Palestine in Israeli school books: ideology and propaganda in education

Peled-Elhanan, Nurit
"Each year, Israel's young men and women are drafted into compulsory military service and are required to engage directly in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This conflict is by its nature intensely complex and is played out under the full glare of international security. So, how does Israel's education system prepare its young people for this? How is Palestine, and the Palestinians against whom these young Israelis will potentially be required to use force, portrayed in the school system? Nurit Peled-Elhanan argues that the textbooks used in the school system are laced with a pro-Israel ideology, and that they play a part in priming Israeli children for military service. She analyzes the presentation of images, maps, layouts and use of language in History, Geography and Civic Studies textbooks, and reveals how the books might be seen to marginalize Palestinians, legitimize Israeli military action and reinforce Jewish-Israeli territorial identity. This book provides a fresh scholarly contribution to the Israeli-Palestinian debate, and will be relevant to the fields of Middle East Studies and Politics more widely"--Publisher.

Reinventing Education Entrepreneurship in America's Public Schools

Louis V. Gerstner
Entrepreneurship in schools means bypassing elephantine bureaucracies to focus on the place where the educational product is actually delivered: the school. In Boston a school offers evening classes to students who have to work days: one in Georgia intimately involves parents in their children's classwork: in the Bronx a dedicated principal has to keep his innovations a secret from the central board of education. We see how schools can make themselves part of the computer revolution, how they can free themselves of the tyranny of the traditional school year, how educators can be held responsible for their failures and be properly rewarded for their successes. Above all, we see proof positive of how hope can be born where none now seems to exist, how learning can take place where there is now an educational wasteland, how the children who are our nation's future can gain the tools that make that future strong and bright.

Reading and Loving

Leila Berg
Originally published in 1977. Learning to read is probably the central educational achievement of any child's life. It is also a central concern for parents and teachers. Leila Berg, known for her work in children's literature, believes that the enjoyment of books and the acquisition of reading and writing is not primarily an academic or a technical skill, but grows from a warmly physical and emotional base of shared enjoyment with another human being. This book traces the varied ways that babies learn to communicate, and discusses the place of books in the lives of different groups in the community. It examines the types of books used in school, and demonstrates that, in many cases, books themselves provide the major inhibition to the development of reading through their stilted and often formalistic vocabulary. The author's aim is that all children's first experience of reading should be a loving and sensuous one, so that they can come to discover the power of books themselves.

Biblical Excavations Volume 2: First Fruits: A Thanksgiving Study & My Book Of Hebrew Letters

Nekrutman, David
Biblical Excavations Volume 2 First Fruits: A Thanksgiving Study First Fruits: A Thanksgiving Study excavates a simple instruction from Deuteronomy 26, illuminating the story within. Words studies, mini-research projects, and probing questions reveal parallels between the feasts of Passover and Thanksgiving. The story of the founders, the journey they made, the obstacles they had to overcome, and the vision that drove them were rooted in the Hebrew Biblical narratives of Exodus and Deuteronomy. In this mini First Fruits curriculum, we will take a deep dive into Deuteronomy 26:1-11 to excavate the story and see how it can enhance our modern-day Thanksgiving celebration. This short study includes four lessons that may be completed by a student within one week or within a small study group over the course of several weeks. It is also appropriate for families with a range of ages. Modeling the art of asking good questions, the discussion prompts provide opportunities for deep thought and examination of the text. All the activities are adaptable for groups and individuals. Additionally, the study of harvest times aligns the common calendar with the Biblical feasts and festivals within the Hebrew calendar. Although the focus is on the Thanksgiving holiday, the study content and focus is applicable year-round. My Book of Hebrew Letters The Hebrew alphabet is more than symbols to help one communicate with another. According to Proverbs 8:22 and 30, these letters formed the Heavenly Word of God known as Wisdom and became the architect of creation. My Book of Hebrew Letters includes a Hebrew Letters Coloring Book and Hebrew Letters Journal. There are twenty-two coloring book pages, one for each consonant in the Hebrew alphabet, and the letters have been simplified for young children. The coloring book may be used alone, or it may be used along with the YouTube video series The Hebrew Alphabet Show, produced by Biblical Excavations. Each episode introduces a new Hebrew letter with it character (how it is written), name and some memorable information – all presented at a child’s level and in a fun talk-show style format that even an adult may enjoy. The Hebrew Letters Journal contains twenty-two journaling pages, one for each letter in A Relationship with the Hebrew Alphabet video series. Each video introduces a new Hebrew letter with its character (how it is written), name, meaning, number, related words, a scripture, and sometimes a few extra notes. Students may want to watch the video twice, completing the worksheet while viewing the second time. They may need to pause and toggle back and forth to gather the needed information. Once completed, they will have a journal full of deep knowledge regarding Hebrew letters and their meanings. Please note that A Relationship with the Hebrew Alphabet was originally designed for the Your Sabbath Invitation Curriculum. Whether or not you have purchased the curriculum, the teachings from these resources are invaluable to help one master the Hebrew alphabet.

The Moral Instruction of Children

Felix Adler
The Moral Instruction of Children is a classic parenting handbook/parenting skills guide by Felix Adler. Moral education is everywhere acknowledged to be the most important part of all education; but there has not been the same agreement in regard to the best means of securing it in the school. This has been due in part to a want of insight into the twofold nature of this sort of education; for instruction in morals includes two things: the formation of right ideas and the formation of right habits.

The modern school movement: anarchism and education in the United States

Avrich, Paul
"In 1909 Francisco Ferrer founded La Escuela Moderna with a curriculum based on the natural sciences and moral rationalism, freed of all religious dogma and political bias. Although students received systematic instruction, there were no prizes for scholarship, no marks or examinations, indeed no atmosphere of competition, coercion, or humiliation. The classes, in Ferrer's words, were guided by the "principle of solidarity and equality." For this he was murdered in 1909 by the combined forces of Spain's ruling Church and State." "Outraged by Ferrer's execution and influenced by his teaching methods, anarchists, artists, and educators joined forces to carry on his work. Between 1910 and 1960 anarchists across the United States established more than twenty schools where children might study in an atmosphere of freedom and self-reliance in contrast to the formality and discipline of the traditional classroom. These "Modern Schools" sought to abolish all forms of authority, political and economic as well as educational, and to usher in a new society based on the voluntary cooperation of free individuals. Their object, during an era of war, social ferment, and government repression, was to create not only a new type of school, but also a new culture, a new life, a new world." "Among the participants in the Modern School Movement were anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, feminist Margaret Sanger, authors Will and Ariel Durant, and groundbreaking artists Robert Henri, George Bellows, and Man Ray. Based on extensive interviews with former pupils and teachers, this work is an investigation into the potential of educational alternatives."--BOOK JACKET.
