North Atlantic

Michael Colby,James Fradrich
Full-Length Play "Playful entertainment-Outstanding Production of the Year!" -Show Business North Atlantic is a uniquely affectionate and comic valentine to the classic style of Rodgers & Hammerstein, set in the land of igloos and ice! On a mysterious and remote island (somewhere on the opposite side of the globe from "South Pacific"), Honey Snodgrass and Melanie Fong, all-American members of the Ioway branch of the Teaching Corps, arrive to teach Eskimo children their 'modern ways.' As with any good R & H classic, the girls soon find unexpected romance, unintentional bigotry, and the dream ballet to end all dream ballets! With every ridiculous cliché thrown in for good measure, this charming family musical takes its origins and springboards into its own idiomatic lunacy. (Play: 5F, 5M, Ensemble)

Entrepreneurial vocations: learning from the callings of Augustine, Moses, mothers, Antigone, Oedipus, and Prospero

Krieger, Martin H.
Originally Published by Scholars Press Now Available from Duke University Press In this interdisciplinary work, Martin H. Krieger examines the entrepeneur in terms of modes and ideal figures drawn from religion and classical studies. In so doing, he provides a means or vocabulary with which entrepreneurs can articulate their experience of risk, commitment, and judgment. In addition, by establishing a comparison between the entrepreneur and the figures he utilizes from religious and classical literature, Krieger generates surprising new ways to look at the careers of such traditional figures as St. Augustine, Moses, Oedipus, Antigone, and the characters of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Both an exercise in the humanities and in the pragmatic world of business, Krieger's work offers an intriguing methodology for how humanistic learning can be applied to the real world concerns of the entrepreneur. A teaching and self-study guide to Entrepreneurial Vocation is included as an appendix for those wishing to adopt the text as a classroom resource.

Pied Piper Fantasy: Flute and Orchestra Full Score

John Corigliano
(Study Score). This seven movement flute concerto, premiered in 1981, is based on the Robert Browning story-poem of the piece's title. Corigliano recharacterized the Piper as an adolescent, who begins the score with power and control: it's only in discovering his personal theme that he's able to lead both the rats and the children. The finale of the concerto is driven by the Piper's desire to protect the children from parents who are as negligent of their young as they are dishonest in their business dealings. His is not just a siren song but a call to sanctuary. Pied Piper Fantasy was later expanded to the full-length ballet score The Pied Piper , premiered by American Ballet Theater in 2001. 40 minutes.

A general theory of equilibrium selection in games

Harsanyi, John C.
The authors, two of the most prominent game theorists of this generation, havedevoted a number of years to the development of the theory presented here, and to its economicapplications. They propose rational criteria for selecting one particular uniformly perfectequilibrium point as the solution of any noncooperative game. And, because any cooperative game canbe remodelled as a noncooperative bargaining game, their theory defines a one-point solution for anycooperative game as well.By providing solutions - based on the same principles of rational behavior- for all classes of games, both cooperative and noncooperative, both those with complete and withincomplete information, Harsanyi and Selten's approach achieves a remarkable degree of theoreticalunification for game theory as a whole and provides a deeper insight into the nature ofgame-theoretic rationality. The book applies this theory to a number of specific game classes, suchas unanimity games; bargaining with transaction costs; trade involving one seller and severalbuyers; two-person bargaining with incomplete information on one side, and on both sides. The lastchapter discusses the relationship of the authors' theory to other recently proposed solutionconcepts, particularly the Kohberg-Mertens stability theory.John C. Harsanyi is Flood ResearchProfessor in Business Administration and Professor of Economics, University of California, Berkeley.Reinhard Selten is Professor of Economics Institute of Social and Economic Sciences: University ofBonn, Federal Republic of Germany.

A Mediterranean emporium: the Catalan kingdom of Majorca

David Abulafia
Situated astride the trade routes of the western Mediterranean, the Catalan kingdom of Majorca has long deserved attention. It was established under the will of King James I of Aragon, who conquered Majorca in 1229, but was ruled from 1276 to 1343 by a cadet dynasty. In addition to the Balearic Islands the kingdom included the key business centres of Montpellier and Perpignan, and other lands in what is now southern France. It was also home to important Jewish and Muslim communities, and was the focus of immigration from Catalonia, Provence and Italy. This book emphasises the major transformations in the trade of the Balearic Islands from the eve of the Catalan conquest to the Black Death, and the effect of the kingdom's creation and demise on the economy of the region. Links between the island and mainland territories, and as far afield as England and the Canaries, are analysed in depth.

The last Yankee

Miller, Arthur
"Leroy Hamilton is seated in the visiting room of a state mental hospital where his wife is having treatment. Forty-eight years old, he is dressed in Ivy League clothing and is looking through a magazine. He is a veteran of the visiting room, as his wife has been hospitalized a number of times over the years. Mr. Frick, a sixty-year-old solid businessman, enters. His wife is having treatment for the first time. Frick engages Leroy in conversation and it becomes obvious that he needs to be put at ease regarding the whole situation of his wife's illness and resulting hospitalization. The men compare very different stories of how the illnesses began and how they have settled. Leroy tells Frick that the secret to handling the situation is not to feel sorry for yourself. Frick listens, yet the conversation begins to disintegrate as the men disagree about the relative merits of the state hospital verses a private one. Frick admires Leroy's pride in keeping his wife at the state-owned institution, however, he does so condescendingly. It turns out that the men have known each other before from a different context--Leroy (a descendant of Alexander Hamilton) is a carpenter that uses Frick's lumber yard. Frick becomes even more condescending to Leroy and the conversation completely disintegrates into the kind of talk that Leroy says is driving people crazy."--
