The domain of psychology comprises the phenomena that we may call conscious or psychological reactions. By psychological reactions we mean the responses which psychological organisms, such as human individuals and higher types of animals, perform when they adjust themselves to the various stimulating objects surrounding them. A few of the topics in this book include: the primary data of psychology; the nature of basic conduct and how it is developed; the nature of sensing and perceiving; the nature of volitional conduct; the psychology of language; and the behavior of the organism during sleep.

People In Trouble

Wilhelm Reich
First published by Reich in 1953, People in Trouble is an autobiographical work in which Reich describes the development of his sociological thinking from 1927 to 1937. In simple narrative form he recounts his personal experiences with major social and political events and ideas, and reveals how these experiences gradually led him to an awareness of the deep significance of the human character structure in shaping and responding to the social process. The importance of Karl Marx's work and its distortion by communist politicians plays an important role in Reich's account, as does the political activity in the International Psychoanalytic Association which led to his expulsion from that organization in 1934. The Norwegian press campaign against his biological experiments is also discussed. People in Trouble is the story of one man's courageous struggle to understand the political activity of his fellow men.

Clocking the Mind: Mental Chronometry and Individual Differences

Jensen, Arthur R.
Mental Chronometry (MC) comprises a variety of techniques for measuring the speed with which the brain processes information. First developed in mid-1800, MC was subsequently eclipsed by more complex and practically useful types of psychometric tests stemming from Alfred Binet. This class of mental tests, however, has no true metric relating the test scores to any specific properties of the brain per se. The scores merely represent an ordinal scale, only ranking individuals according to their overall performance on a variety of complex mental tasks. The resulting scores represent no more than ranks rather than being a true metrical scale of any specific dimension of brain function. Such an ordinal scale, which merely ranks individuals in some defined population, possesses no true scale properties, possessing neither a true zero or equal intervals throughout the scale. This deficiency obstructs the development of a true natural science of mental ability. The present burgeoning interest in understanding individual differences in mental abilities in terms of the natural sciences, biology and the brain sciences in particular, demands direct measures that functionally link brain and behavior. One such natural ratio scale is time itself - the time it takes the brain to perform some elementary cognitive task, measured in milliseconds. After more than 25 years researching MC, Jensen here presents results on an absolute scale showing times for intake of visual and auditory information, for accessing short-term and long-term memory, and other cognitive skills, as a function of age, at yearly intervals from 3 to 80 years. The possible uses of MC in neurological diagnosis and the monitoring of drug effects on cognition, the chronometric study of special time-sensitive talents such as musical performance, and presents a theory of general intelligence, or g, as a function of the rate of oscillation of neural action potentials as

Freud and the seduction theory: a brief love affair

Eissler, K. R.
Eissler, who is not identified, began the manuscript in 1985 and had not completed the final revision when he died, at a date not noted. Emanuel E. Garcia and Michael Meyer, also unidentified, cleaned up the work and provided a bibliography. Like others before him, Eissler explores Freud's brief advocacy of infantile seduction and the reasons he abandoned it. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
