Curiouser and curiouser: essays

Delbanco, Nicholas
A miscellany of sorts, preeminent author and critic Nicholas Delbanco's Curiouser and Curiouser attests to a lifelong interest in music and the visual arts as well as both "mere" and "sheer" literature. With essays ranging from the restoration of his father-in-law's famed Stradivarius cello--known throughout the world as "The Countess of Stanlein"--to a reimagining of H. A. and Margaret Rey's lives and the creation of their most beloved character, Curious George , Delbanco examines what it means to live and love with the arts. Whether exploring the history of personal viewing in the business of museum-going, musing on the process of rewriting one's earliest published work, or looking back on the twists and turns of a life that spans the greater part of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, Delbanco's Curiouser and Curiouser invites adventurous readers to follow him down the rabbit hole as he reflects on life as a student, an observer, a writer, a lover, a father, a teacher, and most importantly, a participant in the everyday experiences of human life.

Farewell, Babylon

Kattan, Naïm
Product Description From the melting pot that was Iraqi society comes a tale, recounted by a grand old man of Canadian letters, of growing up as a Jewish boy in Baghdad in the 1940s. Naim Kattan was born into an intellectual Jewish family in Baghdad in 1928. He, his brother, and his friend Nessim were the only Jews in a group of young men who met every evening in a cafe to talk passionately abut creating a national Iraqi literature in their newly independent country. They had good reason, for although the Jewish community in Iraq dated back 2500 years, and Jews were abmong the best Arabic scholars in the country, they were never considered equals by the Muslim majority. In 1941, after British forces defeated the German-backed Iraqi insurgents, angry Bedouins entered Baghdad before it could be secured and began the Farhoud, the massacre of Jews in the city. The violence stopped just short of the Kattans' house, but the family immediately began the long application process for visas. Kattan began selling stories to literary magazines and speculating about the role of women in a country where even Jewish women wore veils. He eventually won a scholarship to the Sorbonne and left his family, not to be reunited with them until five years later, when he found them in a settlement camp in Israel This is a memoir of identity, of growing up in a tumultuous polyglot society, of change both personal and societal, of finding one's place in life. Here is a fascinating portrait of a people, a city, a state, and a culture that are as troubled today as Kattan found them sixty years ago. Review A fine portrait of a particular place and time that is no more. --Library Journal In all respects, a most moving and haunting work. --Montreal Star In all respects, a most moving and haunting work. --Montreal Star About the Author Naim Kattan has lived in Montreal since 1954. He has written more than thirty books of poetry, essays and fiction, which have been translated into many different languages. He has received many honors including the France-Canada Prize and France's prestigious Legion d'Honneur.

Replenishing Jessica

Maxwell Bodenheim
One may contend that "Replenishing Jessica" is neither a novel nor an essay, but one cannot deny it is prose. After all, a poet wrote it and he put into is such a phrase as, "He wrapped his dreams in a sigh," which is good even if it does not belong in this novel..." So wrote a critic contemporary of Maxwell Bodenheim in December 1925. Shortly afterwards, the novel was yanked from bookshelves and repressed for reasons of obscenity. It would be almost four years later that Replenishing Jessica would finally be cleared of its charges by a New York judge and available for sale. A new edition was published by Boni & Liveright and sold in excess of 10,000 copies mere days after its revival. Success had landed on Bodenheim's doorstep, but would only last a short while before he was once again at the cusp of personal and financial failure. Replenishing Jessica fell out of print in the early 1950s and has since been forgotten in the annals of Depression-era American literature. Though Bodenheim wrote the novel with its suggestive title in order to turn a quick buck, he managed to also instill into the book a magical realism accurately capturing the sights and sound of Jazz Age New York. Now reprinted for the first time in over 70 years, Bodenheim scholar, Paul Maher Jr., has researched and edited a new edition of Replenishing Jessica for the 21st-century complete with an extensive introduction tracing the history of the book and a biography of Bodenheim between 1925 to 1928.

Hervelino

Lindon, Mathieu
"Mathieu Lindon met the writer and photographer Hervé Guibert in 1978. The nickname Hervelino marked the start of their friendship, which was cemented a decade later by the years they both spent in Rome. Guibert was a pensionnaire at the Villa Médicis starting in 1987; Lindon became a fellow pensionnaire the next year, and the two would stay in Italy until 1990. These Roman years are at the heart of this autobiographie à deux that alternates between humor and melancholy. Guibert had just learned that he was HIV-positive and would die not long after returning to France and rising to fame with his searing masterpiece To the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life--in which Lindon himself was a character. Hervelino is a book about the difficulty of writing and speaking about someone beloved and revered. In recounting their time in Italy, Lindon contends with the impossibility of writing about Guibert: "To write about Rome is to skip over everything I don't dare to write because it's so hard to make sense of Hervé." Hervelino is a story of a singular friendship, and of the books read and shared by the friend who was loved and lost. As it closes with each inscription Guibert wrote for his friend Mathieu and with Lindon's present-day commentary below it, what remains are shards and fragments of a friendship sealed by illness and death, enshrined by literature and love."--

Toward a theory of historical narrative: a case study in Perso-Islamicate historiography

Waldman, Marilyn R.
"Professor Waldman challenges the prevailing practice in Islamicate historiography by undertaking a multifaceted analysis of a single text--a major historical narrative and a pivotal work in the history of new Persian language and literature since the tenth century: the Ghaznavid period's Ta'rīkh-i Bayhaqī ... Dr. Waldman is able to identify a wide range of phenomena that suggest the close relationship between historical narratives like the one under study and other literary narratives. She demonstrates that theories of narrative developed by literary critics can and should be expanded to account for historical narrative, and explores the potential utility of one critical approach--speech act theory ... Dr. Waldman calls for a dramatic reversal in the traditional ways in which historical narratives have been used by historians--not in order to curtail their function, as some critics would do, to merely confirming what hard evidence suggests--but rather so as to allow them to provide their abundant and unique information about hitherto unappreciated dimensions in the history of language, communication, ideas, and culture"--From book jacket.

The seleucid and hasmonean periods and the apocalyptic worldview

Lester L. Grabbe,Gabriele Boccaccini,Jason M. Zurawski
This tightly focused collection of essays, from an invited seminar of international specialists, centres on the question of the apocalyptic worldview around the time of the Maccabean revolt. What was the nature of apocalyptic at this time? Did the Maccabees themselves have a distinct apocalyptic worldview? These questions lead to other, more specific queries: who of the various groups held such a view? Certain of the essays analyse the characteristics of the apocalypses and related literature in this period, and whether the apocalyptic worldview itself gave rise to historical events or, at least, influenced them. The collection begins with two introductory essays. Both the main and short papers have individual responses, and two considered responses by well-known experts address the entire collection. The volume finishes with a concluding chapter by the lead editor that gives a perspective on the main themes and conclusions arising from the papers and discussion.

Music of the spheres and the dance of death: studies in musical iconology

Meyer-Baer, Kathi
The roots and evolution of two concepts usually thought to be Western in origin-musica mundana (the music of the spheres) and musica humana (music's relation to the human soul)-are explored. Beginning with a study of the early creeds of the Near East, Professor Meyer-Baer then traces their development in the works of Plato and the Gnostics, and in the art and literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Previous studies of symbolism in music have tended to focus on a single aspect of the problem. In this book the concepts of musica humana and musica mundane are related to philosophy, aesthetics, and the history of religion and are given a rightful place in the history of civilization.Originally published in 1970.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The cultural space of the arts and the infelicities of reductionism

Margolis, Joseph
Joseph Margolis, known for his considerable contributions to the philosophy of art and aesthetics, pragmatism, and American philosophy, has focused primarily on the troublesome concepts of culture, history, language, agency, art, interpretation, and the human person or self. For Margolis, the signal problem has always been the same: how can we distinguish between physical nature and human culture? How do these realms relate? The Cultural Space of the Arts and the Infelicities of Reductionism identifies a conceptual tendency that can be drawn from the work of the twentieth century's best-known analytic philosophers of art: Arthur Danto, Richard Wollheim, Kendall Walton, Nelson Goodman, Monroe Beardsley, No‘l Carroll, and Jerrold Levinson, among others. This trend threatens to impoverish our grasp and appreciation of the arts by failing to do justice to the culturally informed nature of the arts themselves. Through his analysis, Margolis sets out to retrieve an adequate picture of the essential differences between physical nature and human culture& mdash;particularly through language, history, meaning, significance, the emergence of the human self or person, and the essential features of human life& mdash;all to explain how such difference bears on our perception of paintings and literature. Clearly argued and provocatively engaging, Margolis's work reestablishes what is essential to a productive encounter with art.

Technical Advances in AIDS Research in the Human Nervous System

J.A. Levy,E.O. Major
It is remarkable that each month the quantity ofarticles published on AIDS still that address numbers in the thousands. The basic, clinical and sociological aspects this epidemic have been vigorously investigated, and equally as extensively reported in traditional as well as new journals. Therefore, what can the reader ofthis volume expect to find that is different from the information already found in the literature? The authors of this text met in October 1993 to discuss not only AIDS and its effects on the nervous system but also to address the problem from the point of view of the diverse technologies that are used in understanding the disease. Just as the recog nition ofoncogenic viruses gave us insights into cellular genes that govern growth, the study ofHIV-I in the nervous system has opened new areas ofinvestigation in the nervous system. Use of human fetal and glioma-derived cell cultures, discovery of toxins in the nervous system, release and damage of cytokines in the brain, the neuropathic effects of HIV proteins, the investigation of new treatment for neuro AIDS, and virus detection strategies to identify latent HIVI infection are described in this volume. Basic and clinical investigators from more than thirty laboratories around the world contributed to the ideas discussed at the meeting, "Technical Advances in AIDS Research in the Human Nervous System.

At no time: scenes and dialogues

Aichinger, Ilse
Zusammenfassung: "A member of the Gruppe 47 writers’ group which sought to renew German-language literature after World War II, Ilse Aichinger (1921–2016) achieved great acclaim as a writer of fiction, poetry, prose, and radio drama. The vignettes in At No Time each begin in recognizable situations, often set in Vienna or other Austrian cities, but immediately swerve into bizarre encounters, supernatural or fantastical situations. Precisely drawn yet disturbingly skewed, they are both naturalistic and disjointed, like the finest surrealist paintings. Created to be experienced on the page or on the radio rather than the stage, they echo the magic realism of her short stories. Even though they frequently take a dark turn, they remain full of humor, agility, and poetic freedom." -- From the publisher's website.
