The Maltese dreambook

Levin, Gabriel
With Jerusalem as its epicentre, The Maltese Dreambook extends Gabriel Levin’s quarter-century-long ramble through the Levant, his adopted homeland. On a Greek island, in the desert wastes of southern Jordan and in Malta, whose Stone Age temples serve as a backdrop to the title poem, this collection abounds in unforeseen encounters that blur the borders between the phantasmal and the real, the modern and the archaic, the rational and the imaginary. Gabriel Levin was born in France, grew up in the United States, and has been living in Jerusalem since 1972. He has published two collections of poetry, Sleepers of Beulah (1992) and Ostraca (1999) and several translations from the Hebrew, French and Arabic, including a selection of Yehuda Halevi’s poetry, Poems from the Diwan (Anvil, 2002). He is one of the founding editors of Ibis Editions, a small press established in Jerusalem in 1997 and dedicated to the publication, in English, of literature from the Levant.

Elie Kedourie's approaches to history and political theory: 'the thoughts and actions of living men'

Sylvia Kedourie
Elie Kedourie was one of the twentieth century's most important and controversial historians of the Middle East. He redefined the landscape of the field by challenging the notion that the West's imperial domination of the region spawned nationalism in Arab countries. In a long career lecturing in politics at the London School of Economics, Kedourie inspired a generation of political scientists and politicians. A dedicated scholar and meticulous teacher, he founded Middle Eastern Studies, a journal which, forty years after its launch, remains one of the leading publications in the field and a monument to his work. Bringing together some of the most distinguished figures in Middle Eastern studies, this collection evaluates Kedourie's contribution to Middle Eastern history and political thought and assesses the impact of his scholarly legacy. The volume contains a complete bibliography of his writing and was previously published as a special issue of Middle Eastern Studies.

Elie Kedourie CBE, FBA, 1926-1992: history, philosophy, politics

Sylvia Kedourie
Elie Kedourie has been variously described as an angry young man, a sceptic, a conservative, an Oakeshottian, a pessimist, an imperialist, a Zionist, an anti-Zionist, an anti-Arab, and lately even starry-eyed about imperialism - all labels which attempt to categorize the scholar but reveal nothing about the man or his work. This little book is not a biography. It is a collection of essays evaluating his work and his legacy to scholarship. The various contributors, ranging widely in interest and occupation, have indicated their relationship with him in their essays. Of his own work, three pieces are included. One of his last essays, 'The Jews of Babylon and Baghdad', is published here for the first time.

The Jewish Idea and Its Enemies Personalities, Issues, Events

Edward Alexander
This volume deals with the modern fate of the traditional conception of Jews as a covenanted people chosen to receive the Law, whose ultimate purpose is contributing to the universal salvation of mankind. The author shows how, under the influence of liberalism, rationalism, relativism, and other Enlightenment ideologies, this idea was distorted, denied, inverted, yet never entirely obliterated. In his discussions of modern Jewish thinkers and writers and the ideological and political struggles of Zionism and the state of Israel against enemies from without and from within, Alexander shows that the ancient idea of covenant is still alive today, if only in the assumption that Jewish life can lead somewhere so long as Jews remember that it began somewhere. Ranging from literary criticism and the history of ideas to journalism and politics, the book is unified by a point of view unabashedly espousing the Jewish idea and challenging its enemies.
