Sondheim, Alan
"One might think of Alan Sondheim as the Joyce of our time. Too big while he?s here among us, or while we?re here among him, to get our heads around what he?s done and is doingEOn the other hand, it?s clear he doesn?t want to be our Joyce at all, in deliberate, un-scrolling process as he is of immolating himself, incinerating any last trace of canonical identity in a stupendous bonfire of poetry, code, and secret philosophy. What OJoyceO shall be left? What OSondheimO? A monk burns in full view and the blaze refuses to go out. We?re here watching, startled and baffled, contemptuous and titillated. That we don?t quite know what fuels the seemingly mystical act renders the transfiguration all the more unsettling and marvelous. -- Kent JohnsonSondheim's writing refreshes. Narrative or persistent personality the reader constructs will resist. It's funny output, coded, destabilizing. It projects, expands and redirects personal need, hunger amidst insubstantial plenty, where the real material is imaginary.Writing without purpose; purposeful writing; not delivery of contentment or white space infill. Writing as individuation of multipliers where what is familiar is parodic as it is manifested, cyborgian tenacity creating its selves in process awareness, sans merci.I is mindful of being confederated awareness. Peripheral desiring bodies remain animal, alone and palely loitering during downtime, mammals with machines, sensuous making intellects. -- Lawrence UptonAlan Sondheim is a force of nature: a Category 5 mindstorm blowing in from all points of the compass at once. Coded and plain-speaking, philosophical and emotional, artistic and banal: to read Sondheim is to fall through a wormhole into a full world. And why shouldn't a work of art be a world? His art is writing as a performance act even more direct than Allen Ginsberg speaking into his tape recorder. A storming virtuosity of ideas. Be shelled. (ksh to be specific.) Complex and simple, digital and just plain talking, Jeremiah and the static. At this time of continuing doom, the storm we need to blow us clean. -- Jim Rosenberg"

Worlds apart: the re-migration of South African Jews

Tatz, Colin Martin
If the 19th and 20th centuries witnessed the greatest migrations in the history of the world, then the story of the exodus of Jews from Lithuania to South Africa and then on again to Australia is one of the most extraordinary. For the first time, migrants, family and friends can discover the fascinating details of what led to the migration and re-migration of so many thousands of people. Worlds Apart is a study of a unique double translocation. It follows the footsteps of Lithuanian and Latvian-descended Jews (Litvaks) from their ancestral European homes to South Africa and then again, just a century later, to Australia and New Zealand. The authors describe the life of the forebears, both in Lithuania and in South Africa, the so-called Ã?«South African way of lifeÃ?Â-; the anti-semitic forces there which might have propelled migration much earlier, but didnÃ?Â-t; and the political unrest which finally led to this Ã?«second DiasporaÃ?Â- to the Antipodes and other parts of the world. Worlds Apart examines the patterns of recent emigrations, and the real and ostensible reasons for leaving. Based on hundreds of responses to a detailed questionnaire and dozens of interviews, Worlds Apart presents an unforgettable picture of how life for Lithuanian Jews was, what it became, and what it is today in new lands with new hopes for the future. It examines how and why Jews continue their millennia-old quest for a new and peaceful land, and how twice-removed Jews feel today, not just about their new homes, but about the trials and tribulations of their ancestors. The authors are South African Jewish Ã?Â?migrÃ?Â?s: two are of the early 1960s vintage and one arrived in the early 1980s. Colin Tatz is a social scientist and historian; Peter Arnold is a medical practitioner turned editor and genealogist; Gillian Heller is a professor of statistics.

Jewish meaning in a world of choice: studies in tradition and modernity

Ellenson, David Harry
"Internationally recognized scholar David Ellenson shares twenty-three of his most representative essays, drawing on three decades of scholarship and demonstrating the consistency of the intellectual-religious interests that have animated him throughout his lifetime. These essays center on a description and examination of the complex push and pull between Jewish tradition and Western culture. Ellenson addresses gender equality, women's rights, conversion, issues relating to who is a Jew, the future of the rabbinate, Jewish day schools, and other emerging trends in American Jewish life. As an outspoken advocate for a strong Israel that is faithful to the democratic and Jewish values that informed its founders, he also writes about religious tolerance and pluralism in the Jewish state. The former president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, the primary seminary of the Reform movement, Ellenson is widely respected for his vision of advancing Jewish unity and of preparing leadership for a contemporary Judaism that balances tradition with the demands of a changing world. Scholars and students of Jewish religious thought, ethics, and modern Jewish history will welcome this erudite collection by one of today's great Jewish leaders"--

About the Book Books on Jewish History discuss the development of the Jewish culture and religion over more than three millennia. Jews were dispersed through in Babylonian, Egypt, throughout the Roman Empire, and later throughout Europe and much of the world. After emancipation: Jewish religious responses to modernity

Ellenson, David Harry
David Ellenson prefaces this fascinating collection of twenty-three essays with a remarkably candid account of his intellectual journey from boyhood in Virginia to the scholarly immersions in the history, thought, and literature of the Jewish people that have informed his research interests in a long and distinguished academic career. Ellenson, President of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, has been particularly intrigued by the attempts of religious leaders in all denominations of Judaism, from Liberal to Neo-Orthodox, to redefine and reconceptualize themselves and their traditions in the modern period as both the Jewish community and individual Jews entered radically new realms of possibility and change. The essays are grouped into five sections. In the first, Ellenson reflects upon the expression of Jewish values and Jewish identity in contemporary America, explains his debt to Jacob Katz's socio-religious approach to Jewish history, and shows how the works of non-Jewish social historian Max Weber highlight the tensions between the universalism of western thought and Jewish demands for a particularistic identity. In the second section, "The Challenge of Emanicpation," he indicates how Jewish religious leaders in nineteenth-century Europe labored to demonstrate that the Jewish religion and Jewish culture were worthy of respect by the larger gentile world. In a third section, "Denominational Responses," Ellenson shows how the leaders of Liberal and Orthodox branches of Judaism in Central Europe constructed novel parameters for their communities through prayer books, legal writings, sermons, and journal articles. The fourth section, "Modern Responsa," takes a close look at twentieth-century Jewish legal decisions on new issues such as the status of woemn, fertility treatments, and even the obligations of the Israeli government towards its minority populations. Finally, review essays in the last section analyze a few landmark contemporary works of legal and liturgical creativity: the new Israeli Masorti prayer book, David Hartman's works on covenantal theology, and Marcia Falk's Book of Blessings. As Ellenson demonstrates, "The reality of Jewish cultural and social integration into the larger world after Emancipation did not signal the demise of Judaism. Instead, the modern setting has provided a challenging context where the ongoing creativity and adaptability of Jewish religious leaders of all stripes has been tested and displayed."

Theory of Functionals: And of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations

Volterra, Vito,Fantappiè, Luigi
"Theory of Functionals: And of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations" is a foundational treatise in the field of mathematical analysis, representing the culmination of Vito Volterra's pioneering research into the calculus of variations and the generalization of functions. As one of the most significant figures in late 19th and early 20th-century mathematics, Volterra introduces a systematic approach to functionals-functions that depend on other functions-providing a rigorous framework for what is now known as functional analysis. The work explores the properties of integral and integro-differential equations, detailing their development and their profound implications for both pure mathematics and mathematical physics. Volterra examines the transition from finite-dimensional space to infinite-dimensional space, offering insights into the behavior of systems where the current state depends on past history. Edited and expanded from his influential lectures, this volume serves as an essential resource for understanding the historical development of modern analysis. It remains a vital reference for mathematicians and physicists interested in the evolution of linear operators and the mathematical modeling of complex physical phenomena. Communicology: mutations in human relations?

Flusser, Vilém
"Communicology is Vilém Flusser's first ever thesis on his concepts of technical images and technical imagination. In this foundational text he lays the groundwork for later work, offering a philosophical approach to communication as a phenomena that permeates every aspect of human existence. Clearly organized around questions such as "What is Communication," "What are Codes," and "What is Technical Imagination" the work touches on theatre, photography, film, television, and more. Originally written in 1978, but only posthumously published in German, the book is one of the clearest statements of Flusser's theory of communication as involving a variably mediated relation between humans and the world. Although Flusser was writing in the pre-digital 1970s, his work demonstrates a prescience that makes it of significant contemporary interest to scholars in visual culture, art history, media studies, and philosophy"--

The Critique of Pure Music Die Kritik Der Reinen Musik

Oskar Adler
Dr. Oskar Adler (1875-1955), of Vienna, Austria, was a physician, esoteric scholar, 1st violin of the Adler Quartet, and Arnold Schoenberg's first music teacher and lifelong friend. The Critique of Pure Music - and his original German Kritik, written in 1918, remained unpublished until now. This bilingual English-German edition was translated by Michaela Meiser of Austria. Publisher and Editor, Amy Shapiro previously published Dr. Oskar Adler: A Complete Man, plus his The Testament of Astrology. Adler's timeless reflections serve as a healing balm in our stormy times. As he writes (Ch. 2, "Essence and Origin of Music," p. 116): "Life means to understand the eternal "Now" within oneself. Any living being that is not "living in the now," does not live but is being lived. To live in the now is only possible through the inner rhythm of time - through synthesizing the perfect contradiction of unreal and real, the gnostic expression of which is becoming. Our living self is thus captured in its innermost core through the art of music, as the art of pure becoming, thus the art of being utterly alive." Reviewer's Quotes: Composer Reese Scott describes it as "a phenomenon of a unique time - the interface of the old European world with the 20th century --especially keenly felt in Vienna. It interfaces music, spirituality, anthropology, astrology, number and psychology, and transcends time in a way unique to Adler. It's a curious combination of pure sincerity mixed with relentless pedantry --he dishes out intuitions and ideas with no apology and talks about music's spiritual basis, as if it were a touching prayer. The primary force behind Adler's unique ideas is cosmic and esoteric. His work is deeply steeped in many traditions, and yet full of odd eccentricities, as shown by his unusual nomenclature for modal scales, his ideas on music and triangles, and his cosmic symbolism reminiscent of much older authors, such as Kepler." Prof. Dr. Alfred Pfabigan of Philosophical Practice Märzstraße, Vienna writes, "Austrian Intellectual History research owes great thanks to the editor and translator of Oskar Adler's book. Not only that much of this lost work is still valid today, it also offers an inside look into the way of thinking as articulated in the legendary "Fin de siècle - Vienna" and which surely - unnoticed by research - also emanated to Adler's pupils, as for example Schönberg." For more information, visit NewAgeSages.com.

The Outlaws of Maroon: a novel

Curl, John
An adult novel about the world of children. In McCarthy-era New York City, fourth graders find a forgotten room in the foundations of a building, where they struggle to live their dreams. As the cold war of 1950s America envelops their school, they become radicalized. “Novels such as John Curl’s The Outlaws of Maroon, which capture a child’s point of view and examine the intersection of history and social justice, hold an important place in American literature. Think of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Books such as these both illuminate moments in history and remind us to pay attention to children: we can learn from them, for they are paying attention to the world.” — Lucille Lang Day
