of the unconscious and went on to develop a model of psychic structure comprising id, ego and super-ego. Freud postulated the existence of libido, an energy with which mental processes and structures are invested and which generates erotic attachments, and a death drive, the source of compulsive repetition, hate, aggression and neurotic guilt. In his later work Freud developed a wide-ranging interpretation and critique of religion and culture.Though in overall decline as a diagnostic and clinical practice, psychoanalysis remains influential within psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy, and across the humanities. As such, it continues to generate extensive and highly contested debate with regard to its therapeutic efficacy, its scientific status, and whether it advances or is detrimental to the feminist cause. Nonetheless, Freud's work has suffused contemporary Western thought and popular culture. In the words of W. H. Auden's 1940 poetic tribute, by the time of Freud's death, he had become "a whole climate of opinion / under whom we conduct our different lives."
