From East End to Land's End: the evacuation of Jews' Free School, London, to Mousehole in Cornwall during World War Two

Soyinka, Susan
Told for the first time, this is a unique and heart-warming tale of World War Two Jewish evacuees sent to Mousehole, Cornwall from London's East End. In a time of conflict and atrocities, this story of mutual acceptance and integration is an inspiration to modern society. From East End to Land's End is the heart-warming and inspiring story of the World War Two evacuation of Jews' Free School (JFS) in the East End of London to Mousehole, a remote fishing village on the tip of Cornwall. In June 1940, around 100 JFS children and 5 of their teachers, together with thousands of other London evacuees, embarked on the lengthy and exhausting train journey from Paddington to Penzance. The JFS group was bussed to Mousehole, where the children were billeted with the villagers, and Jews' Free School, Mousehole, was established in the premises of Mousehole School. Arrangements were made for synagogue services to be held in the church hall of a nearby village, while many of the evacuees also attended chapel with their foster families, most of whom were strong Methodists. Remarkably, most of the evacuees quickly integrated into village life, and were accepted by the villagers as their own

Dance of the fire: the Jewish Brigade in WW2 - facts, myths, appraisal

Shamir, Shlomo
A critical first-hand appraisal of the activities, achievements, and importance of the Jewish Brigade by IDF Major-General Shlomo Shamir (Rabinowicz), its Covert Internal Commander on behalf of the Haganah and the Jewish national institutions in Palestine. Some myths surrounding the Brigade's activities are also dealt with in this appraisal. The Jewish Brigade, a unit of the British Army during WW2, played a crucial role on behalf of world Jewry in the fight against Nazi Germany. Comprised mainly of Jewish volunteers from Palestine, the Brigade was formed in 1944 after four years of struggle for deployment as a fighting force. The Brigade participated in the Italian campaign, distinguishing itself in the battles along the Senio River and proving that Jewish soldiers could fight as a unified force against a well-trained enemy and prevail. Beyond combat and under Shamir's guidance, the Brigade was the first to search for, meet, and care for survivors of the Holocaust. Despite British disapproval, its members worked at numerous Displaced Persons camps in Germany, particularly at Bergen-Belsen, and facilitated the illegal journeys of many survivors to Palestine. The story of the Brigade therefore, exemplified a dedicated pursuit of both military goals and Jewish national aspirations. With many Brigade members subsequently becoming leading figures in the fledgling Israel Defence Forces (IDF), the book shines a light on how the experience of these Jewish volunteers in the British Army was irreplaceable in shaping both the military and political landscape of the nascent State of Israel.

Blowing the whistle on genocide: Josiah E. Dubois, Jr., and the struggle for a U.S. response to the Holocaust

Medoff, Rafael
"Blowing the Whistle on Genocide tells the story of a young Treasury Department lawyer who helped alert the world about the Holocaust and force U.S. government action to rescue Jews from the Nazis." "Risking his career and ignoring threats that were made against him, Josiah E. DuBois, Jr., relentlessly investigated and then exposed the State Department's suppression of news about the Holocaust and obstruction of rescue attempts." "His report, "The Acquiescence of This Government in the Murder of the Jews," helped force President Roosevelt to belatedly establish the War Refugee Board. With DuBois as one of its leaders, the board played a key role in the rescue of more than 200,000 refugees during the final months of the war." "At every turn, DuBois was confronted by officials who tried to stop him - from the powerful Assistant Secretary of State who sabotaged rescue attempts, to the War Department official who blocked DuBois's proposal to bomb Auschwitz and worked to pardon Nazi war criminals after the war." "But DuBois persevered. He overcame the obstacles and saved lives. He was America's Schindler."--BOOK JACKET.

France, Germany, and the Western Alliance

Gordon, Philip H.
Whether Europe will ever have anything resembling the “common foreign and security policy” described in the Maastricht Treaty will depend most of all on whether France and Germany are able to align their foreign policy goals and means. This thoughtful and original study examines the Franco-German security partnership in its post–Cold War context and analyzes the implications of that partnership for both Europe and the United States. Utilizing French and German sources and extensive interviews in Paris, Bonn, and Washington, Philip Gordon traces the evolution of Franco-German security cooperation since World War II, focusing especially on post-1989 developments. The book's historical and conceptual approach provides a framework for assessing the foundations of the Euro-optimism and -pessimism at odds with each other today.Gordon argues that Franco-German cooperation in the post–Cold War era will be more challenging than it was during a time when the Soviet threat united the two countries in a U.S.-led alliance. The book demonstrates how the end of the Cold War, German unification, a declining U.S. role in Europe, and emerging instabilities to Europe's east and south will test the strength of the Franco-German partnership, and it examines how French and German leaders have stood up to the new challenges so far. Detailed case studies of the Persian Gulf War, the debates over the “Eurocorps,” policies toward Eastern Europe, and the war in Yugoslavia make an invaluable contribution to our understanding of French, German, and Alliance policies in the post–Cold War world. Gordon also identifies new trends in French and German security policies since 1989 and analyzes their effects on the potential for Western and European cohesion. The book concludes that the general commitment in Paris and Berlin to continued cooperation is not in doubt but that a truly common and effective Franco-German or European security policy is unlikely; the national interests of the two countries and their Western partners not only remain different, but they are probably more divergent today than during the Cold War. Consequently, Gordon also argues that U.S. and European fears of Franco-German bilateralism are exaggerated and indeed that the allies have more to gain than to lose from Franco-German cooperation. The problem for the West is not so much that France and Germany have formed a cohesive political-military force within Europe but that they have failed to do so.

Marxism and totality: the adventures of a concept from Lukács to Habermas

Jay, Martin
Totality has been an abiding concern from the first generation of Western Marxists, most notably Lukács, Korsch, Gramsci, and Bloch, through the second, exemplified by the Frankfurt School, Lefebvre, Goldmann, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and Della Volpe, up to the most recent, typified by Althusser, Colletti, and Habermas. Yet no consensus has been reached concerning the term's multiple meanings—expressive, decentered, longitudinal, latitudinal, normative—or its implications for other theoretical and practical matters. By closely following the adventures of this troublesome but central concept, Marxism & Totality offers an unconventional account of the history of Western Marxism.

Languages of community: the Jewish experience in the Czech lands

Kieval, Hillel J.
Despite the growing assimilation of the Jews with Czech language and culture in the late 19th-early 20th centuries, many sectors of the Czech national movement regarded the Jews as a Germanizing element. Ch. 8 (pp. 181-197), "Death and the Nation: Ritual Murder as Political Discourse in the Czech Lands" [an earlier version appeared in "Jewish History" 10 (1996)], describes cases of blood libels in 1892-1902 and reflects on the role played by ritual murder discourse in the rhetoric of Czech nationalism. Concludes that the ritual murder accusation against the Jews, as well as belief in their sexual licentiousness, added psychological dimensions to the rhetoric of economic nationalism - e.g. accusations of economic exploitation and "linguistic treason." Ch. 9 (pp. 198-216), "Masaryk and Czech Jewry: The Ambiguities of Friendship, " disputes the myth of Masaryk as a staunch opponent of antisemitism. Throughout his career Masaryk could not overcome antisemitic prejudices adopted in his childhood; he paradoxically combined support for the Jews of Bohemia with expressions of resentment and distrust.

War or revolution: Russian Jews and conscription in Britain, 1917

Shukman, Harold
When Britain was compelled to introduce conscription in 1916, the question arose of what to do with its 'friendly aliens'-its 30,000 Russian-Jewish refugees of military age. The Tsar didn't want them back to serve in his army, and they had no desire to help his war effort. But when sections of the British press commented that as asylum seekers they should show gratitude and join up, a campaign with strong anti-Semitic overtones took off and became Parliamentary business. Then the Tsar was overthrown, and by the summer of 1917 the question was settled with the new regime: Russian Jews of military age had to choose either to join the British Army or to return to Russia to serve there. MI5 and Special Branch kept watch on the Communist Club in the West End, where Russian revolutionaries agitated tailors, cobblers and cabinet-makers who agonised over what to do. Many ended up in the British Army or were exempted for war work, but nearly 4,000 chose to go back to Russia-for a variety of reasons. Arriving there via the Arctic within weeks and days of the Bolshevik revolution, they found a vacuum of authority, which soon turned into the chaos and dangers of civil war. How they fared and how they struggled to return to their families in Britain is the story of War or Revolution. With the help of personal documents, official British and Russian archives, and interviews of survivors and their families, the author illuminates an unknown corner of the First World War and sets it against the background of the period.

The Dollar and the Vatican

Avro Manhattan
Avro Manhattan was a world renowned authority on Vatican geo-politics and wrote many great books. The Dollar and the Vatican is no exception--Avro was not just limited to writings on political topics however, he was also quite the painter, poet, and philosopher who contributed greatly to the advancement of the power of the rational mind. I found it criminal while being a student in University that Avro Manhattan's works are never brought up in political science courses--especially his 1949 classic The Vatican in World Politics which ran through over 15 editions and was published in over 10 languages. This book The Dollar and the Vatican was censored and killed off at the time of its release so we are very fortunate to be able to get it back in print. Like most books that the powers that be don't want the public to read--Avro Manhattan's books in print are very hard to find and are quite expensive--the current cheapest copy of the 1957 edition of The Dollar and the Vatican for sale before this edition was made is $650 and therefore highly un-accessible for the layman. From going to the online CIA reading room library and searching in Avro Manhattan in the search bar we see The Dollar and the Vatican being censored on emotional rather than rational grounds. The Independent in February 1966 reported: "New Republic publisher Gilbert Harrison was personally offended by the title " The Dollar and the Vatican " by Avro Manhattan in an ad. Without seeing the book, he insisted that the title be deleted. When this information was published, he was embarrassed to the point that he barred all future advertising." In Avro's 1967 book Catholic Power Today he writes about the suppression of this book by the national and Catholic press alike, and how many readers who ordered a copy of this book never received it. The information contained in this great book will put fear into the powers that be--if there is one thing that the elite do not want, it is process of the masses beginning to truly educate themselves. Even though The Dollar and the Vatican was written in 1957, it is still as relevant today as it was when it was first published. Like swarming locusts...the Vatican and the high-powered Dollar forces are looking to subjugate all of humanity to their dominion in their plans for enacting a technocratic New World Order. We as humans therefore need to be alert because if this dangerous partnership continues to flourish then the light of liberty and freedom will surely be put out forever. The future can be read by the past, and the The Dollar and the Vatican is an imperative study in the relationship of the most dangerous alliance on the Earth today--Big Business and the Vatican. ~ Eric Bowman, self-educated scholar (future author), Vatican geopolitical researcher, B.A. in economics, Youtube channel - Eric 777 Resurrect Books - Remastering and republishing forgotten and suppressed non-fiction public domain books All electronic versions of the books we publish will always be available for free. Lovely Green Eyes

Lustig, Arnost
“A moving act of absolution . . . . This strong novel about a girl who is debased but never destroyed pushes the reader to a new level of understanding of the things people do—and the things that are done to them.”— Washington Post Book World She has hair of ginger and lovely green eyes, and she has just been transported with her family from Terezín to Auschwitz. In short order, her father commits suicide, and her mother and younger brother are dispatched to the gas chambers, but fifteen-year-old Hanka Kauderzová is still alive. Faced with the choice of certain death in the camp or working in a German military brothel, she chooses a chance at life. Passing for an Aryan, Hanka spends her days in the brothel cold, hungry, fearful, and ashamed. She is sustained only by her loathing of the men who visit her and by a fierce, indomitable will to live. This devastatingly beautiful novel explores and delineates the impossible choices one sometimes has to make in life, when the fabric of the world is rent asunder. Soaring beyond the nightmare, it leaves the reader with a transcendent sense of hope. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more.
