An Essay on Conduct and Education. Recommended to the People Called Quakers, by John Fry. the Third Edition. with a PostScript to People of Other Perswasions

John Fry
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. The History of Normandy and of England

Francis Palgrave
Excerpt from The History of Normandy and of England, Vol. 3 My Dear Sir, You have honoured me with your kind permission that I should explain, in a few words addressed to yourself, the circumstances in which the Third and Fourth Volumes of this History are now published. The Fourth Volume was printed throughout (with exception of the "Summary") several years since. Some corrections in it were afterwards planned by my father; but it represents, on the whole, his maturest judgment on the events narrated. The completion of the Third Volume (postponed for personal reasons to the composition of the Fourth), had formed the author's occupation during the leisure hours of the last four years of his life. Great part had been written previously; and it was his wish to revise the whole, incorporating in it the fruits of additional study and of visits to the scenes of the principal events described. Death, however, in July 1861, stayed his hand when this revision had been completed only to the end of Chapter III. From this point onwards (Chapters IV to XV), the book has been edited by me. Linear Drawing Showing the Application of Practical Geometry

Ellis A. Davidson
Excerpt from Linear Drawing: Showing the Application of Practical Geometry This work is intended firstly as a text-book for teachers in Schools of Art and Science, Training Colleges, National and other schools, and secondly as a manual for self-instruction for artisans and the public generally. It is impossible to over estimate the importance of a knowledge of Geometry, forming as it does the basis of all the mechanical and decorative arts; and therefore the first volume of a Technical Series has been devoted to this subject, from which, as from one common highway, branches may diverge, adapted to the various industrial arts. In order to fit the course of instruction, not only to the young, but to adults whose elementary education may be deficient, the author has deemed it best to assume, in the first instance, utter ignorance on the part of the pupils. Thus it will be seer, that in Problem I, no geometrical terms, such as "describe an arc," &c., are used, the learner being merely told to place the steel point of his compass on a given spot, whilst tracing part of a circle with the pencil leg. War and the Arme Blanche

Erskine Childers
Excerpt from War and the Arme Blanche I have read with the greatest interest Mr. Childers's illuminating book "War and the Arme Blanche." My opinion of the subject with which it deals is already so well known throughout the army that I need not labour to say how entirely I agree with the author's main thesis; indeed, anyone who will take the trouble to read "Cavalry Training" (1904), will see that I anticipated the arguments which he has so ably developed. This being so, it is not surprising that I should view the regulations laid down in "Cavalry Training" (1907), with some concern. Let us consider briefly what the history of this question - the comparative value of steel weapons and firearms for Cavalry in war - is. Until within the last few years our Lancer regiments depended entirely on the lance and sword, while other Cavalry regiments depended almost entirely on the sword. This was inevitable because of the inaccuracy and short range of the smooth-bore carbine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Times History of the War in South Africa, Vol. 1 1899-1900

L. S. Amery
Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, Vol. 1: 1899-1900 In the present volume I have endeavoured to set before the reader a full account of the relations between the Imperial Government and the Dutch Republics in South Africa, of the causes that led up to the final crisis, and of the protracted negotiations which preceded the outbreak of the great South African War. No study of the military operations themselves can be complete without at least some slight knowledge of the political situation of which the war was the outcome. The ultimatum, the invasion of Natal, the rebellion in Cape Colony, the part played in the war by the Uitlander corps, the stubbornness of the resistance offered by the Boers, the annexation of them territories, arc all matters which can only be understood in the light of previous events. This, and the fact that no adequate connected account of all the circumstances leading up to the war, has as yet appeared, will, I venture to think, be sufficient justification for prefixing this introductory volume to the series of volumes which arc to narrate the course of the military operations. The subject has been treated, as far as possible, from the historical point of view, though at so short an interval of time from the events themselves it is impossible altogether, on some occasions, to avoid a controversial tone.
