Conquering Learning Disabilities at Any Age How an ADHD/LD Kid Graduated from Yale and Cambridge, and Became a Marine Officer, Military Historian, Financial Advisor and Caring Father

Bryan Mark Rigg
In Conquering Learning Disabilities at Any Age, Dr. Bryan Mark Rigg accomplishes several goals. First, he explains what Learning Disabilities (LD) in general are, and what Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia are in particular. As a trained and established historian, Dr. Rigg gives historical explanations and background of where these conditions come from and why we have them. After defining and exploring LD, ADHD and dyslexia, Dr. Rigg chronicles his life of ADHD and dyslexia and how he struggled with it and has used it, ultimately, to his benefit. In doing this, he has consulted countless experts and interviewed former teachers to bring to light the techniques that helped him succeed as a student, as a professional and as a parent. And in using his life as an example, he tries to accomplish three goals for three communities. The first goal is to inspire teachers who teach children with LD issues. He provides countless tactics one might bring to the classroom to help and inspire children with LD, especially ADHD and dyslexia. His second goal is to encourage and help parents of children with LD issues. He explores what his mother, Marilee Rigg, did for him in order to help give other parents examples of what enabled him to overcome his learning disabilities not only in the classroom, but also out in society and at home. Lastly, his third goal with writing this book is to inspire his ADHD/dyslexic/LD "cousins" to work on their condition and turn it into their friend and not into their crutch. Using his biographical narrative, Dr. Rigg gives countless examples of how one might better understand LD issues, which really have only been studied for the past five or six decades. In conclusion, Dr. Rigg uses humor, scholarship, story-telling and history in order to shed new light on an issue that affects millions of people throughout the world and how one might best deal with the LD in their lives and/or in the lives of their loved ones.

Exit wounds: a story of love, loss and occasional wars

Godwin, Peter
"Peter Godwin's mother is dying. Born in England, and having spent most of her adult life as a doctor in Zimbabwe, she now lies on a hospital bed in the partitioned living room of his sister's London home. Peter has spent his life missing his Zimbabwean childhood, a longing that does not diminish as he reflects on his time as a journalist on the frontlines of combat around the world, or life in New York with his English wife and transatlantic children. In his mother's final months, he must come to terms with everything his family was and wasn't: the secrets they kept from one another, the stoicism that sometimes threatened to destroy them, and the beauty of the wildly different places they called home. With generations of history behind him, Godwin lyrically brings us into the spaces which make us question and suffer, shows us how we can heal our own scars, and celebrate the lives we have among family and friends" -- Publisher's description.

Ode to Chores The Good, The Bad, and The Laundry

Brenda Kahn
Whether you're a savvy mom of teens or a new mom trying to get baby to sleep, this book is for you. A must read for every mom who ever said: "Stop rocking on the chair!" Not your average poetry book, Ode to Chores is a clever and entertaining view of parenting, motherhood, children, pets, and the life and times of moms on call 24/7. ------------------ The Inspiration For This Book The whole thing started because I was lonely. I spent hours every day with my little kids, which I really loved for a while, but my husband was gone A LOT, and when he came home, he was all talked out. He just wanted to spend a little time with his two boys roughhousing and eating Oreo Thins. Plans with friends were few and far between because we were all busy shuffling kids to school and activities when we weren't working jobs, or doing house projects, or stumping for our chosen elected officials, or reconnecting with our significant others. In the meantime, exhausted at the end of every day, I still wanted to be an artist, a writer, and a musician. I'd been on stage for 25 years and suddenly the only singing I was doing was lullabies at 3 AM in a rocking chair trying to get my little muffin to sleep. . . just for a little while. . . sleep muffin, sleep. Somewhere along the way, I put down my pen and found myself deep in the stuff of kids. Then, one evening after an especially frustrating dinner with the boys, I sent everyone off to their rooms, flipped over an envelope lying in the mess on the dining room table, and wrote the poem Stop Rocking on the Chair. I was surprised at how satisfying it was to say it on the page. From there I started writing these "mom poems" all the time. As I did, I felt less and less alone. I was not only writing about my experience but a thread of experience that connected to moms all over the world and through time. The common language of motherhood reconnected me to my creativity and other people at the same time. I first thought I wrote this book for myself, but it turns out I wrote this book for you. I hope it brings you joy and even makes you cry. I hope it brings mothers together and inspires you to make some art and put it out into the world, so we can all have a moment of connection together. Call me. We'll have coffee. ------------------ About the Author Brenda Kahn is a poet, memoirist and an international recording artist who has shared the stage with Bob Dylan, David Byrne, and Jeff Buckley. Invisible Lines of Connection Sacred Stories of the Ordinary

Lawrence Kushner
"Suppose there is something going on in the universe which is to ordinary, everyday reality as our unconcious is to our daily lives? Softly, but unmistakably guiding it. Most of the time, we are unaware of it. Yet, every now and then, on account of some 'fluke, ' we are startled by the results of its presence. We realize we have been part of something with neither consciousness nor consent. It is so sweet--and then it is gone. You say, 'But I don't believe in God.' And I ask, 'What makes you think it matters to God?"' --from Lawrence Kushner, whose previous books have opened up new spiritual possibilities, now tells us stories in a new literary form. Through his everyday encounters with family, friends, colleagues and strangers, Kushner takes us deeply into our lives, finding flashes of spiritual insight in the process. Such otherwise ordinary moments as fighting with his children, shopping for bargain basement clothes, or just watching a movie are revealed to be touchstones for the sacred. This is a book where literature meets spirituality, where the sacred meets the ordinary, and, above all, where people of all faiths, all backgrounds can meet one another and themselves. Kushner ties together the stories of our lives into a roadmap showing how everything "ordinary" is supercharged with meaning--if we can just see it.

The Price

R. S. Brown
Four young children and their protective father try to endure and survive the mother's post-partum depression and anger until one fateful night. Everything changes when the mother is arrested for domestic violence after attacking the father in their home. Afterwards, the father says to their kids, "All I want for you is a happy mom," but he doesn't know that a happy mother will come at a cost - his fatherhood. This is the true story of how the mother turned the tables - getting their children to stop running from her to the father, and instead, running from the father to her, as she and her equally vengeful mother, through intricate lies - aka distortion campaigns - enlist everyone they can find, from friends, to counselors, to the community, to judges, to align with their cause.
