Radioactive Tracers in Biology: Second Edition, An Introduction to Tracer Methodology
Ultra-Wideband, Short-Pulse Electromagnetics
In 1945, Dr. Ernst Weber founded, and was the first Director of, the Microwave Research Institute (MRI) at POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY (at that time named the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn). MRI gained world-wide recognition in the 50's and 60's for its research in electromagnetic theory, antennas and radiation, network theory and microwave networks, microwave components and devices. It was also known through its series of topical symposia and the widely distributed hard bound MRI Symposium Proceedings. Rededicated as the Weber Research Institute (WRI) in 1986, the research focus today is on such areas as electromagnetic propagation and antennas, ultra broadband electromagnetics, pulse power, acoustics, gaseous electronics, plasma physics, solid state materials, quantum electronics, electromagnetic launchers, and networks. Following the MRI tradition, WRI has launched its own series of in-depth topical conferences with published proceedings. The first conference was held in October, 1990 and was entitled Directions in Electromagnetic Wave Modeling. The proceedings of the conference were published under that title by Plenum Press. This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the second WRI International Conference dealing with Ultra·Wideband Short·Pulse Electromagnetics.
Synthesis of Heterocycles via Cycloadditions II
Heterocyclicmoleculesplayasigni'cantroleinlifeprocessesandhaveplayed a major rolein industrial developments of the last century, for instance in the ?eld of dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, polymers etc. They comprise not onlysomeofthemostinterestingandbiologicallyimportantnaturalproducts like alkaloids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and antibiotics but include many practical drugs and a large segment of known synthetic organic compounds. Hencescientistshavedevotedagreatamountofeffortto'ndoptimalsynthetic approachesto a variety ofheterocyclic compounds. Amongthemostsuccessfulandselectivesyntheticprocessesarecycload- tionreactions, since theyinvolvesimultaneous orsequential formationoftwo or more bonds often with a high degree of stereoselectivity and regiosel- tivity.Forinstance, 1,3 dipolar cycloadditions, whichare electronicallyequ- alent to Diels-Alder reactions, are among the most-common 5-membered ring-forming systems. In addition they usually proceed with a high degree of stereo-andregio-control.Itistherefore, notsurprising thatsynthesisofmany important classes ofheterocycles, including thoseof useful biologicallyactive molecules, have utilized cycloadditionsteps intheirformation.Furthermore, many heterocycles serve as intermediates in the synthesis of polyfunctional molecules. Volume I of "Synthesis of Heterocycles via Cycloadditions" featured ?ve chapters onthe followingtopics: - Isoxazolines fromNitroCompounds: Synthesis and Applications; - Cycloaddition Reactions of Azides Including Bioconjugation; - Enantioselective Cycloadditions ofAzomethine Ylides; - Heterocyclesby Cycloadditions of CarbonylYlides Generated fromDiazo Ketones; - HeterocyclesfromUnsaturated Phosphorus Ylides. In this volume we present four selected contributions by well-known authors, each an authority in his ?eld. The ?rst chapter is devoted to the use of oximes in cycloadditions which leads to formationof isoxazolines and isoxazolidines and from there to synthesis of macrolides like amphotericin and of other natural products and bioactive molecules. Furthermore, 4+2 cycloadditions of nitrosoalkenes are also included. This chapter complements the one in the X Preface previous volume which discussed access to isoxazolines via nitroalkanes.
The Scattering of Light and Other Electromagnetic Radiation: Physical Chemistry: A Series of Monographs
The Scattering of Light and Other Electromagnetic Radiation discusses the theory of electromagnetic scattering and describes some practical applications. The book reviews electromagnetic waves, optics, the interrelationships of main physical quantities and the physical concepts of optics, including Maxwell's equations, polarization, geometrical optics, interference, and diffraction. The text explains the Rayleigh2 theory of scattering by small dielectric spheres, the Bessel functions, and the Legendre functions. The author also explains how the scattering functions for a homogenous sphere change depending on different physical parameters such as the optical size, the complex refractive index, and the angle of observation. The author addresses the assignment of a complex dielectric constant and a corresponding refractive index to plasma when an alternating electrical field is applied that will make the plasma exhibit conductivity and polarization. In a liquid, the author points out that the intensity of scattering is one or two orders of magnitude less than that found in a gaseous system; he explains that the molecules are no longer acting as incoherent nor as randomly located scatterers. This book can be useful for physicists, chemists, biochemists, and engineers whose work includes research utilizing light scattering in the study of certain gases, pure liquids, molecular solutions, macromolecules, polymers, and glass.

Spot Tests in Inorganic Analysis
Many years have passed since the last edition of the present book was published. The discovery during this period of many new reagents has resulted in a vast accumulation of data on their application and made this completely revised edition necessary. Numerous new tests and various new chapters have been added. Chapters 3,4 and 5 of the fifth edition have been combined into one chapter, which is divided into sections devoted to the elements. These sections are arranged in alphabetical order to make for easier location of information on a given element. To further improve the usefulness of the volume, a reference list has been provided for each sub-section followed by a biography of the appropriate quantitative methods.
Laboratory Manual to Accompany Clarke and Dennis's Elementary Chemistry (Classic Reprint)
Excerpt from Laboratory Manual to Accompany Clarke and Dennis's Elementary Chemistry The chief benefits to be derived by the beginne1 in chemistry from a course in laboratory work are training in careful Observation and accurate description and state ment Of experimental results, and practice in the neat and proper handling Of apparatus. To aid and stimulate the development Of the pupil's powers Of Observation, ques tions have been introduced under each experiment. The record of the student should not, however, be confined to the answering Of those questions, but should comprise a full description of everything that he has Observed. The Chemistry of Catalytic Hydrocarbon Conversions
The Chemistry of Catalytic Hydrocarbon Conversions covers the various chemical aspects of catalytic conversions of hydrocarbons. This book is composed of eight chapters that include catalytic synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methanol. The opening chapters examine various acid- and base-catalyzed reactions, such as isomerization, polymerization, oligomerization, alkylation, catalytic cracking, reforming, hydrocracking, and hydrogenation. The subsequent chapters are devoted to specific catalytic reactions, including heterogeneous hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, aromatization, and oxidation. Other chapters describe the homogeneous catalysis by transition metal organometallic catalysts and the metathesis of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The concluding chapter deals with the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbon fuels from carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methanol, and dimethyl ether. This book is of great benefit to petroleum chemists, engineers, and researchers.
The Tragedy of the Pound
First published in 1932, this book discusses the suspension of the gold standard in Britain, and the economic events surrounding September 1931. It argues that despite specific errors made by individuals, groups, and individual nations, the attempts to save the pound had little chance of recovery. Indeed, years before its collapse, powerful, fundamental factors had been eroding its stability. Hence, the author does not entirely blame the influence of French policy, or Great Britain's political and economic decline after the war, but states that the collapse of sterling was co-ordinated by several factors of importance.
