Chemistry & art: further adventures of a chemist collector

Bader, Alfred
Alfred Bader's achievements—as the founder of one of the most important companies in its field in the world, as a collector and dealer in Old Master paintings, and as a legendary philanthropist—make for fascinating reading. This book begins where Alfred Bader's first autobiography, Adventures of a Chemist Collector, ended: with the boardroom coup in which he was dismissed from the chemical company he had built up from the ground. Bader now turns his enormous energy to Old Master paintings, in which he had become interested at a young age and in which he by now has the means to invest. The chapters that follow are roughly chronological, with some devoted to particularly meaningful paintings or groups of paintings, memorable auctions, mysteries, or discoveries relating to the artworks in the Bader Collection, while others are dedicated to friends, family, love, religion, charity, and, occasionally, chemistry.

Ernest Clifford Peixotto American Artist: A Biography

Ernest D. Peixotto
At the dawn of the 20th century the artistic talent of Ernest C. Peixotto was confirmed by honors won for his paintings at the Paris salons. Having achieved acclaim as an illustrator by the age of twenty-four, he illustrated books for Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge and Edith Wharton, among many other notables. Ernest and his wife Mary, an artist in her own right, traveled extensively throughout Europe and North and South America. Their experiences served as the inspiration for his numerous illustrated articles and books. By the age of thirty-four, enabled by his God-given talent and work ethic, Ernest had established residences in Fontainebleau, outside Paris, and New York City's upper East Side. The couple lived a life of enviable artistic fulfillment on both continents and were among society's international elite. Later in his life, he became a renowned mural painter, and as a member of the Board of Design for the 1939 New York World's Fair, he supervised the art decoration for the Fair.

Warp Spasm

Basil King
Literary Nonfiction. "This is an extremely individual book, a book where the writer puts us through an experience whereby we can see paintings differently, read a story differently, seemingly from the writer's/painter's point of view.... This is not a book to borrow, it must always be available for re-reading. As time passes my perception alters and so I must refer to Warp Spasm to help me put a few words to my perceptions, or better still, to help me watch the images change in my mind's eye. Now that is a joy"--Hubert Selby, Jr.
