Measure Theory

Paul R. Halmos
Useful as a text for students and a reference for the more advanced mathematician, this book presents a unified treatment of that part of measure theory most useful for its application in modern analysis. Coverage includes sets and classes, measures and outer measures, Haar measure and measure and topology in groups. From the reviews: "Will serve the interested student to find his way to active and creative work in the field of Hilbert space theory." --MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

Introduction to Hilbert Space and the Theory of Spectral Multiplicity

Paul R. Halmos
2013 Reprint of 1951 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The subject matter of the book is funneled into three chapters: [1] The geometry of Hubert space; [2] the structure of self-adjoint and normal operators; [3] and multiplicity theory for a normal operator. For the last, an expert knowledge of measure theory is indispensable. Indeed, multiplicity theory is a magnificent measure-theoretic tour de force. The subject matter of the first two chapters might be said to constitute an introduction to Hilbert space, and for these, an a priori knowledge of classic measure theory is not essential. Paul Richard Halmos (1916-2006) was a Hungarian-born American mathematician who made fundamental advances in the areas of probability theory, statistics, operator theory, ergodic theory, and functional analysis (in particular, Hilbert spaces). He was also recognized as a great mathematical expositor.

Algebraic Logic

Paul R. Halmos
2014 Reprint of 1962 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In "Algebraic Logic" Halmos devised polyadic algebras, an algebraic version of first-order logic differing from the better known cylindric algebras of Alfred Tarski and his students. An elementary version of polyadic algebra is described in monadic Boolean algebra. This book addresses some of the problems of mathematical logic and the theory of polyadic Boolean algebras in particular. It is intended to be an efficient way of treating algebraic logic in a unified manner.

I Have a Photographic Memory

Paul R. Halmos
Paul R. Halmos, eminent mathematician and brilliant expositor, is also a snapshot addict. Between 1943 and 1988, Halmos photographed mathematicians, their spouses, their brothers and sisters and other relatives, their offices, their dogs, and their carillon towers. From the 6000 or so photographs in his collection, Halmos has chosen about 600 for this book. The pictures are candid shots showing mathematicians just being themselves. The accompanying captions, in addition to identifying the subjects, contain anecdotes and bits of history that reveal Halmos's inimitable wit, charm, and insight. This delightful collection of mathematical memorabilia has become a favorite browsing book as well as a valuable historical record. It is now available in a paperback edition.
