FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS by Walter Rudin

Walter Rudins
Functional analysis is the study of certain topological-algebraic structures and of the methods by which knowledge of these structures can be applied to analytic problems. A good introductory text on this subject should include a presentation of its axiomatics (i.e., of the general theory of topological vector spaces), it should treat at least a few topics in some depth, and it should contain some interesting applications to other branches of mathematics. I hope that the present book meets these criteria. The subject is huge and is growing rapidly. (The bibliography in volume I of [4] contains 96 pages and goes only to 1957.) In order to write a book of moderate size, it was therefore necessary to select certain areas and to ignore others. I fully realize that almost any expert who looks at the table of contents will find that some of his or her (and my) favorite topics are missing, but this seems unavoidable. It was not my intention to write an encyclopedic treatise. I wanted to write a book that would open the way to further exploration. This is the reason for omitting many of the more esoteric topics that might have been included in the presentation of the general theory of topo-logical vector spaces. For instance, there is no discussion of uniform spaces, of Moore-Smith convergence, of nets, or of filters. The notion of complete-ness occurs only in the context of metric spaces. Bornological spaces are not mentioned, nor are barreled ones. Duality is of course presented, but not in its utmost generality. Integration of vector-valued functions is treated strictly as a tool; attention is confined to continuous integrands, with values in a Frechet space. Nevertheless, the material of Part I is fully adequate for almost all applications to concrete problems. And this is what ought to be stressed in such a course:

The war of the roses

Adler, Warren
"Jonathan and Barbara Rose are the perfect couple, living the dream in their beautiful house, filled with their precious antiques, their darling children, and their prized Ferrari in the garage. It's all any red-blooded American could possibly want. But when Jonathan experiences a sudden heart attack (or so he thinks) Barbara realizes that she wants a new life, without him. There's just one problem: they both want the house. For husband and wife, it's not just a residence: it's a passion, one that will escalate an ugly divorce into a full-blown battlefield, complete with weapons and casualties. In this viciously black comedy, the Roses will each do whatever they can to destroy their better half--no matter the cost to themselves..." -- Provided by publisher.

Anti-pluralism: the populist threat to liberal democracy

Galston, William A.
The Great Recession, institutional dysfunction, a growing divide between urban and rural prospects, and failed efforts to effectively address immigration have paved the way for a populist backlash that disrupts the postwar bargain between political elites and citizens. Whether today's populism represents a corrective to unfair and obsolete policies or a threat to liberal democracy itself remains up for debate. Yet this much is clear: these challenges indict the triumphalism that accompanied liberal democratic consolidation after the collapse of the Soviet Union. To respond to today's crisis, good leaders must strive for inclusive economic growth while addressing fraught social and cultural issues, including demographic anxiety, with frank attention. Although reforms may stem the populist tide, liberal democratic life will always leave some citizens unsatisfied. This is a permanent source of vulnerability, but liberal democracy will endure so long as citizens believe it is worth fighting for.

America's deadliest export: democracy : the truth about US foreign policy and everything else

Blum, William

In this startling and provocative book, William Blum, a leading dissident chronicler of US foreign policy and the author of controversial bestseller Rogue State, argues that nothing could be further from the truth. Moreover, until people understand fully the worldwide suffering American policy has caused, we will never be able to stop the monster.

The death of the artist: how creators are struggling to survive in the age of billionaires and big tech

Deresiewicz, William
"Over the last twenty years, art has become more accessible than ever before. A painter can post their latest creation on Instagram and wait as the likes pile up; a budding filmmaker can shoot a clip on their iPhone, then upload it to YouTube for thousands to view. The digital landscape has fundamentally altered what it means to be creative, as well as how consumers interact with artistic production both economically and curatorially. William Deresiewicz, a leading critic of contemporary culture in America, argues that we are in the midst of an epochal transformation within art. Whereas the nineteenth century considered artists to be craftsmen and the twentieth century treated them as professionals, artists today are uniquely dependent upon themselves. The internet, along with decreases in art funding and the growing prevalence of gig economies, has forced artists to become responsible for every aspect of their work, from conception to promotion, from sales to legacy. In The Death of the Artist, Deresiewicz profiles those struggling to make a living through the arts, from the twenty-something college novelist with a multi-hyphenated job title to the midlife painter who must utilize social media to stay relevant. Deresiewicz shows what the birth of the "creative entrepreneur" signifies about our evolving society at large and what might be done to keep artists thriving, because we need them"--

Language in the inner city: studies in the Black English vernacular

Labov, William
"Language in the Inner City firmly establishes African American Vernacular English not simply as slang but as a well-formed set of rules of pronunciation and grammar capable of conveying complex logic and reasoning. Studying not only the normal processes of communication in the inner city but such art forms as the ritual insult and ritualized narrative, Labov confirms the Black vernacular as a separate and independent dialect of English. His analysis goes on to clarify the nature and processes of linguistic change in the context of a changing society"--Jacket.

When Everybody Wore a Hat

William Steig
