Psychoanalysis and the global

Ilan Kapoor
Psychoanalysis and the GlObal is about the hole at the heart of the “gl O bal,” meaning the instability and indecipherability that lies at the hub of globalization. The contributors use psychoanalysis to expose the unconscious desires, excesses, and antagonisms that accompany the world of economic flows, cultural circulation, and sociopolitical change. Unlike the mainstream discourse of globalization, which most often assumes unencumbered movement across borders, these contributors uncover what Lacan calls “the Real” of the gl O bal—its rifts, gaps, exceptions, and contradictions. Psychoanalysis and the Gl O bal adopts a psychoanalytic lens to highlight the unconscious circuits of enjoyment, racism, and anxiety that trouble, if not undermine, globalization’s economic, cultural, and environmental goals or gains. The contributors interrogate how unconscious desires and drives are externalized in our increasingly globalizing world: the ways in which traumas and emotional conflicts are integral to the disjunctures, homogeneities, and contingencies of global interactions; how social passions are manifested and materialized in political economy as much as in climate change, urban architecture, refugee and gender politics, or the growth of neo-populism; and how the unconscious serves as a basis for the rise and breakdown of popular movements against authoritarianism and neoliberal globalization. Psychoanalysis and the GlO bal represents a major step forward in understanding globalization and also in extending the range and power of psychoanalytic critiques in, and of, geography.

The Sterling-Dollar-Franc Tangle

Einzig, Paul
First published in 1933, the original purpose of this book was to draw attention to the international aspects of monetary policy and to put forward the case for international co-operation in the monetary sphere. Paul Einzig highlights the negative impact that a lack of international spirit in monetary policy can have and promotes an increased understanding amongst nations. He discusses the failure of the Monetary and Economic Conference of June-July 1933 and expresses his belief that the monetary crisis of the time would be solved, if not through an agreement, then through the inevitable inflationary effect of the increasing economic difficulties.

The Jews in medieval Assisi, 1305-1487: a social and economic history of a small Jewish community in Italy

Toaff, Ariel
A study of Jewish-Christian relations in Assisi in the late medieval period. Inter alia, discusses anti-Jewish sermons by Franciscan friars in the 15th century, particularly by Fortunato Coppoli da Perugia. At his instigation, the Monte di Pieta was instituted in Assisi in 1468 in order to facilitate the passage of banking and finance from Jewish to Christian hands; other anti-Jewish measures were adopted as well. The Jews requested the intervention of Pope Paul II, who stated that all contracts with Jews were valid, but the Jews continued to be hounded by Franciscan preachers. In 1485 the Monte di Pieta and other measures were reinstituted, and shortly afterwards most of the Jews left the city. Pp. 101-213 contain documents, some of which refer to anti-Jewish measures.

The correspondence of Richard Price

Price, Richard
These three volumes are the result of many years of work by the editors who have gone to considerable lengths to establish the definitive collection of Price's letters. They contain all the known extant copies of the correspondence of Richard Price, printed, wherever the originals are available, from manuscript (including Price's shorthand mss.). Many items are published for the first time (including items from the valuable collection in the possession of the Marquis of Lansdowne). Perhaps best known as a political philosopher, Price made significant contributions to Anglo- American intellectual life in the late 18th century in a variety of fields. This remarkable collection of letters, most previously unpublished, is impressive for the breadth of topics covered—religion, theology, politics, education, liberty, finance, demography, and insurance.

Walter Gordon A Political Memoir

Walter Gordon
Walter Gordon was a born member of the Canadian Establishment, a senior partner in one of the country's major accounting firms, successful and powerful in the world of business. After considerable persuasion by his close friend Prime Minister Lester Pearson, Gordon left business for politics and became finance minister in the Liberal government in 1963. But Gordon was different from many of his associates--he had an abiding concern for Canada, and for ensuring the independence of its enconomy. He worked to enshrine this perspective in the Liberal Party, the Pearson government and in Canadian politics generally. Walter Gordon: A Political Memoir tells the story of a politician who put principles above personal ambition, who suffered disappointments and defeats, but who always stood out as a man who remained true to his beliefs.
