Integral Operators in the Theory of Linear Partial Differential Equations

Bergman, Stefan
The present book deals with the construction of solutions of linear partial differential equations by means of integral operators which transform analytic functions of a complex variable into such solutions. The theory of analytic functions has achieved a high degree of deve lopment and simplicity, and the operator method permits us to exploit this theory in the study of differential equations. Although the study of existence and uniqueness of solutions has been highly developed, much less attention has been paid to the investigation of function theo retical properties and to the explicit construction of regular and singular solutions using a unified general procedure. This book attempts to fill in the gap in this direction. Integral operators of various types have been used for a long time in the mathematical literature. In this connection one needs only to mention Euler and Laplace. The author has not attempted to give a complete account of all known operators, but rather has aimed at developing a unified approach. For this purpose he uses special operators which preserve various function theoretical properties of analytic functions, such as domains of regularity, validity of series development, connection between the coefficients of these developments and location and character of singularities, etc. However, all efforts were made to give a complete bibliography to help the reader to find more detailed information.

Laboratory Manual to Accompany Clarke and Dennis's Elementary Chemistry (Classic Reprint)

L. M. Dennis
Excerpt from Laboratory Manual to Accompany Clarke and Dennis's Elementary Chemistry The chief benefits to be derived by the beginne1 in chemistry from a course in laboratory work are training in careful Observation and accurate description and state ment Of experimental results, and practice in the neat and proper handling Of apparatus. To aid and stimulate the development Of the pupil's powers Of Observation, ques tions have been introduced under each experiment. The record of the student should not, however, be confined to the answering Of those questions, but should comprise a full description of everything that he has Observed. On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows

Lawrence Sirovich
"On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows" explores the theoretical underpinnings of gas dynamics through the lens of kinetic theory. This work delves into the mathematical and physical principles governing the behavior of gases in motion, offering insights into steady-state flows. It is invaluable for researchers and students in physics, engineering, and applied mathematics interested in a rigorous treatment of gas dynamics from a kinetic perspective. The Role of Mathematics in the Rise of Science

BOCHNER, Salomon.
The central theme of these essays is the nature and role of mathematics, its growth and spread, and its involvement with ever-wider areas of knowledge. The author attempts to determine the decisive and creative aspects of the abstractness" of mathematics which have made it the dominant intellectual force that it is. He frequently confronts the mathematics and physics of today with the mathematics and physics of the Greeks, which, however renowned, was not yet capable of this abstractness. Originally published in 1981. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Linear Drawing Showing the Application of Practical Geometry

Ellis A. Davidson
Excerpt from Linear Drawing: Showing the Application of Practical Geometry This work is intended firstly as a text-book for teachers in Schools of Art and Science, Training Colleges, National and other schools, and secondly as a manual for self-instruction for artisans and the public generally. It is impossible to over estimate the importance of a knowledge of Geometry, forming as it does the basis of all the mechanical and decorative arts; and therefore the first volume of a Technical Series has been devoted to this subject, from which, as from one common highway, branches may diverge, adapted to the various industrial arts. In order to fit the course of instruction, not only to the young, but to adults whose elementary education may be deficient, the author has deemed it best to assume, in the first instance, utter ignorance on the part of the pupils. Thus it will be seer, that in Problem I, no geometrical terms, such as "describe an arc," &c., are used, the learner being merely told to place the steel point of his compass on a given spot, whilst tracing part of a circle with the pencil leg. The Geographical and Geological, Distribution of Animals

Angelo Heilprin
Excerpt from The Geographical and Geological, Distribution of Animals In the preparation of the following pages the author has had two objects in view: that of presenting to his readers such of the more significant facts connected with the past and present distribution of animal life as might lead to a proper conception of the relations of existing faunas; and, secondly, that of furnishing to the student a work of general reference, wherein the more salient features of the geography and geology of animal forms could be sought after and readily found. The need of such a work has been frequently felt and expressed. As far as he is aware, no work of that kind has as yet appeared, and therefore, to a certain extent, this publication stands alone in the field it is intended to cover. Necessarily, much that it embraces can be found elsewhere, and treated even at considerably greater length; but the matter is not contained under a single cover, and where a special subject is expounded in extenso the treatment is usually too exhaustive to permit of immediate use by the general reader. This applies particularly to zoogeography. With reference to geological distribution there is little connectedly written - indeed, beyond what is found in text-books largely devoted to cognate subjects, practically nothing.
