Triumphs of Poverty: (Bilingual Edition)

Nieto, David,Hilliger, Walter
Product Description (EN) Three centuries ago, David Nieto entrusted to the Sephardic community in London some of the secrets behind the Merkabah, a divine Chariot seen by the Hebrew Biblical prophets. In the oldest synagogue of the United Kingdom, Bevis Marks, Nieto addressed the congregation in Judeo-Spanish and revealed in a poetic sermon the meaning behind Ezekiel’s vision of the chariot and its mystical ascent into heaven. His glorification of poverty, according to Kabbalah, sparked great controversy with the materialistic mainstream thought of 18th-century England. Triumphs of Poverty was buried in time and the publication was never translated into English. This first unabridged bilingual edition has been expanded to include various sources omitted in the original transcript.David Nieto (Venice, 1654 – London, 1728) was the Haham of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish Community in London. He was one of the most accomplished Jews of his time and was equally distinguished as philosopher, physician, poet, mathematician, astronomer, and theologian.Nieto published in 1704, "A Tractate about the Divine Providence, i.e. Universal Nature or Natura Naturante" (translated by the author); "The Triumph of Poverty" in 1709; "Matteh Dan" in 1714; "Esh Daat" (The Fire of Knowledge), in 1715; "Recondite Notice of the Inquisition of Spain and Portugal" 1728. He died in London and is buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Mile End Road. Romanian poems

Celan, Paul
A Bilingual Edition Romanian poet Paul Celan (1920–1970) is celebrated for his late works in German: Breathturn (1967), Threadsuns (1968), and Lightduress (1970, all published by Green Integer). Less known are his writings in Romanian, written before his arrival in Vienna in 1947. The famously melancholic poet characterizes these early years as being touched with euphoria. "Paul Celan… has become the raw material of so much critical processing, it has become difficult to read him without hearing the voices of the commentators. The continual buzzing of the interpretive chorus around Celan’s poetry has nearly added another layer of pain to work that is already written at the synapses of raw nerves. I say 'nearly,' because happily there is Julian Semilian and Sanda Agalidi, who translate the poetry as if there are only two entities in the room: Psyche and Echo. Celan would have been proud to be thus refreshed." — Poet/critic Andrei Codrescu on Romanian Poems

The General and Other Poems First World War Poetry by Siegfried Sassoon

Siegfried Sassoon
This new edition of poems draws from poems published during and shortly after the First World War by Siegfried Sassoon. Also included are several early poems showing his early naïve ignorance of the terrible reality of war, prior to the death of his brother in 1915 and his experiences at the front, and later Sassoon's A Soldier's Declaration, which marks his break with the military authorities. Such was the uproar caused by his statement, which was read aloud in parliament and published in The Times in 1917, that he was afterwards diagnosed with shell shock and incarcerated in a hospital, where he continued to write and met Wilfred Owen. Poems included in this edition are:AbsolutionA Letter HomeThe HeroThe Poet as HeroThe GeneralAttackCounter-AttackThe Rear-GuardWirersThe Humbled HeartPrelude: The TroopsDreamersHow to dieThe EffectA Soldier's DeclarationThe FathersLamentationsSuicide in the trenchesDoes it matter?Fight to a finishEditorial ImpressionGlory of womenTheir frailtyThe Hawthorn TreeThe InvestitureTrench DutyBreak of dayTo any dead officerSick leaveBanishmentSong-books of the warThrushesAutumnInvocationRepression of war experienceThe TriumphJoy BellsRemorseDead MusiciansThe DreamIn BarracksConscriptsTogetherSurvivorsEveryone SangThe book also includes a new introduction by Kenneth Grant introducing the reader to Sassoon's world and tracing the progress of his poetry from naive patriotism on the eve of war to something darker.
