Pseudo-Hecataeus on the Jews: legitimizing the Jewish diaspora

Bar-Kochva, Bezalel
Debate over the authenticity of "On the Jews" has persisted for nearly 1,900 years. Bezalel Bar-Kochva attempts to overcome this stalemate in his finely detailed and convincingly argued study that proves the forgery of the book and suggests not only a source for the text, but also a social, political, and cultural setting that explains its conception. Bar-Kochva argues that the author of this treatise belonged to the moderate conservative Jews of Alexandria, whose practices were contrary to the contemporary trends of Hellenistic Judaism. They rejected the application of Greek philosophy and allegorical interpretations of the Holy scriptures and advocated the use of Pentateuch Hebrew as the language for educating and for religious services. They showed a keen interest in Judea and identified themselves with the Jews of the Holy Land. "On the Jews," then, was the manifesto of this group and was written at the peak period of the Hasmonean kingdom. Its main purpose was to legitimize Jewish residence in Egypt, despite being explicitly prohibited in the Pentateuch, and to justify the continued residence of Jews there in a time of prosperity and expansion of the Jewish independent state.

70 ads to save the world: an illustrated memoir of social change

Mander, Jerry
""Why should advertising only serve the interests of those with money and power?" Since its inception, advertising has remained one of the most powerful commercial tools ever created. Advertising has deeply and thoroughly infiltrated the consumer psyche, shaping views on what to buy, find attractive, and deem valuable, for better or worse. 70 Ads to Save the World offers us a detailed, entertaining, and authoritative account regarding both the virtues and pitfalls of modern advertising through the personal journey of advertising specialist Jerry Mander. With the help of 70+ real-world ads, this illustrated memoir chronicles Mander's experiences in the world of commercial advertising, where he worked with some of the most talented and successful designers of his time and went on to establish two of the first non-profit ad agencies in the world. In 70 Ads, we learn how this service looked and felt in the latter half of the 20th century, and how it might look and feel in a future where we harness advertising to create a more just, regenerative, and creative society"--

Franz Baermann Steiner: a stranger in the world

Adler, Jeremy D.,Fardon, Richard
"Franz Baermann Steiner (1909-52) provided the vital link between the intellectual culture of central Europe and the Oxford Institute of Anthropology in its post-Second World War years. This book demonstrates his quiet influence within anthropology, which has extended from Mary Douglas to David Graeber, and how his remarkable poetry reflected profoundly on the slavery and murder of the Shoah, an event which he escaped from. Steiner's concerns including inter-disciplinarity, genre, refugees and exile, colonialism and violence, and the sources of European anthropology speak to contemporary concerns more directly now than at any time since his early death"--

Thy brother's blood: the Maccabees and dynastic morality in the Hellenistic world

Scolnic, Benjamin Edidin
Through exploring the particular importance of the fraternal relationship among the dynasties of the Hellenistic world in Thy Brother's Blood, Dr. Benjamin Scolnic demonstrates how adherence to or rejection of the "morality of kinship" literally changed the world. This in-depth book reviews fraternal relationships in the Bible and Greek and Roman mythology to create models for the falls of the Attalids of Pergamon and the Antigonids of Macedonia. The ancient writers from Rome to Jerusalem valued fraternal bonds and used fratricide as the symbol for internal dissension within nations. Using a focalized approach, Dr. Scolnic cautions that historians sometimes were so consumed with the metaphor of fraternity that they ignored the historical realities. He demonstrates this by providing a historical and moral context for the fall of one Judean dynasty, the Zadokite high priests, and for the rise and fall of the Hasmonaean dynasty, known to the world as the Maccabees.
