Politics in independent Poland 1921-1939: the crisis of constitutional government

Polonsky, Antony
This book is an account of Polish political life from the end of the Polish-Soviet war to the defeat of Poland by Nazi Germany, set against the social and economic background of the new state. It describes, above all, the failure of the highly democratic constitution adopted in March 1921 and its replacement by the semi-autocratic regime of Marshal Pilsudski, a regime which became steadily more authoritarian, particularly after the death of the Marshal in May 1935. Considerable attention has been devoted to foreign policy and to the place of Poland in European politics at the time. The book should thus prove of interest not only to East European specialists, but to all those interested in the history of the interwar years.

England and Europe in the sixteenth century

Doran, Susan
This is a thematic survey of English foreign policy in the 16th century, focusing on the influence of the concept of honour, security concerns, religious ideology and commercial interests on the making of policy. It draws attention to aspects of continuity with the late medieval past but argues, too, that the European Reformation brought new challenges which forced a rethinking of policy. Far from treating the 16th century as the period when England began its rise as a Great Power, the author emphasizes the structural weaknesses of the English armed forces and demonstrates that dangers and insecurities did more to mould foreign policy than the energy and confidence of the Tudor rulers.

Jahre Der Entscheidung

Oswald Spengler

The Rulers of Belgian Africa, 1884-1914

Lewis Henry Gann
In this comprehensive picture of Belgian colonialism in the Congo, Lewis Gann and Peter Duignan trace the formation of the colonial state that became Zaire, considering it in the light of colonial experience in other African territories. Whereas most studies have focused on the conquest and subjugation of the African population, this study probes the colonial apparatus itself, investigating the attitudes and behavior of the civil servants and soldiers who built the empire. Franz Baermann Steiner: a stranger in the world

Adler, Jeremy D.,Fardon, Richard
"Franz Baermann Steiner (1909-52) provided the vital link between the intellectual culture of central Europe and the Oxford Institute of Anthropology in its post-Second World War years. This book demonstrates his quiet influence within anthropology, which has extended from Mary Douglas to David Graeber, and how his remarkable poetry reflected profoundly on the slavery and murder of the Shoah, an event which he escaped from. Steiner's concerns including inter-disciplinarity, genre, refugees and exile, colonialism and violence, and the sources of European anthropology speak to contemporary concerns more directly now than at any time since his early death"--
