Sunrise Delayed - a Personal History of Solar Energy

Frank Kreith Profes
At the age of 91, the author has written his life story, starting with his escape on a children's transport from Vienna following Kristallnacht. Interweaving his colorful personal and professional life, he tells about his work in solar and renewable energy in the United States, as well as in developing countries, culminating in his election as Pioneer for the World Renewable Energy Conference, an affiliate of the United Nations. He started his life in the U.S. working the night shift in a machine shop while attending college in the daytime and finally graduating from the University of California at Berkeley in 1945. The story follows the author's enthusiasm for nuclear energy under the guidance of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, to building a heat transfer laboratory at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and his effort to apply his knowledge of heat transfer to design nuclear power plants. He then discusses his gradual acceptance that sustainable energy is socially and technically superior to nuclear power to achieve a sustainable energy future. He also recognized that engineering is only a part of the larger picture which involves the interaction between population, environment, economics, and technology. The glue that binds these factors is an adequate supply of cheap energy which has heretofore come from fossil sources, but must now be replaced by renewable energy technologies. He described his career as Chief of Thermal Research and then Senior Research Fellow at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) and the recognition he received from various professional societies. Kreith shows the path he laid out to work towards a sustainable energy future and the action by state and federal governments to attain this goal. The professional community of engineering recognized his contributions by establishing the ASME Frank Kreith Energy Award. The book ends with a realistic description of a socially and technically viable transition from our fossil era to a renewable and sustainable energy system.

Directing operations

Kitson, Frank
Throughout the world, countries are obliged to make great sacrifices in order to raise the vast sums of money needed to secure their defence. But both the sacrifice and the money will be wasted unless properly prepared and qualified commanders are available to direct military operations in the event of war breaking out. Many books have been written which attempt to deduce the qualities required of contemporary generals by studying the performance of the great captains of history. By contrast, in Directing Operations, first published in 1989, Kitson works out the qualities needed by studying the tasks that would be likely to confront commanders of the day. He goes on to discuss how traditional methods of producing senior officers, which may have been suited to the needs of the massed armies of the first half of the twentieth century, should be adapted to fit the demands of the modern world.Kitson's writings continue to be widely read and provoke strong opinions, and the ideas contained in Directing Operations remain highly relevant to the armies of all developed countries.

Positions and presuppositions in science fiction

Suvin, Darko R.
In this major survey of theoretical aspects and contemporary authors of science fiction, one of its foremost investigators argues for a radically new approach. For Darko Suvin, science fiction writings are neither prophecy nor the folklore of technology, but at their best parables for our times. Suvin lays the foundations for understanding their narrative logic and ideological horizons, and then examines a crucial group of modern authors. These comprise the diverging stances of Asimov, Le Guin, and Dick in the USA, Yefremov and the Strugatskys in the USSR, and Lem and the Brauns in Central Europe. The book culminates in a discussion of science fiction as metaphor, applied to a text by Cordwainer Smith as the bad conscience of Reaganism.

The Times History of the War in South Africa, Vol. 1 1899-1900

L. S. Amery
Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, Vol. 1: 1899-1900 In the present volume I have endeavoured to set before the reader a full account of the relations between the Imperial Government and the Dutch Republics in South Africa, of the causes that led up to the final crisis, and of the protracted negotiations which preceded the outbreak of the great South African War. No study of the military operations themselves can be complete without at least some slight knowledge of the political situation of which the war was the outcome. The ultimatum, the invasion of Natal, the rebellion in Cape Colony, the part played in the war by the Uitlander corps, the stubbornness of the resistance offered by the Boers, the annexation of them territories, arc all matters which can only be understood in the light of previous events. This, and the fact that no adequate connected account of all the circumstances leading up to the war, has as yet appeared, will, I venture to think, be sufficient justification for prefixing this introductory volume to the series of volumes which arc to narrate the course of the military operations. The subject has been treated, as far as possible, from the historical point of view, though at so short an interval of time from the events themselves it is impossible altogether, on some occasions, to avoid a controversial tone. Crypto-Jews in the Canaries A Paper Read Before the Jewish Historical Society of England

Lucien Wolf
Excerpt from Crypto-Jews in the Canaries: A Paper Read Before the Jewish Historical Society of England Some twenty years ago, while investigating the circumstances of the re-settlement of the Jews in this country under the Protectorate, I was struck by the curious fact that that chief figure in that movement, Antonio Fernandez Carvajal, and several of his fellow adventurers, hailed from a little archipelago in the East Atlantic, which had never before figured in Jewish history, and which, so far as I know, has not even yet found a place in that record. Carvajal had considerable property in the Canaries, and seems to have spent his early life at Santa Cruz. Duarte Henriques Alvares had been Royal Treasurer in the islands, and his nephew, Antonio Rodrigues Robles, whose sensational denunciation as a Spaniard on the outbreak of the Spanish war in 1656 first revealed the existence of the London Marrano community, and successfully established its rights of residence, had been his Deputy-Treasurer. There was also reason to believe that Carvajal's brother-in-law, Simon de Souza, and other relatives and co-religionists of his who had joined him in England, notably Domingo de la Cerda and Antonio de Porto, were Canariote immigrants. With a view to throwing further light on the personal histories of these men, and on the circumstances which determined their eventful migration, I planned a visit to Teneriffe in the autumn of 1894. By a fortunate accident I confided my project to the late Marquis of Bate, and was thus spared a bootless journey. Some years earlier Lord Bute had acquired the larger part of the original records of the Canariote Inquisition, of which a general calendar, dealing chiefly with Protestant and sorcery cases, has since been printed under the editorship of Dr. de Gray Birch. These valuable documents he was good enough to place at my disposal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Are the Germans the Chosen People? Address Delivered at the Business Men's Club, Cincinnati, January 28th, 1918 (Classic Reprint)

David Philipson
Excerpt from Are the Germans the Chosen People?: Address Delivered at the Business Men's Club, Cincinnati, January 28th, 1918 The statement has been made frequently of late years that the modern Germans in their claim that they are God's chosen people are the latter day counterpart of the ancient Jews, who are thus termed in the Bible. Preachers and writers in Germany make the direct comparison in unmistakable terms as when one of these preachers declares unreservedly: As was Israel among the heathen, so is Germany amongst the nations, the pious heart of Europe, and another asserts no less apodictically: In a moment we, the children of modern humanity, have become the heir of Israel, the people of the Old Testament. We shall be the bearers of God's promises, the living proof that it is not man who creates history, but God through man. The conviction that they are the chosen people -of these latter ages has become a leading article of German belief; it has imbued the German peo ple with a feeling of superiority over all other nations; they have become obsessed with the idea that they are God's favorites; they speak of God as the. German God, implying thereby that other peoples are without the pale of His special concern. It is, however, not only Germans who have instituted the comparison between themselves and ancient Israel in this matter of being God's chosen people, but leading speakers and thinkers in other lands, when discussing the state of the modern German mind, are fond of adducing the same comparison. It was only recently that I heard a distinguished American professor say this emphatically and without modification. As I listened to his words the thought presented itself forcibly to my mind that this frequently reiterated statement could and should be subjected to careful examination. For I felt that this comparison was super ficial and far from the truth inasmuch as the term chosen peo ple received an entirely different interpretation by the leading spirits of ancient Israel, namely the prophets, from that given it by the spokesmen of modern Germany as revealed in the writings and utterances of the foremost framers of opinion in that realm in recent days.
