Kronstadt 1921
In March 1921 the sailors of Kronstadt, the naval fortress in the Gulf of Finland, rose in revolt against the Bolshevik government, which they themselves had helped into power. Under the slogan of Òfree soviets,'' they established a revolutionary commune that survived for sixteen days, until an army came across the ice to crush it. After a savage struggle, the rebels were subdued. Paul Avrich vividly describes the uprising and examines it in the context of the development of the Soviet state.Originally published in 1970.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Tell Them Everything: A sojourn in the prison of Her Majesty Elizabeth II at Ard Macha (Armagh)
Irish artist and activist, Margaretta D’Arcy’s account of being jailed in the North of Ireland in 1980 for showing peaceful solidarity with the marginalised Republican women prisoners in Armagh jail and her courage in joining them on the no-wash protest against the removal of political status by the British government. When the book was first published, there was a regime of censorship both in Ireland and the UK around the war in the North and very few people wanted to be associated with it. But slowly, the ideas in the book, that the struggle of Republican women was aligned to the struggle of women everywhere for equality, filtered through, encouraging Sinn Fein to put its women members on a more equal footing. Today Sinn Fein in the Six-Counties is led by a woman. Tell Them Everything is a sharp observation of how the state deals with difficult women prisoners and how women adapt, resist and survive the horrendous experience of jail and of being separated from their children and families. But it is also an insightful and funny account of a privileged outsider thrust into a terrifying nightmare because of principle. This second edition of the classic feminist prison memoir comes with a preface by noted criminologist and Hillsborough campaigner, Professor Phil Scraton.
Dangerous Allies
We need the US for defence, but we only need defence because of the US Australia has always been reliant on 'great and powerful friends' for its sense of national security and for direction on its foreign policy-first on the British Empire and now on the United States. Australia has actively pursued a policy of strategic dependence, believing that making a grand bargain with a powerful ally was the best policy to ensure its security and prosperity. Dangerous Allies examines Australia's history of strategic dependence and questions the continuation of this position. It argues that international circumstances, in the world and in the Western Pacific especially, now make such a policy highly questionable. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States has also changed dramatically, making it less relevant to Australia and a less appropriate ally on which Australia should rely. Malcolm Fraser argues that Australia should adopt a much greater degree of independence in foreign policy, and that we should no longer merely follow other nations into wars of no direct interest to Australia or Australia's security. He argues for an end to strategic dependence and for the timely establishment of a truly independent Australia.
