Until "the final solution": the Jews in Belgrade 1521-1942

Lebl, Ženi
Pp. 264-338 discuss the Holocaust period, beginning with anti-Jewish laws in Yugoslavia restricting Jewish economic activity, as well as a numerus clausus, in October 1940. Notes that these laws were passed under German pressure, that protests made by the Jewish leadership were to no avail, and that many Jews thereafter converted. With the German occupation and division of Yugoslavia in April 1941, the Nazis took over control of Belgrade and instituted further anti-Jewish measures. During fall 1941 all Jewish men were arrested; they were sent to nearby labor camps, and many were killed. In December all of the remaining Jews, mostly women and children, were interned at Sajmište, and during spring 1942 they were killed in a gassing truck. Provides details concerning the Final Solution in Belgrade, which was carried out with the collaboration of local authorities and police. Estimates that 94% of the ca. 11,870 Jews living there in 1941 were killed. Only a few of the Nazi perpetrators were tried and sentenced in Yugoslavia after the war; the others either fled or returned to Germany, where some received light sentences.

Spinoza's political treatise: a critical guide

Yitzhak Y. Melamed,Hasana Sharp
Spinoza's 'Political treatise' constitutes the very last stage in the development of his thought, as he left the manuscript incomplete at the time of his death in 1677. On several crucial issues - for example, the new conception of the 'free multitude' - the work goes well beyond his 'Theological political treatise' (1670), and arguably presents ideas that were not fully developed even in his 'Ethics'. This volume of newly commissioned essays on the 'Political treatise' is the first collection in English to be dedicated specifically to the work, ranging over topics including political explanation, national religion, the civil state, vengeance, aristocratic government, and political luck. It will be a major resource for scholars who are interested in this important but still neglected work, and in Spinoza's political philosophy more generally

Jewish women in Greco-Roman Palestine: by Tal Ilan

Ilan, Tal
This study explores the real - as against the ideal - social, political, and religious status of women in Palestinian Judaism of Hellenistic and Roman periods. This investigation concludes that extreme religious groups in Judaism of the period influences other groups, classes, and factions to tighten their control of women. They also encouraged an understanding of ideal relationships between men and women, represented in the literature and the legal codes of the time that required increasing chastity. Despite this, the lives of real women and their relationships to men continued to be varied and nuances. This book integrates both Jewish and Early Christian sources together with a feminist critique. It is the most comprehensive work of this sort published thus far and offers a vast repository of relevant material, as well as a fresh interpretation.
