The real report on the last chance to save capitalism in Italy

Sanguinetti, Gianfranco
The Real Report appeared under the pseudonym 'Censor' when Sanguinetti, a former member of the Situationist International, mailed his brilliant fake to 520 elite Italian industrialists, academics, journalists and politicians in 1975. Posing as a cultured Italian aristocrat and with a sweeping knowledge of history, classical literature, politics and military strategy, 'Censor' sounded like a conservative from another era, an heir to Dante and Machiavelli, counseling his executive peers in response to autonomous workers' strikes that were sweeping the country. Having been deported from France in 1971 and freshly released from jail on false weapons charges, Sanguinetti succeeded in causing a scandal while laying bare the secret machinations of the state and covert manipulation of terrorist groups by the intelligence services. Translated for the first time in English, by Len Bracken, with a translator's preface and appendix.

The Face of Terror

Litvinoff, Emanuel.
Peter is still a senior intelligence officer in the Cheka, now renamed the NKVD, and had just been awarded the Order of Lenin for his years of successful service. He still believes that the execution of former comrades for their Trotskyist connections is justified. Lydia, though still a communist, is sickened by all the killing, by the lies and by the stifling atmosphere of Stalinism. After having worked for the Cheka in the previous volume, she has resigned from intelligence work, for which she had been awarded the Order of the Red Banner. She is now working in Glavlit, the state censorship office (there is some improbability here, I think) and is temperamentally more indulgent and less rigorous in that role than her colleagues. And she is too sensitive in her understanding of literature to pass a grotesque Soviet interpretation of Macbeth. The Party, having liquidated its external enemies in the Soviet Union, is now combing through its own members, however exalted, to detect - or invent - the slightest sign of deviation. It is the time of the great purges after the murder of Kirov. Peter and Lydia have a malevolent enemy in the party, Boris Spichalsky, who had felt slighted by them in the previous volume, and he is relishes it when he is told to keep them under observation. Peter, on one of his missions to Germany, found himself under a chance arrest by the Gestapo who suspected he was spying for the Swiss. They had just started to torture him when a Soviet plant in the SS secured his release, and he returned to Moscow. But there he was now under suspicion of what he might have given away during his interrogation.

Why I Am a Jew (Classic Reprint)

David De Sola Pool
Excerpt from Why I Am a Jew I offer this small book humbly, as a sheaf garnered from the rich harvest of Judaism. A massive literature, a history of four thousand years, a courageous, articulate and unend ing struggle for moral determinism, cannot readily be com pressed, nor would I make bold to attempt to do this without the earnest hope that this book may be but an introduction to the study of the great tradition which it is our heritage to know, to understand and to share. Poems in the manner of

Lehman, David
"Poems in the Manner Of is an illuminating journey through centuries of writers who continue to influence new work today, including that of respected poet and series editor of The Best American Poetry David Lehman. "Very few writers can actually shape how you see the world. David Lehman is such a writer," says Robert Olen Butler. Now the Best American Poetry series editor and New School writing professor channels, translates, and imagines a collection of "poems in the manner of" Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Shakespeare, W.B. Yeats, Rilke, William Carlos Williams, and more. Lehman has been writing "poems in the manner of" for years, in homage to the poems and people that have left an impression, experimenting with styles and voices that have lingered in his mind. Finally, he has gathered these pieces, creating a striking book of poems that channels poets from Walt Whitman to Sylvia Plath and also calls upon jazz standards, Freudian questionnaires, and astrological profiles for inspiration. Intelligent and sparkling, this is a great gift for poetry fans and a useful resource for creative writers. These are poems of wit and humor but also deep emotion and clear intelligence, informed by Lehman's genuine and knowledgeable love of poetry and literature. From Catullus and Lady Murasaki to Wordsworth, Neruda, Virginia Woolf, W.H. Auden, and Charles Bukowski, Poems in the Manner Of shows how much life there is in poets of the past. And like Edward Hirsch's How to Read a Poem and Robert Pinsky's Singing School, this book gives you more than poetry. Whether you're reading for pure enjoyment or examining how a poet can use references and influences in their own work, Poems in the Manner Of is a treasure trove of literary pleasures and food for thought"--

Meaning and Modality

Casimir Lewy
A study of various central and connected topics in philosophical logic and the theory of meaning. There are important sections on the relation between linguistic and abstract entities, on necessity and convention, on meaning, sense and reference, and on entailment. Dr Lewy proposes a number of original solutions to problems which have been widely discussed in literature, and there is in particular a sharp and sustained criticism of conventionalism and reductionism. These are among the most difficult and intricate issues in contemporary philosophy, but Dr Lewy writes with great clarity and a minimum of technicality. Where his views are controversial they are explained and supported in a detail which makes it both possible and necessary for potential critics to state their disagreement precisely. The book should therefore be of value as an advanced textbook as well as an original contribution to philosophical logic.

The parliament of animals: anecdotes and legends from books of natural history, 1775-1900

Sax, Boria
"The Parliament of Animals represents a scholarly treatise on folkloric and literary narratives of animals. Each chapter on such creatures as elephants, monkeys, rats, snakes, dogs, wolves, cats, and birds includes informative introductions concerning the behavior and psychology of these animals and their relationship to their human counterparts. Useful select bibliographies on zoology, literature, folklore and language conclude these introductory comments which are followed by intriguing fables, legends, anecdotes and literary works concerning the animals under discussion. This book is thus a novel approach to the fascinating subject of the depiction of animals in prose writings over many centuries, giving scholarly information while at the same time providing a splendid collection of readable and enjoyable narratives from anonymous or known authors. The reader is easily engaged by this anthologized treatise on animal behavior, intelligence and psychology, and the obvious result is a better understanding and appreciation of both the animal and the human world. It is exactly this all-inclusive approach to animal narratives that makes this book by Boria Sax such worthwhile reading for naturalists, folklorists, cultural historians, literary scholars, and last but not least, the interested generalists."

The African worker

Freund, Bill
The African Worker, first published in 1988, was intended as a synthesis considering issues and debates from the work of many writers on labour history and labour studies in Africa. The development of a particular critical literature, spanning a number of disciplines, is critically considered. In some respects, the concerns of past generations have been to align the understanding of labour issues in Africa with those more generally in the modern world. In others, the emphasis remains on the specific and African. Both directions clearly emerge here. The bibliographical essay, as well as the bibliography itself, is meant to point readers further who want a higher order of detail, a regional focus or a more thorough-going theoretical treatment of all or some of the relevant issues.
