Inhalation in the Treatment of Disease

Jacob Solis Cohen
"Inhalation in the Treatment of Disease" by Jacob Solis Cohen, originally published in 1876, offers a detailed exploration of inhalation therapy as practiced in the late 19th century. This historical text delves into the therapeutic use of inhaled substances for treating various respiratory ailments. Cohen provides insights into the techniques, apparatus, and substances used during this period, making it a valuable resource for understanding the evolution of pulmonary medicine. The book covers both theoretical underpinnings and practical applications, making it relevant to historians of medicine, researchers interested in alternative therapies, and anyone seeking a glimpse into past medical practices. While medical knowledge has advanced significantly since its original publication, "Inhalation in the Treatment of Disease" remains an important historical document, illustrating the approaches and beliefs of a bygone era in healthcare. Not illustrated. 1878 Excerpt: ...yards? It is not in a sanitary point of view a nuisance, having no smell, but it is undoubtedly an eyesore to my house, and the dust is sometimes blinding. Nimrod. An eyesore is certainly not within the Public Health Act merely on that account. On the facts above stated the right of action (if any) would only be for the private injury and annoyance.--Ed. MEDICAL OFFICERS--PARLIAMENTARY GRANT. Sir,--With reference to the repayment made to guardians out of the Parliamentary grant in respect of salaries of Poor-law medical officers, etc., should the repayment include the cost of medicines and medical and surgical appliances; and if so, what is the authority for the repayment? D. Half the cost of medicines and appliances is supposed to be included in the Parliamentary grant. The authority is, we believe, the general authority vested in the Local Government Board.--Ed. Further Remarks on the Sewage Question and F. I/ille's System for the Disposal of Sewage and Seivagc Sludge. By F. Hille. London: Warburton and Co., Gracechurch Street, E.C. This pamphlet is simply an expensive advertisement of Mr. Hille's system of purifying sewage. The first few pages are devoted to deprecating the process of purifying sewage by means of land, mainly because it does not pay, i.e. 'no profit,' and also because irrigation 'always has and always will constitute a dangerous nuisance.' As to the first objection, it must be remembered that sewage purification by land must vary in different localities, and it is now better understood than a few years ago. At first sanitary authorities were led to expect large profits from sewage farming, but now, by force of experience, they are contented if 5 per cent, can be paid on the original outlay on land exclusive of cost of sewers, etc. There ...
