Loewner's Theorem on Monotone Matrix Functions

Barry Simon
This book provides an in depth discussion of Loewner’s theorem on the characterization of matrix monotone functions. The author refers to the book as a ‘love poem,’ one that highlights a unique mix of algebra and analysis and touches on numerous methods and results. The book details many different topics from analysis, operator theory and algebra, such as divided differences, convexity, positive definiteness, integral representations of function classes, Pick interpolation, rational approximation, orthogonal polynomials, continued fractions, and more. Most applications of Loewner’s theorem involve the easy half of the theorem. A great number of interesting techniques in analysis are the bases for a proof of the hard half. Centered on one theorem, eleven proofs are discussed, both for the study of their own approach to the proof and as a starting point for discussing a variety of tools in analysis. Historical background and inclusion of pictures of some of the main figures who have developed the subject, adds another depth of perspective. The presentation is suitable for detailed study, for quick review or reference to the various methods that are presented. The book is also suitable for independent study. The volume will be of interest to research mathematicians, physicists, and graduate students working in matrix theory and approximation, as well as to analysts and mathematical physicists.

Catbird: the ballad of Barbi Prim

Ostfeld, Barbara J.
"In Catbird: The Ballad of Barbi Prim, the world meets an insightful, opinionated eight-year-old who's already taken a few steps toward becoming a pioneer--but also a shadow of her quirky self. Although she's corroded--sometimes literally--by a toxic but familiar social atmosphere, her love of singing propels her to become the first ordained woman cantor in 3,000 years of Jewish history. A family crisis exposes old and enduring wounds, but she begins to rescue herself--by diligently going to therapy--and embarks on an imperfect but perpetual metamorphosis, becoming the well-coiffed heroine of her own story. Barbara Ostfeld shows us that we are all brave pioneers--at becoming our true selves." -- Amazon.com.

Coeur de Lion

Reines, Ariana
"Lines that make me want to have sex on the moon."-Thurston Moore Cɶur de Lion is a book-length epistolary love poem that directly addresses a recently lost "you"--in accessible tones yet with extreme erudition and fierce intellect--but that also directly addresses the work of poetic address, how it shifts when the you shifts from a literal recipient, through loss, to poetry itself: art form, tradition; soul-catching medium. It's libidinal, heartful, hot with the memory of what was libidinal and heartfelt and hot. It's also a cult classic: self-published in 2007 and available now to an audience who will recognize the deep influence it has had on contemporary poets and poetry. " Scathing and meek, furious and thoughtful, reckless and careful, brave and frightened , Cɶur de Lion is something you've never seen before that you already know by heart."-- Daniel Handler aka Lemony Snicket "A book of frank witty poetry that makes me laugh, cry, throw things ."-- Lena Dunham "She is in me now like a hot virus and i am smitten."-- Melissa Broder "In Cɶur de Lion the erotics of power and powerlessness are not opposites--they flirt and morph and clash into a brilliant blast of poetic energy . I saw Ariana read from this book at UC Berkeley, and the walls of the academy rumbled. I fucking love this book ." -- Dodie Bellamy "At the time we thought Cɶur de Lion a more comfortable book than The Cow , for it is, after all, a 'love poem' no matter how perverse, but as I look at it again I'm struck by how fierce its valences are, how intransigent its anti-nationalism. Already I think of Reines' work in art as dividing, like Picasso's, into periods, and if this is the rose period it is also the time in which blood rained down on the peoples' heads. Asked for the history of a certain sort of public sex, I mumble that there was Zabriskie Point , and then there was Peter Hujar, and there was Cɶur de Lion. " -- Kevin Killian

The land at the end of the world: a novel

Antunes, António Lobo
"Considered Antonio Lobo Antunes's masterpiece, The land at the end of the world -- now in a new and fully restored translation by acclaimed translator Margaret Jull Costa -- recounts the anguished tale of a Portuguese medic haunted by memories of war, who, like the Ancient Mariner, will tell his tale to anyone who listens. In the tradition of William Faulkner and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, one of the twentieth century's most original literary voices has delivered a haunting and heartrending meditation on the absurdities of love and war"--Back cover

Notes from the Hero's Journey Poetic Fragments of an Internal Odyssey

Al Davis
This book of poems has intent, design, and purpose. They are written to touch something hidden deep within you, something latent, undiscovered, and mysterious. I hope that you may wish to discover more about that of which I speak. For there are answers to your questions if you but seek. That hidden something is true of everyone, almost without exception, but most of us have fallen asleep to the yearning and the searching that it can give rise to. If you are not in the category of the walking dead--and you are truly searching-- perhaps this book will be for you. If you loved fairy tales as a child, would rather travel to ancient sites than take cruises or hang out on a beach, appreciate the mythology from other cultures, enjoy classical art, perhaps read philosophy and great literature, are enthralled by the wonder of the natural world--and the list goes on and on--this book may be of interest to you. Even if your yearning takes other forms, you may love what I've written as well. But the book is not an answer to your yearnings. It can, though, be a window into a world where those same yearnings are addressed, satisfied, and shown a further and meaningful path to take. I wrote it in the language of today (including a small amount of crude language), with some references to literary or artistic works of the past. Despite the simplicity of many of the poems, there is great depth of meaning, if you are open to it. My suggestion would be to read only a few poems at a time, trying to ponder what I am talking about, letting them sink in emotionally, rather than dissecting them intellectually. And certainly don't continue to read until your eyes glaze over, as that will not profit you in the least. Enjoy!

Ubu mayor: a harmful bit of fun : a play with music

Seelig, Adam
"This anti-musical is the result of intoxicatingly driving Alfred Jarry's 1896 merde-filled masterpiece Ubu Roi head-first into the internationally renowned antics, absurdities and obscenities of Toronto's mayor Rob Ford and his brother, Doug. Ubu Mayor tells the frolicsome tale of a mayor (Ubu) whose wife (Huhu) is having an affair with his older brother (Dudu). Ubu wants Huhu to love him again. Ubu wants what's best for the city. But both his love and political ideals are foiled by Dudu's machinations. Readers will enjoy the Fordish banter, presented in Seelig's iconoclastic dramatic style, and enjoy dipping into the music for such ridiculously poignant tunes as "B-b-b-bacon," "Etobicokaine," and "Plenty to Eat at Home."--Publisher's description.

Every day in the morning (slow)

Seelig, Adam
Every Day in the Morning (slow) is a work that looks and reads like no other. Sam, a composer, reflects on his floundering career, life with his lover and tensions with his father. Some thoughts, like facial hair and breakfast, are mundane; others, like love, money and war, are often overwhelming. At turns laughable and vain, at others, tender and considered, Sam's feelings and ideas turn continuously. The result is an oddly lyrical streamof– consciousness that's as conversational as its appearance is unconventional. Spare text and the generous white space invite a distinct interaction with the story, one where every detail, every placement and every repetition influences meaning. The lack of punctuation allows the reader the freedom to internalize this exquisitely crafted work and understand the protagonist's state of mind. The exceptional style of Every Day in the Morning (slow) amounts to a kind of thinging , somewhere between singing and thinking, thing and thought, utter brilliance and complete crap. A novella with long poem features, slow breaks the rules of both genres, while at the same time offering an addictive and compulsive flow that may make it the fastest book you will ever (want to) read.

The Twelfth Hour

Ada Leverson
The Twelfth Hour (1907) is a novel by Ada Leverson. Having established herself as a journalist and short story writer, Leverson published her debut novel to moderate acclaim. Entertaining and effortlessly witty, Leverson's prose paints a stunning portrait of the Edwardian era, a time when hope and relative peace proved prosperous for many. Often compared to her close friend Oscar Wilde, Leverson, a pioneering Jewish woman, remains a unique and refreshing voice in English literature. Felicity, Sylvia, and Savile Crofton all feel the pressure placed on upper-class youths to marry wisely. At 25, Felicity appears to have found herself a good husband, a man of wealth and social standing who on closer appearance seems more interested in leisure than love. Determined not to fall into a similarly unhappy marriage, her 20-year-old sister Sylvia hopes to thwart her father's wish that she marry millionaire Mr. Ridokanski. Although he is only 16, Eton student Savile is deeply in love with a famous opera singer--from a distance--but also feels obliged to entertain the affections of Dolly Clive, a girl his own age. Finding company in their own unique miseries of the heart, the Crofton siblings hatch a plan to achieve happiness for themselves, satisfaction for their father, and whatever it is young people are meant to owe to society. The Twelfth Hour is a humorous tale of romance and desire from Ada Leverson, an underappreciated novelist of the Edwardian era. This edition of Ada Leverson's The Twelfth Hour is a classic work of British literature reimagined for modern readers. Bird of Paradise

Ada Leverson
In London, before the First World War, where in society love and money predominate, Bertha and Nigel had been inseparable. But then Nigel felt he had to focus on the economics of life, and after all Bertha's family were quite modestly off. Whereas the heiress Mary, also interested in him but not anywhere near so charming, was very well set up. His decision was made. Though initially heartbroken, Bertha realises quickly that she has escaped from a delusion. Equanimity returns, and she finds in Percy Kellynch a devoted lover, though one a little more sober and less racy. They marry, as do Nigel and Mary, and over time the two become friends again, though now with wise awareness on Bertha's side. Nigel begins to see his error, as Mary's jealousy and her wish to supervise his life take their toll. He finds comfort in simply seeing Bertha initially, but inevitably begins to wish for more. Bertha is not interested, having moved on, but, if noticed, Nigel's attentions could be misconstrued... In the meantime, Bertha is also looking out for the future of a young friend, Madeline Irwin, who is smitten with Rupert Denison, a young man with rather too much of a penchant for patronising and "educating" young women. Madeline is impulsive, a little inexperienced and quite needy. Her headlong qualities precipitate problems very readily. As Bertha negotiates several crises arising from Nigel's reviving attachment, she also tries to assist Madeline in avoiding her own self-created disasters. Much depends on Bertha's talent for good management and wise counsel in the perils of both their lives. She is determined to win over adversity, but it will be a strong test of her skills.... Bird of Paradise, Leverson's fifth novel, as radiant with wit and wisdom as those which preceded it, was first published in 1914.

Thea: to Alexandria, Jerusalem, and freedom

Aharoni, Ada
Thea: To Alexandria, Jerusalem and Freedom - is a movng and exciting story of life in Egypt during the tumultuous thirties and forties. The kaleidoscope of human events described, over sixty years of our century, gives the reader a sense of having lived and witnessed important moments of history. It is a book which makes a strong protest against war. But most of all it is the story of ordinary people performing extraordinary feats of love for their fellowmen. This is a sincere, well-written and poignant book with universal appeal.

A lovely tale of photography: a film novella

Nádas, Péter
Péter Nádas is one of the most renowned contemporary Hungarian authors. A Lovely Tale of Photography displays his essentially experimental orientation. It is a hallucinatory novella about a female photographer who is suffering from an undetermined illness. Confined to a sanatorium, where she is surrounded by a cast of stock characters speaking various languages, she is made to confront a reality other than that framed by her camera. The novel takes the form of short scenes, as if a film sequence, and this structure lends the text a fairy-tale, poetic quality similar to many surrealist works. Nominated for the 2001 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award
