The Collected Mathematical Papers of James Joseph Sylvester

James Joseph Sylvester,H. F. 1866-1956 Baker
This is the fourth volume of "The Collected Mathematical Papers of James Joseph Sylvester," documenting the prolific output of the renowned 19th-century mathematician. James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897) made significant contributions to algebra, number theory, geometry, and invariant theory. This collection, meticulously compiled and edited, offers a comprehensive view of his work, showcasing his innovative approaches and profound insights. Edited by H. F. Baker, this volume makes Sylvester's groundbreaking research accessible to modern mathematicians, historians of science, and anyone with an interest in the development of mathematical thought. Sylvester's papers are valuable not only for their mathematical content but also for their historical context, providing a glimpse into the mathematical landscape of the 19th century. This collection is an essential resource for understanding the evolution of modern mathematics and the enduring legacy of one of its most influential figures. Metric Methods in Finsler Spaces and in the Foundations of Geometry

Herbert Busemann
A classic treatment of metric methods of Finsler spaces from the acclaimed Annals of Mathematics Studies series Princeton University Press is proud to have published the Annals of Mathematics Studies since 1940. One of the oldest and most respected series in science publishing, it has included many of the most important and influential mathematical works of the twentieth century. The series continues this tradition as Princeton University Press publishes the major works of the twenty-first century. To mark the continued success of the series, all books are available in paperback and as ebooks.

Dirichlet Series Principles and Methods

S. Mandelbrojt
It is not our intention to present a treatise on Dirichlet series. This part of harmonic analysis is so vast, so rich in publications and in 'theorems' that it appears to us inconceivable and, to our mind, void of interest to assemble anything but a restricted (but relatively complete) branch of the theory. We have not tried to give an account of the very important results of G. P6lya which link his notion of maximum density to the analytic continuation of the series, nor the researches to which the names of A. Ostrowski and V. Bernstein are intimately attached. The excellent book of the latter, which was published in the Collection Borel more than thirty years ago, gives an account of them with all the clarity one can wish for. Nevertheless, some scattered results proved by these authors have found their place among the relevant results, partly by their statements, partly as a working tool. We have adopted a more personal point of view, in explaining the methods and the principles (as the title of the book indicates) that originate in our research work and provide a collection of results which we develop here; we have also included others, due to present-day authors, which enable us to form a coherent whole.

Convolution and equidistribution: Sato-Tate theorems for finite-field Mellin transforms

Katz, Nicholas M.
Convolution and Equidistribution explores an important aspect of number theory--the theory of exponential sums over finite fields and their Mellin transforms--from a new, categorical point of view. The book presents fundamentally important results and a plethora of examples, opening up new directions in the subject. The finite-field Mellin transform (of a function on the multiplicative group of a finite field) is defined by summing that function against variable multiplicative characters. The basic question considered in the book is how the values of the Mellin transform are distributed (in a probabilistic sense), in cases where the input function is suitably algebro-geometric. This question is answered by the book's main theorem, using a mixture of geometric, categorical, and group-theoretic methods. By providing a new framework for studying Mellin transforms over finite fields, this book opens up a new way for researchers to further explore the subject.

The Development of Arabic Logic.

Nicholas Rescher
Arabic contributions to medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and other fields have been extensively studied, yet Arabic logic has never been systematically investigated. In this book, Nicholas Rescher sheds new light on the major philosophical contribution of Arab logicians. He provides a historical account of the evolution of Arabic logic, from its inception in the early ninth century through the sixteenth century, when these tenets gained wide acceptance. The book also includes a bio-bibliography of 170 Arabic logicians, and a discussion of the place of each within the overall scheme of developments.

Structures for semantics

Landman, Fred
Formalization plays an important role in semantics. Doing semantics and following the literature requires considerable technical sophistica tion and acquaintance with quite advanced mathematical techniques and structures. But semantics isn't mathematics. These techniques and structures are tools that help us build semantic theories. Our real aim is to understand semantic phenomena and we need the technique to make our understanding of these phenomena precise. The problems in semantics are most often too hard and slippery, to completely trust our informal understanding of them. This should not be taken as an attack on informal reasoning in semantics. On the contrary, in my view, very often the essential insight in a diagnosis of what is going on in a certain semantic phenomenon takes place at the informal level. It is very easy, however, to be misled into thinking that a certain informal insight provides a satisfying analysis of a certain problem; it will often turn out that there is a fundamental unclarity about what the informal insight actually is. Formalization helps to sharpen those insights and put them to the test.

One Hand at a Time

Patricia E. Smith
Many elementary teachers who have taught time-telling skills would propose that the mathematical skills associated with time-telling are among the most difficult for young students to learn. This booklet was developed to relate some of the concepts of time to physical models, providing methods for isolating specific time-telling concepts within a concrete framework. The time-telling of each hand of the clock is presented separately, with the major focus on using the hour hand. The booklet contains stories, activities, games, bulletin board ideas, and worksheets designed to accommodate a range of teaching and learning styles. Many of the activities in the booklet's seven sections are also designed to help integrate mathematics with other areas of the elementary school curriculum, such as social studies, language arts, and science. Reproducible worksheets and blackline masters are included in the back of the book. (TW)

Papers on Group Theory and Topology

Max Dehn
The work of Max Dehn (1878-1952) has been quietly influential in mathematics since the beginning of the 20th century. In 1900 he became the first to solve one of the famous Hilbert problems (the third, on the decomposition of polyhedra), in 1907 he collaborated with Heegaard to produce the first survey of topology, and in 1910 he began publishing his own investigations in topology and combinatorial group theory. His influence is apparent in the terms Dehn's algorithm, Dehn's lemma and Dehn surgery (and Dehnsche Gruppenbilder, generally known in English as Cayley diagrams), but direct access to his work has been difficult. No edition of his works has been produced, and some of his most important results were never published, at least not by him. The present volume is a modest attempt to bring Dehn's work to a wider audience, particularly topologists and group theorists curious about the origins of their subject and interested in mining the sources for new ideas. It consists of English translations of eight works : five of Dehn's major papers in topology and combinatorial group theory, and three unpublished works which illuminate the published papers and contain some results not available elsewhere. In addition, I have written a short introduction to each work, summarising its contents and trying to establish its place among related works of Dehn and others, and I have added an appendix on the Dehn-Nielsen theorem (often known simply as Nielsen's theorem) .
