Heine's Jewish comedy: a study of his portraits of Jews and Judaism

Prawer, Siegbert Salomon
"Thoroughly readable....A fascinating introduction to the world of the Jew in 19th-century Europe, viewed through the eyes of a brilliant and perceptive artist."--AB Bookman's Weekly. "A first-rate eye-opener, a fascinating compendium of the profound struggle toward a more integrated humanity."--Choice. The work of the great 19th-century German poet Heine is rich with verbal portraits of men and women, real and imaginary, contemporary and historical, ranging from Karl Marx and the Rothschilds to Spinoza and characters from the Bible. Drawing on material only recently made available, as well as letters and recorded conversations, Prawer has produced a work which is at once a study of the technique of literary portraiture, and a panorama of the Jewish world throughout the ages.

Option Three A Novel about the University

Joel Shatzky
"When Acting Visiting Assistant Professor L. Circassian is fired and rehired in the same week (with a 35 percent pay cut), he is only at the beginning of a cycle of abuse and professional debasement at the university. Joel Shatzky has created an hilarious novel about the corporatization of higher education - a book filled with blowhard deans, corrupt politicians, grasping CEOs, inept union officials, inappropriately dressed students, and scholars in donkey ears. "Option Three is an imaginative, funny and sometimes all too realistic account of life in today's colleges and universities."--Amazon.com

Sefer ha-pardes

Jedaiah ben Abraham Bedersi
This groundbreaking new work is the first full critical edition and English translation of the Hebrew book Sefer ha-Pardes [The Book of the Orchard], written at the end of the thirteenth century by the Provençal Jewish author Jedaiah ha-Penini. It is purportedly an example of musar: a compilation of wise epigrams and meshalim [parables] that teach moral lessons on different topics, such as the service of God, friendship, the deceitfulness of the world, medicine, logic, music, magic, and poetry. However, it is in reality a compendium of sayings that reveal the author's personal views and feelings on a variety of religious topics, secular sciences, and their practitioners. David Torollo presents a fluent and illuminating English-Hebrew parallel text based on four sixteenth-century witnesses: three manuscripts and a printed edition. A rigorous study accompanies and contextualises the Hebrew work, exploring Sefer ha-Pardes's transmission and reception in different places over time; its structure and content; its place in the intellectual environment and literary tradition of Provence; and possible lines of enquiry for future research. This essential new work offers a significant contribution to scholarship in the field of Medieval Hebrew Hispano-Provencal literature.
