A sampler of Chinese literature from the Ming dynasty to Mao Zedong

Sidney Shapiro
This remarkable collection excerpts and reproduces some of China's most significant and eclectic literary works created between the founding of the Ming Dynasty in 1368 through the era of China under Mao Zedong, which ended with his death in 1976. Expertly rendered into English by noted China expert Sidney Shapiro, these classic works are noted for their unique prose and subtle characterizations which at once dispel the notion of China as outside and mysterious. Instead, we are drawn into the strangeness of a distant land and different culture, where human qualities seem remarkably familiar. This journey through the world of Chinese literature is framed according to four distinct "Feudal Fiction" is represented by "Outlaws of the Marsh", the great picaresque classic novel. "War and Revolution" reflects the uprising of an outraged people against domestic oppression and foreign invasion. "Transition" graphically describes China's intellectual ferment and ethical conflicts in an era of revolution, while "Satiric Verse" gives a glimpse of the bitter, sardonic prose of the twentieth century. This work is an ideal introduction to China's finest fiction and its vivid illumination of Chinese history.

The Irony of the Ideal Paradoxes of Russian Literature

Mikhail Epstein
This book explores the major paradoxes of Russian literature as a manifestation of both tragic and ironic contradictions of human nature and national character. Russian literature, from Pushkin and Gogol to Chekhov, Nabokov and to postmodernist writers, is studied as a holistic text that plays on the reversal of such opposites as being and nothingness, reality and simulation, and rationality and absurdity. The glorification of Mother Russia exposes her character as a witch; a little man is transformed into a Christ figure; consistent rationality betrays its inherent madness, and extreme verbosity produces the effect of silence. The greatest Russian writers were masters of spiritual self-denial and artistic self-destruction, which explains many paradoxes and unpredictable twists of Russian history up to our time.

The Mythology of Imperialism: A Revolutionary Critique of British Literature and Society in the Modern Age

Jonah Raskin
"We, the readers and students of literature, have been hijacked. The literary critics, our teachers, those assassins of culture, have put us up against the wall and held us captive." So begins Jonah Raskin's The Mythology of Imperialism. When first published in 1971, this book was nothing short of a call to arms, an open revolt against the literary establishment. In his critique of five well-known British writers--Joseph Conrad, Rudyard Kipling, D. H. Lawrence, E. M. Forster, and Joyce Cary--Raskin not only developed the model for a revolutionary anti-imperialist criticism, but, through this book's influence on Edward Said, helped usher in the field of postcolonial studies. Nearly four decades later, The Mythology of Imperialism is all the more relevant. Its readings of British literature still offer bold and original insight into the relationship between text, artist, and historical context. But, perhaps more crucially, this book sends a revolutionary message to all readers and students of literature. Against much of today's postcolonialism--diluted by postmodern obfuscation and largely detached from its historical roots--Raskin locates the center of his anti-imperialist criticism in the anti-imperialist struggle itself and takes his cues not from "the assassins of culture" in the academy but from the national liberation movements of his time. Written with absorbing passion and machete-sharp analysis, this new edition of The Mythology of Imperialism includes the original text, a new introduction and afterword by the author, and a preface by Bruce Robbins.
