Autobiographical Jews: essays in Jewish self-fashioning

Stanislawski, Michael
A collection of lectures delivered in May 2002 under the auspices of the Samuel and Althea Stroum Lectures in Jewish Studies at the University of Washington. Analyzes autobiographical works of seven Jews from antiquity to the 20th century. Two of these reflect despair in the midst and in the wake of World War II. Ch. 4 (pp. 103-138), "Autobiography as Farewell I: Stefan Zweig, " discusses the Austrian Jewish writer, who committed suicide in 1942, as a non-Zionist universalist even in the face of Nazism. Pp. 131-136 deal with the persecution of the Jews. Ch. 5 (pp. 139-174), "Autobiography as Farewell II: Sarah Kofman, " discusses the life and works of Kofman, who committed suicide in 1994. Focuses on her "Rue Ordoner, Rue Labat" and her Holocaust experiences as a child in Paris. Her father was killed in Auschwitz, and Kofman was looked after by a Christian woman to whom she felt closer than her mother. Deals with the conflicts in Kofman's sexual and religious identities.

J. R. R Tolkien A Life

Michael Coren
This is a book written for a young audience about the life and story of J.R.R. Tolkein, the man who wrote so much, so well, for so many of us. The story of his beginnings, his middle and his end. A story of an ordinary man who did extraordinary things. A story of mothers and fathers, sons and daughters. A story of God, religion, happiness, suffering, friendship and genius. Oh, and the story of the The Lord of the Rings, which in spite of what some people might say, is considered by many if not most of us to be one of the greatest books ever written.

Yom Kippur a go-go

Roth, Matthue
Yom Kippur A Go-Go is a mind-blowing meeting of pop culture, Orthodox faith, and hipster poetics. Matthue Roth is an American original: an Orthodox Jew who cites Outkast and Michelle Tea among his influences, who won’t touch a light switch on Shabbos but mimics a screaming orgasm onstage while reading his paean to Orthodox girls. From the World Bank riots (what can you do when the revolution starts on Shabbos?) to Thursday night tranny basketball in San Francisco’s Dolores Park, Matthue takes readers on a journey among the queer and hip streets of urban America in his exuberant memoir, Yom Kippur a Go-Go. With humor and insight, Roth describes the tension between contemporary life and the demands of faith. He falls in love and in lust with a panoply of girls, both strictly kosher and determinedly secular, to the accompaniment of MP3 rabbinical lectures on modesty ("Boys are nothing but perverts and filthy animals!”).

George Eliot

Mathilde Blind
Detailed accounts of George Eliot's life have hitherto been singularly scanty. In the dearth of published materials a considerable portion of the information contained in this biographical study has, necessarily, been derived from private sources. In visiting the places connected with George Eliot's early life, I enjoyed the privilege of meeting her brother, Mr. Isaac Evans, and was also fortunate in gleaning many a characteristic fact and trait from old people in the neighbourhood, contemporaries of her father, Mr. Robert Evans. For valuable help in forming an idea of the growth of George Eliot's mind, my warm thanks are especially due to her oldest friends, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bray, and Miss Hennell of Coventry. Miss Jenkins, the novelist's schoolfellow, and Mrs. John Cash, also generously afforded me every assistance in their power.

Bottom : on Shakespeare

Zukofsky, Louis
Written between 1947 and 1960 and first published in 1963, the prose work in the first of these two volumes reflects Louis Zukofsky's ongoing obsession with Shakespeare-whose plays he had first seen performed in Yiddish-and is central to understanding Zukofsky's work. Tracing the themes of knowledge, love and physical vision ("the eyes have it") through both Shakespeare's plays and the poetry, Bottom: On Shakespeare is more than a compendious act of homage by one poet to another. In effect, it lays out Zukofsky's poetics and theory of knowledge on a grand scale, tracing his themes through the whole of Western culture, from the Classical Greeks through William Carlos Williams. The second volume of Bottom: On Shakespeare consists of Celia Thaew Zukofsky's spare operatic setting of Shakespeare's Pericles, Prince of Tyre, a play in which Zukofsky saw Shakespeare rewriting the classic plots and tropes of the Odyssey. The Wesleyan edition features a new foreword by Bob Perelman.

Power

Feuchtwanger, Lion
"Power" is a masterful historical novel set in the eighteenth-century Duchy of WÃ1/4rttemberg. It tells the story of Josef SÃ1/4ß Oppenheimer, a brilliant and ambitious financier who rises to become the most influential advisor to the Duke. As SÃ1/4ß maneuvers through the treacherous landscape of courtly intrigue and political rivalry, he must navigate the precarious balance between his immense worldly power and his identity as a Jewish man in a hostile society. Lion Feuchtwanger's narrative explores themes of ambition, loyalty, and the corrupting nature of absolute authority. The novel provides a vivid portrait of an era defined by decadence and rigid social hierarchies while examining the internal conflict of a man caught between the pursuit of influence and the preservation of his heritage. With its rich historical detail and profound psychological insight, "Power" remains a compelling study of the moral costs of political success and the enduring struggle for dignity in the face of systemic prejudice.
