The Last Woman in His Life

Ellery Queen
"Murder for the millions. John Levering Benedict III had more of everything than most men. More money, more mansions, more cars, and most of all, more women--including three ex-wives with little in common but their extraordinary physiques. For Ellery Queen the question was, which one of these beauties had bashed in Benedict's skull with a hunk of iron statuary? The clues were many, but enigmatic. A low-cut evening gown, a pair of women's white gloves, and a show girl's green wig. All had been planted at the scene of the brutal crime. But by whom, and for what purpose? And what was the hidden meaning of "home," the last word of the dying man? And most important, who was the last woman in John Benedict's life? These, Ellery knew, were all pieces in a bizarre jigsaw puzzle. But what strange picture they'd make when put together, not even he could say."--

A Room to Die In How could a man have been murdered when he was found alone in his study, a gun in his hand, and the door locked from the inside? It had to be suicide, the police figured. Although there was no suicide note, there was a letter proving conclusively that Roland Nelson, over the last several months, was being blackmailed. But to his daughter, Ann, whom he had seen only spasmodically since he had left her mother when Ann was a baby, there were unanswered questions. She was convinced that her father could never have killed himself. Before she found the answers, two people were brutally garroted with a wire, one of them in her own apartment.

The Detective Short Story A Bibliography

Ellery Queen
Excerpt from the Introduction: For a long time we declined the invitation of Messrs. Biblo and Tannen to reissue The Detective Short Story: A Bibliography. The book originally appeared in 1942, and since then nothing has been changed in the book, nothing subtracted, nothing added. Of what earthly use, we asked Messrs. B and T, is a bibliography that has been out of date for 27 years? Mssrs. B and T insisted that the book was a milestone in its field, that copies of the original (and only) edition were virtually unobtainable, that many collectors, readers, libraries, booksellers, and even some critics, wanted the book however long it has been out of date – in short, that this unique work should be rescued from biblivion. So we agreed to its reissue in this handsome offset edition. From the moment the original edition went to press in 1942 we foresaw the possible desirability of future revised and updated editions. So we began to collect notes on newly published volumes of detective-crime-mystery short stories, on corrections of errors (oh, yes, there were some) in the 1942 edition, and on newly discovered titles published before 1942.
