Fads and fallacies in the social sciences

Goldberg, Steven
Steven Goldberg has devoted his career to exposing fallacious reasoning, misrepresented fact, and ideological agendas in the social sciences. His scholarly critiques offer alternative, and sometimes controversial, explanations that are notable for their logical integrity and loyalty to empirical reality. Best known for his work in the physiological roots of sex differences, he has also written on a myriad of other subjects, which, as he bluntly states, "are as fallaciously reasoned in professional journals as in the cocktail party conversations that naively repeat the errors first propounded in those journals." In this new collection of essays he is as lively, interesting, and provocative as ever. Among the subjects addressed are the validity of intelligence tests, group differences, the death penalty, sex differences in aggression and cognition, the family, abortion, and the nature of modern society. Also included are a couple of polemics, observations on the O. J. Simpson trial, and a moving encomium to his hero, Jackie Robinson. Goldberg's work has been praised by reviewers as "persuasive and accurate"(Margaret Mead); "coolly, tightly, even brilliantly reasoned" (Morton Kaplan); and "the most significant . . . on the subject in decades" (Murray Rothbard). Readers who appreciate razor-sharp rigor and logical elegance will be richly rewarded by these essays on many of the most hotly contested issues of the social sciences.

Israel In Palestine: Jewish Rejection of Zionism

Rabkin, Yakov M
In the wake of the Hamas attack of October 7 and the Israeli response, historian and current affairs commentator Yakov Rabkin brings together his writings that shed light on the violence in Palestine since the creation of the State of Israel. For decades, Yakov Rabkin has drawn attention to the danger Israel has posed to both Palestinians and Jews, both in Israel and in other countries. Far from protecting Jews, the State of Israel has contributed to creating and aggravating a situation that over time has become increasingly intractable. The author describes Palestine as it was on the eve of Zionist colonisation, recalling how Jews initially reacted to the Zionist movement and its goals. He highlights how Zionism, disdaining Jewish tradition, created a "new Hebrew man" steeped in a powerful mix of victimhood and exclusive nationalism and therefore oblivious to the fate of the Palestinians. He reminds us that Jewish identity is traditionally based on a spiritual commitment open to all races, the concept of Israel denoting not so much a geographical region but a community of believers. A return to the Land of Israel achieved by political and military means is antithetic to the Jewish tradition. In fact, Zionism has well-documented Protestant and Anglo-Saxon roots, which explains the massive support Israel enjoys among millions of Evangelical Christians around the world, and, on the other hand, why Jews have played such a prominent role in the pro-Palestinian protests sparked by violence against Gaza. At the same time, it shows how since 1967, there emerged a new national Judaism to provide religious legitimacy to the Zionist state. Avoiding polemics and sensationalism, this book allows the reader to reconsider the nature of the Israel/Palestine tragedy that has spilled over beyond Israel/Palestine. The book is rather short and targets the general reader. It requires no previous expertise in the subject, yet shows deeper and less known aspects of the conflict and, thus, opens perspectives on novel approaches to peace. This book has also been published in French, Japanese and Spanish language editions

Watchmen in the night: Presidential accountability after Watergate

Sorensen, Theodore C.
In Watchmen in the Night Theodore Sorenson, lawyer and advisor to President John F. Kennedy, offers a comprehensive examination of Watergate and what Richard Nixon's reign and resignation mean to the American Presidency. Rejecting both the assertion that Nixon was a mere aberration and the assertion that Watergate was a culmination of what other Presidents had done, Sorenson sorts out what was new and different in Watergate, including some frank admissions about the Kennedy White House. The Presidency as seen from the inside is not as powerful as it looks from the outside, he writes, commenting on the limitations imposed by the bureaucracy, the press, the Congress, and the courts. Sorenson, while acknowledging a change in perspective since his White House days, still favors a strong Presidency and in fact believes it should be stronger on economic matters. Nevertheless, he feels too strongly about Vietnam and Watergate to defend the status quo, and insists on specific steps to implement "accountability." He deflates the mystique of the Presidency, urges reform in our selection of Presidents, and suggests specific clues for which to look in predicting presidential megalomania. His comparison of the Nixon and Kennedy staffs is particularly insightful. All of this is illustrated with examples of good and bad uses of presidential power. Watchmen in the Night gives the reader an extraordinary sense of how the White House is run and how it should be run.

Der Judenstaat: Theodor Herzl

Herzl, Theodor
This is the original German edition of Der Judenstaat by Theodor Herzl, republished by Comprehendible Classics. For our new modern English translation, please visit our Author Page. "The Jewish State" (“Der Judenstaat”) by Theodor Herzl is considered one of the most important texts of modern Zionism. Written in 1896, this work significantly influenced the Zionist movement and the establishment of the modern State of Israel. Herzl, a Jewish journalist and political thinker from Austria, argued that the best way to avoid the widespread and rampant antisemitism was to create an independent Jewish state. In The Jewish State, Herzl paints a vivid picture of a homeland for the Jewish people, and shares intricate details about the foundations of this envisioned nation. He also explores the topic of identity and the relentless pursuit of a place to belong. Herzl's vision is a testament to the extraordinary capacity of an individual's ideas to mold the course of history. In fact, he's often called the father of modern political Zionism, and is officially referred to as "the spiritual father of the Jewish State" in the Israeli Declaration of Independence. The Integrity Gap: When Good Intentions Undermine Truth: A Field Guide to the Political Meme Ecosystem

Fry Ph.D., Stephen M.
POLITICAL MEMES TRADE ACCURACY FOR REACH What spreads fastest online isn’t always what’s true. And most of us are helping it spread. In today’s political landscape, a single meme can reach millions of people before anyone checks whether the claim inside it is accurate. Images move faster than evidence. Outrage travels farther than nuance. And across the political spectrum, accuracy is quietly being traded for impact. This is the Integrity Gap. The Integrity Gap is a full-color visual field guide to the modern political meme. Using 99 real political memes as case studies, the book breaks down the hidden mechanics that make viral political content so persuasive—and so difficult to question, even when we sense something is off. What makes this book different is its method. The author built his framework by fact-checking political content he personally agreed with, not just content from the other side. The result is a rare and honest investigation that holds every side to the same standard. Each chapter dissects a specific persuasion mechanism at work inside real images: fabricated and misattributed quotes that borrow credibility from figures who never said them; fake or misleading headlines designed to feel authoritative; emotional framing that bypasses critical thinking; selective statistics and stripped context that turn partial truths into viral ones; and escalating rhetoric that gradually erodes the credibility of the people sharing it. Readers will come away with practical tools they can use immediately, including the 30-Second Meme Audit, the Reverse Lens Test, and the Escalation Ladder—frameworks for slowing down, spotting manipulation, and deciding when not sharing is the most responsible choice. The Integrity Gap is not a book about which political side is right. It is a book about how belief is shaped, how misinformation spreads, and how to take back control of what you amplify.

Contesting tears: the Hollywood melodrama of the unknown woman

Cavell, Stanley
What is marriage? Can a relationship dedicated to equality, friendship, and mutual education flower in an atmosphere of romance? What are the paths between loving another and knowing another? Stanley Cavell identified a genre of classic American films that engaged these questions in his study of comedies of remarriage, Pursuits of Happiness . With Contesting Tears , Cavell demonstrates that a contrasting genre, which he calls "the melodrama of the unknown woman," shares a surprising number and weave of concerns with those comedies. Cavell provides close readings of four melodramas he finds definitive of the genre: Letter from an Unknown Woman , Gaslight , Now Voyager , and Stella Dallas . The women in these melodramas, like the women in the comedies, demand equality, shared education, and transfiguration, exemplifying for Cavell a moral perfectionism he identifies as Emersonian. But unlike the comedies, which portray a quest for a shared existence of expressiveness and joy, the melodramas trace instead the woman's recognition that in this quest she is isolated. Part of the melodrama concerns the various ways the men in the films (and the audiences of the films) interpret and desire to force the woman's consequent inaccessibility. "Film is an interest of mine," Stanley Cavell has written, "or say a love, not separate from my interest in, or love of, philosophy." In Contesting Tears Cavell once again brilliantly unites his two loves, using detailed and perceptive musings on melodrama to reflect on philosophical problems of skepticism, psychoanalysis, and perfectionism. As he shows, the fascination and intelligence of such great stars as Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, and Barbara Stanwyck illuminate, as they are illuminated by, the topics and events of these beloved and enduring films.

A Fist in the Hornet's Nest: On the Ground in Baghdad Before, During & After the War

Richard Engel
When war broke out in Iraq, every major U.S. network pulled its correspondents from the scene. Despite the risk, Richard Engel stayed. As our tanks entered Baghdad in April 2003, he was there, bringing the Iraqi war into American homes as a stringer for ABC news. Determined to deliver the whole Middle East story, Engel moved to Cairo in 1996 after graduating from Stanford to learn 'street' Arabic. Then to dig even deeper into the complicated powder-keg of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he settled in Jerusalem. Now as Iraq enters its post-war phase and the Gulf region continues to dominate our nation's consciousness, more and more Americans will come to know and trust Richard Engel--especially in his current role as a correspondent for NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. Both analytical and anecdotal, this book leads us through the war in Iraq, dissecting a myriad of Middle East issues, all from the vantage point of someone who is 'on the ground and in the streets' to get the real story.

Countering Terrorism: Blurred Focus, Halting Steps

Posner, Richard A.
In this third book of a series on intelligence reform, Judge Richard A. Posner evaluates the measures that have been taken in the last two years to implement the Intelligence Reform Act of 2004, which decreed a wholesale reorganization of the intelligence system. Countering Terrorism also addresses broader issues in the struggle against terrorism, such as the failure of criminal law enforcement and the difficulty of devising criteria for allocating counterterrorist funds. Although some successes have been achieved in the effort to make our intelligence system more coherent and effective, notably with respect to intelligence analysis and "open source" intelligence, progress overall has been slow, owing in major part to the deflection of senior officials of the intelligence community from overall supervision and coordination to short-term crisis management. Of particular concern, domestic intelligence remains in serious disarray, dangerously exposing the nation to the emergent threat of homegrown, as distinct from foreign-initiated, terrorism. Commitment and Healing Gay Men and the Need for Romantic Love

Richard A. Isay
In his many years working with gay patients, psychiatrist Richard Isay has found that regardless of the original reasons they seek help, the majority of gay men eventually bring up their problems with romantic love. Some have difficulty falling in love and even more find it hard to sustain a loving, romantic relationship. If you experience these issues in your life, Commitment and Healing offers hope. Filled with fascinating case histories drawn from Dr. Isay's practice, this compassionate and inspiring book examines how parental rejection or a lack of empathy with the needs of a homosexual child may later on inhibit a gay man's capacity to feel and express his need for love. Some gay men grow habituated to the means they have relied on to seek happiness without intimacy or intimacy without commitment. Many feel unworthy of romantic love or remain unaware of it until midlife. In Commitment and Healing , Isay writes that a loving relationship over many years is the antidote for the loneliness and the rejection most gay men have experienced in their lives. While the book is a clear and empathetic exploration of the barriers many encounter, Isay shows that it is indeed possible for this generation of gay men to overcome their fear of commitment and learn how rewarding a loving, long-term relationship can be.
