Loners: the life path of unusual children

Wolff, Sula
`Loners is destined to be a clinical classic... I wish I had had Loners to read when I began my career... I commend this book to all those starting out on their mental health careers as an insightful portrait of an important condition and as a standard of clarity and brevity for their own research and writing. I commend it as well to mature clinicians whose understanding will be sharpened by studying its contents. This monograph demonstrates the importance of careful clinical longitudinal observation and incisive thought for the provision of appropriate psychiatric care for

From East End to Land's End: the evacuation of Jews' Free School, London, to Mousehole in Cornwall during World War Two

Soyinka, Susan
Told for the first time, this is a unique and heart-warming tale of World War Two Jewish evacuees sent to Mousehole, Cornwall from London's East End. In a time of conflict and atrocities, this story of mutual acceptance and integration is an inspiration to modern society. From East End to Land's End is the heart-warming and inspiring story of the World War Two evacuation of Jews' Free School (JFS) in the East End of London to Mousehole, a remote fishing village on the tip of Cornwall. In June 1940, around 100 JFS children and 5 of their teachers, together with thousands of other London evacuees, embarked on the lengthy and exhausting train journey from Paddington to Penzance. The JFS group was bussed to Mousehole, where the children were billeted with the villagers, and Jews' Free School, Mousehole, was established in the premises of Mousehole School. Arrangements were made for synagogue services to be held in the church hall of a nearby village, while many of the evacuees also attended chapel with their foster families, most of whom were strong Methodists. Remarkably, most of the evacuees quickly integrated into village life, and were accepted by the villagers as their own

Only Children

Rafael Yglesias
The critically acclaimed novel from a master of contemporary American fiction€”now available as an ebook A loving satire of new parenthood and its attendant joys and blunders The Golds and the Hummels live in the same wealthy Manhattan neighborhood, but as both couples prepare for the arrival of their first child, they share little in terms of parenting philosophy. The Golds plunge into natural birth without bothering to first set up a nursery. The Hummels schedule a C-section and fill out hospital admissions paperwork weeks in advance. Both couples, however, are grappling with the transformations they know parenthood will immediately bring. Set in a milieu of material excess and limitless ambition, Only Children skewers new parents who expect perfect lives, but also offers an intimate look at the trials all new parents face as they learn how to nurture.

And How Are the Children? Timeless Lessons from the Frontlines of Motherhood

Marjorie Margolies
Emmy-winning journalist, congresswoman, and the first single American to adopt internationally, Marjorie Margolies masterfully blends her personal narrative with national history and politics in this call-to-action memoir. Filled with the wisdom Marjorie Margolies gained as an athlete, educator, TV reporter, congressperson, world traveler, adoption advocate, parent, and grandparent, this memoir provides readers with an abundance of upbeat, prescriptive advice and inspiration with Marjorie's trademark self-effacing humor . Today, the world talks a lot about female empowerment, but when Marjorie was breaking through professional glass ceilings, she was unknowingly paving the way for the generations that followed in several different industries. After more than 25 years with NBC, she ran for U.S. Congress in 1991-as a registered Democrat in a historically Republican district of suburban Philadelphia-and she shocked the state and the country by winning by just over 1000 votes. She was the first woman elected in her own right in the state of Pennsylvania, but during her short tenure, Marjorie became the main target of Republicans taunts after she cast the deciding vote to approve President Clinton's budget. And How Are the Children? explores the life of a woman who was hardwired to shift paradigms and break down historic boundaries while managing a busy household and later dealing with heartbreaking tragedies including divorce and the death of a child. Her intention is for women of every generation to recognize themselves in her story and learn how to nurture themselves and the life decisions they have made.

Not aliens: Primary school children and citizenship/PHSE curriculum

Claire, Hilary
The English Citizenship curriculum has been drawn up with little regard for the views and experiences of primary school children. Hilary Claire's research with 8-11 year-olds in inner city schools reveals knowledge and a sophisticated discourse that is often at variance with the official agenda. It also demonstrates the level of debate that is possible with young children. "Not Aliens" is designed to help teachers get to grips with Citizenship education, and is of interest to anyone concerned with comparative education.

The children of Neverland: the silent human disaster

Koren, Gideon
Product Description Neverland, in the context of this book, is the place where many children will reside permanently, not being able to reach their full potential. Unlike Peter Pan's legendary, hidden land, there is neither legend nor hiding here. The damage inflicted on these children either during fetal life or soon after birth will remind them throughout their long journey that they have been locked out. From the Author I am a pediatrician and scientist in Toronto and the fate of these children is the focus of my research interest. But I hoped to write this book as a human manifesto and not as a scientific document. I believe that, when millions of children worldwide are afflicted by drugs, illness, or poverty every year, this stops being a scientific issue and turns into a global human disaster. And because almost everything described in this book is preventable, non of us should blame God or other extraterrestrial powers for this shame. Let's look in the mirror and ask what we can do better, and do it fast. From the Back Cover Dr. Gideon Koren is a Pediatrician and Scientist in Toronto; his career is dedicated to the well being of pregnant women, their unborn babies as well as infants and children. Dr. Koren is the author or co-author of 500 scientific articles. He is the author of over 30 children's books. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. From Chapter 7: The telephone rang at the McMartin home. It was Alice, the social worker Jim and Sally had hired to try to find them a child to adopt. Alice sounded excited. "It is a cute healthy boy of 8 months who has been doing very well with the foster family. The biological mother is a young girl. As far as I know she is healthy, although she lived life in the fast lane. No, as far as she says she did not use drugs, but she used to party quite a lot... But listen! The proof of the cake is the child himself! He is doing very well for his age. All the doctors say so too!" She was right. Joey was adorable. He was good looking, smiling, sociable, and he did all the things a baby of eight months is expected to do. The doctor told them that Joey did not have any signs of the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) ( his face appeared normal and so was his head circumference and his development. The baby was a real delight for the McMartins. He was a very energetic toddler and Jim and Sally had to chase after him everywhere to keep him out of trouble. Sally became first suspicious when the daycare workers thought he was a little bit hyperactive. Yet, over the next two years Joey had become more clearly hyperactive, aggressive, and difficult to control. Joey began to exhibit conduct problems in the kindergarten. When he was six he was put on Ritalin to control his hyperactivity and his condition was brought more or less under control, but his aggressiveness towards other children was not settled and it also became apparent that he had learning difficulties. Jim and Sally knew by then that discipline and a hard hand were useless, because Joey did not appear to perceive causation the way normal children do and he did not make the connection between his acts and the ensuing punishment. One weekend when Joey was ten he stole 2000 dollars from his father and spent the money with two friends within three days. Since the age of twelve, he was put in a closed institution, but whenever he is on vacation he gets in trouble with the police. The diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) was not yet in the medical books when Joey was adopted. Alcohol is used by more than 100 million people in North America and an estimated ten percent of them suffer from health effects or alcohol. With more than half of the pregnancies in North America being unplanned, millions of fetuses yearly are exposed to at least some alcohol before their mothers have become aware that they are pregnant. These facts by themselves must mean that the effects of alcoho
