Totem and Taboo

Sigmund Freud
"Totem and Taboo" is a collection of four essays by Sigmund Freud that were published together in German in 1913. Freud sought to apply his theories of psychoanalysis to the study of anthropology and early human history. The four essays cover a wide range of topics. In "The Horror of Incest", Freud examines the varied and common rules in primitive cultures that limit contact between members of the same family. In "Taboo and Emotional Ambivalence," Freud posits that primitive cultures and their attitudes about magical objects are similar to the behavior of people with neurotic psychological conditions in the modern world. In "Animism, Magic and the Omnipotence of Thought," Freud draws comparisons between the primitive belief in magic and magical animals to obsessive and compulsive disorders. Finally, in "The Return of Totemism in Childhood," Freud, influenced by one of Charles Darwin's theories about the male-dominated arrangement of early human societies, looks for parallels with his own Oedipus complex theory in the structure of primitive cultures. A classic and influential work of early psychoanalysis, "Totem and Taboo" is an important read for students of both psychology and social anthropology.

On Dreams

Sigmund Freud,W. Leslie (William Leslie) MacKenzie,M. D. (Montague David) Eder
Sigmund Freud's "On dreams" offers an essential exploration into the enigmatic world of human dreams, a subject that captivated the pioneering mind behind psychoanalysis. In this landmark work, Freud delves deeply into the nature of dreams, presenting his revolutionary theories on their significance as windows into the unconscious mind. He introduces readers to the foundational concepts of dream interpretation, arguing that these nocturnal narratives are not random but rather coded expressions of our deepest desires, fears, and suppressed thoughts. This seminal text illuminates Freud's groundbreaking approach to psychology, laying crucial groundwork for the field of psychoanalysis. It provides insight into the historical development of psychological thought and continues to be a cornerstone for understanding the complex interplay between our conscious and unconscious lives. For anyone interested in the history of psychology, the enduring mysteries of the human mind, or the profound implications of dream interpretation, "On dreams" stands as an indispensable and timeless contribution to the study of self. The Future of an Illusion

Sigmund Freud
First published in German in 1927 and in English in 1928, "The Future of an Illusion" is Sigmund Freud's seminal work on the psychology of religion in which Freud discusses the history of and psychological basis for religion. Chief amongst the arguments of the work is that religion is ultimately the result of the psychological struggle against the ultimate fate of life, death. So strong is the desire to give meaning to life that our ancestors created their various myths long ago. Freud further explains the psychological desire to bring about order in a chaotic world and the consequential demand for an organizing force that gives power to religion. Once empowered organized religion perpetuates itself through the strength of tradition and a culture which penalizes doubt, Freud argues. A clearly atheistic polemic against religion, "The Future of an Illusion" presents some compelling arguments for the phenomenon of religion and what future place there might be for it in a modern society.
