Quantum mechanics from general relativity: an approximation for a theory of inertia

Sachs, Mendel
This monograph is a sequel to my earlier work, General Relativity and Matter [1], which will be referred to henceforth as GRM. The monograph, GRM, focuses on the full set of implications of General Relativity Theory, as a fundamental theory of matter in all domains, from elementary particle physics to cosmology. It is shown there to exhibit an explicit unification of the gravitational and electromagnetic fields of force with the inertial manifestations of matter, expressing the latter explicitly in terms of a covariant field theory within the structure of this general theory. This monograph will focus, primarily, on the special relativistic limit of the part of this general field theory of matter that deals with inertia, in the domain where quantum mechanics has been evoked in contemporary physics as a funda mental explanation for the behavior of elementary matter. Many of the results presented in this book are based on earlier published works in the journals, which will be listed in the Bibliography. These results will be presented here in an expanded form, with more discussion on the motivation and explanation for the theoretical development of the subject than space would allow in normal journal articles, and they will be presented in one place where there would then be a more unified and coherent explication of the subject.

Introduction to Bose-Einstein correlations and subatomic interferometry

Weiner, Richard M.
The first textbook on Bose-Einstein correlations and their applications, an interdisciplinary topic bridging particle physics and quantum physics, and currently the centre of considerable interest in high energy physics. Besides its fundamental importance for particle physics, this phenomenon constitutes the main tool for the determination of sizes and lifetimes of particle sources. The contents of this book are divided into the following chapters, each of which concludes with exercises designed to test the reader's understanding of the concepts and theories included therein: The Foundations; Hadron Interferometry; Currents; Sources; Applications to Ultrarelativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions; Correlations and Multiplicity Distributions; Photos versus Hadrons. It provides the first systematic analysis and comparison of the different theoretical approaches to the subject and will be invaluable to theorists and experimentalists in particle and nuclear physics, quantum optics and astrophysics.

A Short Textbook of Physics Not Involving the Use of Higher Mathematics

Wilhelm H. Westphal
This book is a translation of the 6th to 8th edition of the author's Kleines Lehrbuch der Physik. The circle of readers to which it hopes to appeal and the author's purpose in writing it have been set out in the Preface to the first German edition, published in 1948. The present book consistently follows the principles of the theory of quantities, the beginnings of which date back to James C. Maxwell. This means that in all equations in this book the symbols invariably stand for physical quantities and not for the numerical values of quantities. Only then are the equations gene rally valid and independent of the choice of units used in their evaluation. The units used are always the "metric" units which have been gaining ground increasingly also in the English-speaking countries. A conversion table for some of the more important Anglo-American units is given on page XIV. I would like to record my sincere gratitude to Mr. Ewald Osers for his pains taking work in making this translation and to Mr. P. C. Banbury, Ph. D., of the Department of Physics, University of Reading, England, both for the advice he has given hirn throughout and for devising the problems specially for this edition.

Analogies in physics and life: a scientific autobiography

Weiner, Richard M.
Analogies play a fundamental role in science. To understand how and why, at a given moment, a certain analogy was used, one has to know the specific, historical circumstances under which the new idea was developed. This historical background is never presented in scientific articles and quite rarely in books. For the general reader, the undergraduate or graduate student who learns the subject for the first time, but also for the practitioner who looks for inspiration or who wants to understand what his colleague working in another field does, these historical circumstances can be fascinating and useful. This book discusses a series of analogy effects in subatomic physics, the prediction and theory of which the author has contributed to in the last 50 years. These phenomena are presented at a level accessible to the non-specialist, without formulae but with emphasis on the personal and historical background: memoirs of meetings, discussions and correspondence with collaborators and colleagues. As such, besides its scientific aspects, the book constitutes an absorbing witness account of a holocaust survivor who subsequently illegally crossed the Iron Curtain to escape communist persecution.

Physikalisches Praktikum: Eine Sammlung Von UEbungsaufgaben Mit Einer Einfuhrung in Die Grundlagen Des Physikalischen Messens

Westphal, Wilhelm H
A. Gro8en- und Einheitensysteme Westphal, Physik, 25./26. Auf!., §§ 2, 3; ferner: Die Grundlagen des physikalismen Begriffssystems. 1.

Dramatic Effect of Cross-correlations in Random Vibrations of Discrete Systems, Beams, Plates, and Shells

Isaac Elishakoff
This volume explains the dramatic effect of cross-correlations in forming the structural response of aircraft in turbulent excitation, ships in rough seas, cars on irregular roads, and other dynamic regimes. It brings into sharp focus the dramatic effect of cross correlations often neglected due to the analytical difficulty of their evaluation. Veteran author Professor Isaac Elishakoff illustrates how neglect of cross correlations could result in underestimation of the response by tens or hundreds of percentages the effect of the random vibrations of structures' main elements, including beams, plates, and shells. Clarifies the common misconception that natural frequencies of structures are well apart from each other; Illustrates that the interaction of associated modes in plates can dramatically alter the random response due to presence of coinciding frequencies; Demonstrates that natural frequencies in beams on elastic foundation, as well as cylindrical or spherical shells, might cluster together resulting in substantial percentage error if cross-correlations are ignored.

Walter Gilbert: Selected Works

Walter Gilbert
This book commemorates the eclectic intellectual life of scientist and artist Walter Gilbert. It presents all of his most influential works throughout his scientific career. His scientific explorations covered a broad spectrum of fields: theoretical physics; molecular biology, from finding messenger RNA to elucidating the regulation of the lac operon to understanding DNA replication; gene evolution and origin of life; genomics; bioinformatics; and beyond. He created widely used concepts such as 'Exon', 'Intron' and 'RNA World'. Eleven reflective essays by Gilbert are included for the first time, discussing both his scientific studies and anecdotes from his own life. These firsthand accounts record the historical and intellectual contexts for his most monumental scientific discoveries, including his Nobel Prize-winning sequencing method. Memorial chapters, contributed by Gilbert Laboratory alumni, describe the passion, ambition, and efforts of Gilbert and several generations of young scientists under his leadership. Finally, the book collects a few fine pieces of artwork created by Gilbert in recent years. It documents a life of genius and creativity that could inspire others for years to come.

Electron optics

Klemperer, O.
The third edition of Dr Klemperer's Electron Optics was published in 1971. It is concerned primarily with the experimental aspects of electron optics. It introduces the student to a specialized topic, and summarizes the basic principles and essential data related to the subject. With the assistance of Dr Barnett, this third edition discusses methods of trajectory tracing by digital computer and the optics of quadrupole lenses. Practical applications of electron optics have been used to illustrate the principles under discussion. The book will be of interest to any scholar of general physics, geometrical optics or electron physics. The extensive bibliography lists the more important original literature and provides a guide to further reading.

Biological coherence and response to external stimuli

FROHLICH, HERBERT ED.
The existence of coherent excitations in active biological systems has been established in recent years. The present book aims at presenting a survey on the many features that such ex citations can exhibit. This does not mean that a "theory of biology" has been established but it implies that such a theory will make use of such excitations. It is hoped that the present book will help in this direction. The Constitution of Matter Modern Atomic and Electron Theories

Max Born
Excerpt from The Constitution of Matter Modern Atomic and Electron Theories It would also be out of place, since A. Sommerfeld has recently published a book, "Atomic Structure and Spectral Lines," translated by H. L. Brose (Methuen Co. & Ltd.), which deals comprehensively, yet simply, with the recent advances in the physical atomic theory. These essays are for those who have not time to. study the larger work of Sommerfeld. M. Born Frankfurt A.M., 20th April, 1920 Preface To The Second Edition The form of these essays precludes any extensive alterations. I have therefore had to confine myself to incorporating the most important of the recent advances, particularly Aston's work on isotopy in ordinary elements, Franck's spectroscopic determination of the electron-affinities of halogen atoms, and Knipping's measurements of the ionisation-energies of the hydrogen halides. For the rest I have only made minor alterations and additions to the references. Dr. R. Minkowski has kindly assisted me in reading the proofs. Bose-Einstein correlations in particle and nuclear physics: a collection of reprints

Weiner, Richard M.
Intensity interferometry, and Bose?Einstein Correlations in particular, at present constitutes the only experimental method for the determination of sizes and lifetimes of sources in particle and nuclear physics. The measurement of these is essential for an understanding of the dynamics of strong interactions which are responsible for the existence and properties of atomic nuclei. Bose?Einstein Correlations in Particle and Nuclear Physics is a collection of 47 previously published papers which have been chosen not only for their historical significance but for their important and so far lasting contribution to this subject. They appear in chronological order and are preceded by comments from the editor as to their importance and relevance to the field today. Bose?Einstein Correlations in Particle and Nuclear Physics is an invaluable and unique reference source for researchers, lecturers and graduate students at both universities and research institutes. Advance praise for this volume includes: ?This comprehensive reprint collection, compiled and introduced by Professor Richard Weiner, surveys both experimental and theoretical papers in the field of Bose?Einstein Correlations. The material included should prove invaluable to any worker or student entering the field. As noted by Professor Weiner, Bose?Einstein Correlations may be the most important step towards finding the "holy grail" of a quark-gluon plasma.? ? Theory of Functionals: And of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations

Volterra, Vito,Fantappiè, Luigi
"Theory of Functionals: And of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations" is a foundational treatise in the field of mathematical analysis, representing the culmination of Vito Volterra's pioneering research into the calculus of variations and the generalization of functions. As one of the most significant figures in late 19th and early 20th-century mathematics, Volterra introduces a systematic approach to functionals-functions that depend on other functions-providing a rigorous framework for what is now known as functional analysis. The work explores the properties of integral and integro-differential equations, detailing their development and their profound implications for both pure mathematics and mathematical physics. Volterra examines the transition from finite-dimensional space to infinite-dimensional space, offering insights into the behavior of systems where the current state depends on past history. Edited and expanded from his influential lectures, this volume serves as an essential resource for understanding the historical development of modern analysis. It remains a vital reference for mathematicians and physicists interested in the evolution of linear operators and the mathematical modeling of complex physical phenomena.
