Introducing the Universe

Felix Pirani,Christine Roche
"From Aristotle to Newton, Einstein and quantum mechanics, Introducing the Universe recounts the revolutions in physics and astronomy that underlie the present-day scientific picture of the Universe. It describes the scale of things, from atoms to galactic superclusters, and sketches the cosmological theories, based on Einstein's general relativity, used to describe the Universe's expansion. The book also discusses the significance of the cosmic background satellite observations, and explains why current theories have nothing reliable to say about whether the Universe had a 'beginning'."--BOOK JACKET.

Functional integration and quantum physics

Simon, Barry
The main theme of this book is the 'path integral technique' and its applications to constructive methods of quantum physics. The central topic is probabilistic foundations of the Feynman-Kac formula. Starting with main examples of Gaussian processes (the Brownian motion, the oscillatory process, and the Brownian bridge), the author presents four different proofs of the Feynman-Kac formula. Also included is a simple exposition of stochastic Ito calculus and its applications, in particular to the Hamiltonian of a particle in a magnetic field (the Feynman-Kac-Ito formula).Among other topics discussed are the probabilistic approach to the bound of the number of ground states of correlation inequalities (the Birman-Schwinger principle, Lieb's formula, etc.), the calculation of asymptotics for functional integrals of Laplace type (the theory of Donsker-Varadhan) and applications, scattering theory, the theory of crushed ice, and the Wiener sausage. Written with great care and containing many highly illuminating examples, this classic book is highly recommended to anyone interested in applications of functional integration to quantum physics. It can also serve as a textbook for a course in functional integration.

Selected topics in field quantization

Pauli, Wolfgang
In the 1950s the distinguished theoretical physicist Wolfgang Pauli delivered a landmark series of lectures at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of classical and modern physics was painstakingly recorded not only by his students, but also by a number of collaborators whose carefully edited transcriptions resulted in a remarkable six-volume work. This volume, the sixth in the series, focuses on selected topics in field quantization and considers such subjects as quantization of the electron-positron field, response to an external field, quantization of free fields, quantum electrodynamics, interacting fields, the Heisenberg representation, the S-matrix, and Feynman's approach to quantum electrodynamics. As does each book in the series, Volume 6 includes an index and a wealth of helpful figures. Originally published in 1973, the text remains entirely relevant thanks to Pauli's manner of presentation. As Victor F. Weisskopf notes in the Foreword to the series, Pauli's style is "commensurate to the greatness of its subject in its clarity and impact…. Pauli's lectures show how physical ideas can be presented clearly

Transformative Whirling Shahram Shiva's Unique and Proven 4-Step Method to Whirling

Shahram Shiva
NOTE: Mr. Shiva's 4-Step Method to Whirling has been successfully and continuously taught to groups in some of the most prestigious institutions and resorts in the country since 1995. Please ignore the random negative reviews, as they obviously failed to follow the steps properly. Shahram Shiva has invented a unique new breakthrough technique that makes it possible for all to whirl comfortably, competently, without any dizziness or discomfort. The beauty of this system and key to its success are in its simplicity. Since 1995, Shahram Shiva has helped tens of thousands of people to whirl comfortably and competently. Some of his whirling students, including Deepak Chopra, teach this method in their workshops.Shahram Shiva's guided group whirling has been featured on CNN, and he's taught it for many years at Kripalu Center, Omega Institute, NY Open Center among many other universities and institutions. He's worked with choreographers and stage directors for whirling shows. Also performed and has trained dancers to whirl at New York's Joyce and LaMama theaters. Furthermore he trained the actor Robert Downey Jr. to whirl in the movie Game 6.TAPPING INTO THE CORE OF THE UNIVERSEWhirling affects you on physical, mental, spiritual and psychological levels. Whirling can instantly change your mood. It can brighten it and bring a smile to your face. Whirling is a meditative movement and a form of meditation. Whirling can almost instantly create a state of meditation. Shahram Shiva calls it "active meditation" vs. the classic Buddha posture which he calls "passive meditation." This active form of meditation helps center the body and the mind within a short few minutes.Whirling is an ancient form of centering and meditation. It has been used in many spiritual cultures throughout the world. Through whirling we harmonize with the energy of the creation and form a more positive energy around us. Dervishes drop their black cloaks (a representative of their bodies) and begin to whirl as divine entities wearing all white. They believe that while they are whirling they are closest to being divine. Whirling is a wonderful form of zero to low impact exercise. Whirling is also good for weight loss. Practicing whirling on regular basis will keep you lean, vibrant and full of energy. All matter in our universe is in a constant state of spinning, from subatomic particles to solar systems and galaxies. Every particle in our body and all that is around us are already spinning. Shahram Shiva's method is based on basic laws of physics and the common thread between all physical manifestations. This method is non-ritualistic by design. Students by following this proven method without any prior training can begin whirling immediately.

Eye of the hurricane: an autobiography

Bellman, Richard
This is a very frank and detailed account by a leading and very active mathematician of the past decades whose contributions have had an important impact in those fields where mathematics is now an integral part. It starts from his early childhood just after the First World War to his present-day positions as professor of mathematics, electrical engineering and medicine at the USC, which in itself reflects on the diversity of interests and experiences gained through the turbulent years when American mathematics and sciences established themselves on the forefront. The story traces the tortuous path Bellman followed from Brooklyn College; the University of Wisconsin to Princeton during the war years; more than a decade with the RAND Corporation; with frequent views of more than just the academic circles, including his experiences at Los Alamos on the A-bomb project.Bellman gives highly personalised views of key personalities in mathematics, physics and other areas, and his motivations and the forces that helped shape dynamic programming and other new areas which emerged as consequences of fruitful applications of mathematics.

Nonlinear Problems in Random Theory

Norbert Wiener
2013 Reprint of 1958 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. A series of lectures on the role of nonlinear processes in physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, physiology, and communication theory. From the preface: "For some time I have been interested in a group of phenomena depending upon random processes. One the one hand, I have recorded the random shot effect as a suitable input for testing nonlinear circuits. On the other hand, for some of the work that Professor W. A. Rosenblith and I have been doing concerning the nature of the electroencephalogram, and in particular of the alpha rhythm, it has occurred to me to use the model of a system of random nonlinear oscillators excited by a random input. . . . At the beginning we had contemplated a series of only four or five lectures. My ideas developed pari passu with the course, and by the end of the term we found ourselves with a set of fifteen lectures. The last few of these were devoted to the application of my ideas to problems in the statistical mechanics of gases. This work is both new and tentative, and I found that I had to supplement my course by the writing over of these with the help of Professer Y. W. Lee. "

Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics

Prigogine, I.
Ilya Prigogine won the 1977 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to non-equilibrium thermodynamics. This groundbreaking 1962 monograph, written for researchers and graduate students in this field, was his first book-length contribution to this subject. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in physics and chemistry, the treatment begins with examinations of the Liouville equation, anharmonic solids, and Brownian motion. Subsequent chapters explore weakly coupled gases, scattering theory and short-range forces, distribution functions and their diagrammatic representation, the time dependence of diagrams, the approach to equilibrium in ionized gases, and statistical hydrodynamics. Additional topics include general kinetic equations, general H-theorem, quantum mechanics, and irreversibility and invariants of motion. Appendices, a bibliography, list of symbols, and an index conclude the text. An anxious peace: a Cold War memoir

Mark, Hans
By any measure, Hans Mark was a warrior of the Cold War. Born in Mannheim, Germany, in 1929, he spent his early childhood in Vienna before escaping the Nazi Anschluss in 1938 and eventually emigrating to the United States, settling in New York. He graduated from high school in 1947, went west to attend the University of California, Berkeley, and later earned a PhD in physics from MIT. His work in nuclear engineering soon set him on a path that would be shaped by aeronautics, space exploration, and national defense. It was through advanced technology that Mark believed the United States could win the Cold War. In An Anxious Peace , Mark recounts in detail his life as a twentieth-century “rocket man.” Here is the inside story of one who—in a career spanning more than six decades—was on the technological front line, from long-range bombers to the space shuttle. Along the way, Mark reveals many never-before-told stories from life at NASA and more. Readers will revel in learning the background behind the decision to place a plaque on Pioneer 10 , a space probe that the NASA Ames Research Center designed to fly past the asteroid belt, Jupiter, and Saturn to collect data and images. Mark tells how he, Carl Sagan, and NASA insider John Naugle kept secret the addition of the now iconic 6x9-inch aluminum “message from humanity” until the probe had been launched. To this day Mark is pushing for a manned mission to Mars. One thing is sure: Hans Mark has left a major impact on academic and scientific communities that will be felt for decades to come.

Modern Fluid Dynamics for Physics and Astrophysics

Oded Regev,Orkan M. Umurhan,Philip A. Yecko
This book grew out of the need to provide students with a solid introduction to modern fluid dynamics. It offers a broad grounding in the underlying principles and techniques used, with some emphasis on applications in astrophysics and planetary science. The book comprehensively covers recent developments, methods and techniques, including, for example, new ideas on transitions to turbulence (via transiently growing stable linear modes), new approaches to turbulence (which remains the enigma of fluid dynamics), and the use of asymptotic approximation methods, which can give analytical or semi-analytical results and complement fully numerical treatments. The authors also briefly discuss some important considerations to be taken into account when developing a numerical code for computer simulation of fluid flows. Although the text is populated throughout with examples and problems from the field of astrophysics and planetary science, the text is eminently suitable as a general introduction to fluid dynamics. It is assumed that the readers are mathematically equipped with a reasonable knowledge in analysis, including basics of ordinary and partial differential equations and a good command of vector calculus and linear algebra. Each chapter concludes with bibliographical notes in which the authors briefly discuss the chapter's essential literature and give recommendations for further, deeper reading. Included in each chapter are a number of problems, some of them relevant to astrophysics and planetary science. The book is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, but will also prove a valuable source of reference for established researchers.
