City Lights pocket poets anthology

Lawrence Ferlinghetti
""Printer's ink is the greatest explosive."-Lawrence Ferlinghetti -- Lawrence Ferlinghetti founded the City Lights publishing house sixty years ago in 1955, launching the press with his now legendary Pocket Poets Series. First in the series was Pictures of the Gone World-the only book of his own poems that Ferlinghetti would ever publish at City Lights. Within a year, he had brought out two more volumes, translations by Kenneth Rexroth and then poems by Kenneth Patchen. But it was the success and scandal of number four, Howl & Other Poems by Allen Ginsberg (1956), that put City Lights on the map, positioning the Pocket Poets Series at the forefront of the literary counterculture.A landmark sixtieth anniversary retrospective, this edition is a must-have collection, an invaluable distillation of the energetic, iconoclastic, and still fresh body of work represented in the ongoing series. Ferlinghetti has selected a handful of poems from each of the sixty volumes, including the work of Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Andrei Voznesensky, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Julio Cortazar, Frank O'Hara, Marie Ponsot, Denise Levertov, Diane di Prima, Robert Duncan, Phillip Lamantia, Malcolm Lowry, and many more of the Pocket Poets Series innovative, influential, and often groundbreaking American and international poets. Strategy A History

Lawrence Freedman
Stratejinin özünde, kontrolümüzün dışındaki güçlerin kurbanı olmak yerine çevremizi şekillendirip çıkarımız doğrultusunda kullanıp kullanamayacağımız sorusu yatar. Şansa bağlı olaylara, tarafların çabalarına ve dostların yanlış adımlarına bağlı çevre stratejiyi zorlu kılan, ona dram katan unsurdur. Lawrence Freedman bu sürükleyici ve aydınlatıcı kitapta stratejik düşüncenin yaşamımızın her boyutuna nasıl sindiğini gösteriyor. Başlangıçtan itibaren Kutsal Kitap, eski Yunan mitleri, Sun Tzu ve Machievelli'ye stratejik düşüncenin sırlarını paylaşıyor. Askeri strateji bölümü ise okurları Carl von Clausewitz'in yazılarından 1950'lerin nükleer stratejistlerine götürüyor. Siyasi strateji analizimiz Marx'in devrim niteliğindeki siyaset analiziyle başlayıp Obama'nın başkanlık kampanyalarıyla son buluyor. - Philipp Bobbitt, The Shields of Achilles'in yazarı "Stratejik düşünmenin farklı bağlamlarda çağlar boyunca süren anlam, içerim ve etkileri üzerine müthiş bir grand tour." -Robert Jervis, Columbia Üniversitesi "Bu kitap Lawrence Freedman'ın strateji üzerine dünyanın önde gelen düşünürlerinden olduğunu bir kez daha kanıtlıyor.." - Joseph S. Nye, Jr., Harvard Üniversitesi, The Future of Power'ın yazarı

A universe from nothing: why there is something rather than nothing

Krauss, Lawrence Maxwell
“WHERE DID THE UNIVERSE COME FROM? WHAT WAS THERE BEFORE IT? WHAT WILL THE FUTURE BRING? AND FINALLY, WHY IS THERE SOMETHING RATHER THAN NOTHING?” Lawrence Krauss’s provocative answers to these and other timeless questions in a wildly popular lecture now on YouTube have attracted almost a million viewers. The last of these questions in particular has been at the center of religious and philosophical debates about the existence of God, and it’s the supposed counterargument to anyone who questions the need for God. As Krauss argues, scientists have, however, historically focused on other, more pressing issues—such as figuring out how the universe actually functions, which can ultimately help us to improve the quality of our lives. Now, in a cosmological story that rivets as it enlightens, pioneering theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss explains the groundbreaking new scientific advances that turn the most basic philosophical questions on their heads. One of the few prominent scientists today to have actively crossed the chasm between science and popular culture, Krauss reveals that modern science is addressing the question of why there is something rather than nothing, with surprising and fascinating results. The staggeringly beautiful experimental observations and mind-bending new theories are all described accessibly in A Universe from Nothing, and they suggest that not only can something arise from nothing, something will always arise from nothing. With his characteristic wry humor and wonderfully clear explanations, Krauss takes us back to the beginning of the beginning , presenting the most recent evidence for how our universe evolved—and the implications for how it’s going to end. It will provoke, challenge, and delight readers as it looks at the most basic underpinnings of existence in a whole new way. And this knowledge that our universe will be quite different in the future from today has profound implications and directly affects how we live in the present. As Richard Dawkins has described it: This could potentially be the most important scientific book with implications for supernaturalism since Darwin. A fascinating antidote to outmoded philosophical and religious thinking, A Universe from Nothing is a provocative, game-changing entry into the debate about the existence of God and everything that exists. “Forget Jesus,” Krauss has argued, “the stars died so you could be born.”

Mr. Wilson's cabinet of wonder

Weschler, Lawrence
"Pronged ants, horned humans, a landscape carved on a fruit pit--some of the displays in David Wilson's Museum of Jurassic Technology are hoaxes. But which ones? As he guides readers through an intellectual hall of mirrors, Lawrence Weschler revisits the 16th-century "wonder cabinets" that were the first museums and compels readers to examine the imaginative origins of both art and science"

The person and the situation: perspectives of social psychology

Ross, Lee,Nisbett, Richard E.
A new edition of the classic 1991 social psychology text, with a new foreword by Malcolm Gladwell. How does the situation we're in influence the way we behave and think? Professors Ross and Nisbett eloquently argue that the context we find ourselves in substantially affects our behavior. The Person and the Situation explores the complex ideas about personal versus situational determinants of behavior and relates the lessons of our discipline to important political, social, and even philosophical issues. This its the type of book that we have long wished we had available to assign to the serious, critical student who asks, What have we really learned from social psychology? "We offer this book as a kind of throwback to a golden age and as a tribute to our intellectual forebears. We offer it as a 'stand tall and be proud' pep talk for our colleagues in general and for our younger colleagues in particular. We offer it as an olive branch and invitation to more fruitful intellectual dialogue with our friends in personality research (and also to our friends in anthropology and sociology who cluck, with some justification, about our parochialism). We offer it as a slim guide for non-psychologists to the heart and muscle of our enterprise. And last, but not least, we offer it as an invitation to honor the great tradition of Kurt Lewin that links basic theory first to the analysis of socially significant real-world phenomena and ultimately to the task of effective social innovation." Lee Ross & Richard Nisbett. With a new foreword by Malcolm Gladwell, and a new afterword by the authors, this timely reissue of one of social psychology's classic texts is essential reading for anyone with an interest in human behavior.--Publisher's description

Famesick: a memoir

Dunham, Lena
"For the last decade, as she's spent countless hours in doctor's waiting rooms searching for diagnoses, treatments, and relief, being the owner and operator of Lena Dunham's body has felt, as she puts it, 'like towing a wrecked car across town at midnight.' It's not easy dragging a wrecked car anywhere, much less to the Met Gala while sewn into a gold lamé corset. Or to the set of the hit show that you--as a twenty-five-year-old--are writing, directing, producing, and starring in. Or to the White House, the Golden Globes, or your publicist's office to discuss the latest Internet disaster. But Dunham does it--even if it means interminable hospital stays, vomiting in the bathroom when she's meant to be meeting Oprah, or terrifying those closest to her--because she can no longer tell the difference between fighting to do what she loves and being a servant to her own ambition. All the while, she is holding out for a love that can withstand her personal and public challenges and, more than anything, yearning to feel like herself again--if only she could remember who that self was. As Dunham takes us through her journey, tracking her rise to fame--from selling the pilot of Girls to the present--in three acts, it becomes clear that the spotlight casts long shadows, distorting the relationships she once held dear and isolating everyone in its glare. When an endless supply of drugs can't protect you from pain--and begins to control your every move--being famous doesn't stand a chance against the darker corners of the human experience. In Famesick, Dunham asks herself what the cost of fulfilling her dreams has really been, and whether it was worth it. What she finds is deeper than physical relief, and more lasting, as she learns to live with what she can't change and turn her regrets into wisdom that can carry her forward, as she reconnects to what, and who, she loves."--

Free-range kids: giving our children the freedom we had without going nuts with worry

Skenazy, Lenore
FREE RANGE KIDS has become a national movement, sparked by the incredible response to Lenore Skenazy?s piece about allowing her 9-year-old ride the subway alone in NYC. Parent groups argued about it, bloggers, blogged, spouses became uncivil with each other, and the media jumped all over it. A lot of parents today, Skenazy says, see no difference between letting their kids walk to school and letting them walk through a firing range. Any risk is seen as too much risk. But if you try to prevent every possible danger or difficult in your child?s everyday life, that child never gets a chance to grow up. We parents have to realize that the greatest risk of all just might be trying to raise a child who never encounters choice or independence.

Peeping tom

Marks, Leo
Peeping Tom tells the story of a film cameraman who kills prostitutes by impaling them with the sharp point of his camera. The pleasure he gets from the murders comes from filming his victims as they die. At the time it was seen as a horror film, now it is considered as a powerful demonstration of both the victimisation of women under the male gaze, and of the voyeurism inherent in cinema. It is also a film of dark, unsettling humour. Peeping Tom destroyed Michael Powell's career in the wake of the howls of outrage that greeted the film. Now it is seen as one of his most completely realized works.

On Tyranny An Interpretation of Xenophon's Hiero

Leo Strauss
2015 Reprint of 1948 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "On Tyranny" is Leo Strauss's classic reading of Xenophon's dialogue "Hiero," or "Tyrannicus," in which the tyrant Hiero and the poet Simonides discuss the advantages and disadvantages of exercising tyranny. Strauss taught that liberalism in its modern form contained within it an intrinsic tendency towards extreme relativism, which in turn led to two types of nihilism. The first was a "brutal" nihilism, expressed in Nazi and Marxist regimes. In "On Tyranny," he wrote that these ideologies, both descendants of Enlightenment thought, tried to destroy all traditions, history, ethics, and moral standards and replace them by force under which nature and mankind are subjugated and conquered. The second type-the "gentle" nihilism expressed in Western liberal democracies-was a kind of value-free aimlessness and a hedonistic "permissive egalitarianism", which he saw as permeating the fabric of contemporary American society. In the belief that 20th century relativism, scientism, historicism, and nihilism were all implicated in the deterioration of modern society and philosophy, Strauss sought to uncover the philosophical pathways that had led to this situation. The resultant study led him to advocate a tentative return to classical political philosophy as a starting point for judging political action. "On Tyranny is a complex and stimulating book with its 'parallel dialogue' made all the more striking since both participants take such unusual, highly provocative positions and so force readers to face substantial problems in what are often wholly unfamiliar, even shocking ways." --Robert Pippin History and Theory

The Nuremberg interviews: an American psychiatrist's conversations with the defendants and witnesses

Goldensohn, Leon
Goldensohn was the prison psychiatrist at Nuremberg from January to June 1946. He conducted interviews with the 21 prisoners there at the time, as well as with defense and prosecution witnesses. His accounts of these talks were preserved in notebooks and have never been published before. The book is divided into two sections: "Defendants" (19 interviews) and "Witnesses" (14 interviews). The texts reveal much about the mentality and motives of the Nazi leaders. The interviewees discuss Hitler and various aspects of Nazism. While their remarks are sometimes self-serving (e.g. denials of being antisemitic), they often disclose prejudice and other aspects of the psychology of Nazism. The antisemitism of the defendants is disclosed in the interviews with Göring and Streicher. Persecution of Jews is discussed in interviews with witnesses: Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz; Rudolf Mildner, the Nazi leader in Denmark; and Otto Ohlendorf, the commander of Einsatzgruppe D. Pp. vii-xxix contain the introduction by Robert Gellately.
