Justice behind the Iron Curtain: Nazis on trial in communist Poland

Finder, Gabriel N.,Prusin, Alexander Victor
"In Justice behind the Iron Curtain, Gabriel N. Finder and Alexander V. Prusin examine Poland's role in prosecuting Nazi German criminals during the first decade and a half of the postwar era. Finder and Prusin contend that the Polish trials of Nazi war criminals were a pragmatic political response to postwar Polish society and Poles' cravings for vengeance against German Nazis. Although characterized by numerous inconsistencies, Poland's prosecutions of Nazis exhibited a fair degree of due process and resembled similar proceedings in Western democratic counties. The authors examine reactions to the trials among Poles and Jews. Although Polish-Jewish relations were uneasy in the wake of the extremely brutal German wartime occupation of Poland, postwar Polish prosecutions of German Nazis placed emphasis on the fate of Jews during the Holocaust. Justice behind the Iron Curtain is the first work to approach communist Poland's judicial postwar confrontation with the legacy of the Nazi occupation"--Publisher's description

Lev Vygotsky: revolutionary scientist

Newman, Fred,Holzman, Lois
When Lev Vygotsky: Revolutionary Scientist published, it was unique in several ways. It presented Vygotsky as a Marxist methodologist, both locating him in his historical period and delineating how his life and writings have been a catalyst for a contemporary revolutionary, practical-critical, psychology. It highlighted Vygotsky's unconventional view of how development and learning are related and, in doing so, brought human development into prominence. It introduced important linkages between Vygotsky's views on thinking and speaking and those of Wittgenstein, drawing implications for language acquisition and language learning. And it drew attention to Vygotsky's understanding of the role of play in child development, and expanded on the significance of play throughout the lifespan. In these ways, this classic text presented a more expansive Vygotsky than previously understood. The Introduction to this Classic Edition will summarize what has transpired in the years since Lev Vygotsky first published. It will answer who and where is Vygotsky now? What place does he have in scholarship in psychology, education, and other fields? How are practitioners making use of him-to address the challenges of our times, solve seemingly intractable social problems, revolutionize psychology, and develop skilled and worldly citizens? What have the authors accomplished since they first articulated their view of Vygotsky as a revolutionary scientist?.

Michelangelo's design principles, particularly in relation to those of Raphael

Panofsky, Erwin
Abstract: "In June 2012, an early manuscript by renowned art historian Erwin Panofsky was discovered in a vault in a government building in Munich. The manuscript was quickly identified as Panofsky's habilitationsschrift on Michelangelo, a long-missing and legendary document that certified Panofsky to lead university courses, and about which scholars had speculated for decades. The manuscript's origins date back to late spring of 1920 (and was completed when its author was twenty-eight), but in 1933, Panofsky was forced to flee Nazi Germany without being able to go through his office or papers. The manuscript disappeared in the years leading up to World War II and was thought destroyed in the fire-bombing of Hamburg. Following his emigration to the United States in 1934, Panofsky joined the faculty of the newly-formed Institute for Advanced Study, and went on to author a dozen books, including three with Princeton University Press.

Political Thought in Medieval Islam An Introductory Outline

Erwin I. J. Rosenthal
Muhammad founded a World-State as well as a faith; as Islam spread from its first centres, Muslim political thinkers had to apply the divinely revealed law of the Prophet to new circumstances. They had to relate new realities of power and authority to the ideal constitution which he had laid down and which his immediate successors had elaborated. Against this background Dr Rosenthal discusses the later Muslim philosophers who were influenced by the political thought of Plato and Aristotle. He shows how Greek thought modified the Islamic and yet was always subordinated to Muslim categories of thought and political needs. Dr Rosenthal thus surveys the chief traditions of Islamic political thought from the eighth to the end of the fifteenth centuries. He emphasises the basic unity given by the shared faith of the writers, without diminishing the individuality of each. Orientalists will welcome the book; so will historians of the medieval West, for it shows them the religious, political and intellectual positions underlying the expansion of Islam.
