Prince Grigory Potemkin was Catherine the Great's lover and secret husband. An outstandingly gifted political counselor, he won the Crimea, founded the Black Sea Fleet, and made Russia a Near Eastern power. Volatile, handsome, and always astonishing, his magnificence enchanted and scandalized Europe. With all new research, Sebag Montefiore brings to life Potemkin's blazing love for Catherine, lays to rest the smear of the "Potemkin Villages", and restores him to his place as a colossus of the 18th century.
