The Indictment

Sabina Citron
Crucial to understanding the situation in the Middle East is a grasp of the nature of the conflict, as well as its historical roots. The Indictment shows how the Arab war against Israel has taken shape as an expertly waged propaganda war, and how latent anti-Semitism contributes to the worlds acceptance of thinly veiled lies. Drawing on documented events and news sources, Auschwitz-survivor Sabina Citron takes a fearless look at the roots of Christian anti-Semitism and how it creates a receptive audience for the Arab propaganda war on Israel.

Everything is possible: life and business lessons from a self-made billionaire and the founder of Slim-Fast

Abraham, S. Daniel
In Everything Is Possible, Dan Abraham, the legendary founder of Slim-Fast, recounts the story of his personal and business life, starting from his childhood and army years and his purchase of Thompson Medical for $5,000 when he was in his early twenties, and culminating in the sale of Slim-Fast for $2.3 billion in 2000. At the heart of Everything Is Possible are 16 life lessons that Abraham has picked up in sixty years of a hard-working business career. Among them: There is no such thing as a mistake (see pages 198–202) Why I always insured that my suppliers made a profit (see pages 208–9) The philosophy of continuous improvement (see pages 202–5) If you have a theory and the facts dispute it, drop your theory (pages 205–8) The realization that we all have both good and bad luck in our lives, but many of us don't prepare for either (pages 216–9) I never saw a man pick a fight with a stronger man (pages 191–5) But this memoir, a brilliant guide for anyone starting and growing a business, is about far more than business. Abraham tells the heartwarming story of growing up in a modest home in Long Beach, New York, and the lessons he learned from his mother, father, and one high school teacher that have guided him ever since. And there is more, much more: a discussion of his beliefs about the pleasure of giving; what he has learned from Judaism about ethics and the Golden Rule; and what he learned from his experiences with the FDA about the importance of compromise and about the necessity to fight hard when you believe you're right. At a time, when newspapers are filled with reports of business fraud and deceptions, and when so many people believe that to have spectacular success in business you have to be ruthless and dishonest, this is an account of a business life that has been lived honorably, passionately, and successfully, and with fun. Everything Is Possible is a book to be savored and shared with young and old alike.

Co-memory and melancholia: Israelis memorialising the Palestinian Nakba

Lentin, Ronit
The 1948 war that led to the creation of the State of Israel also resulted in the destruction of Palestinian society when some 80 per cent of the Palestinians who lived in the major part of Palestine upon which Israel was established became refugees. Israelis call the 1948 war their 'War of Independence' and the Palestinians their 'Nakba', or catastrophe. After many years of Nakba denial, land appropriation, political discrimination against the Palestinians within Israel and the denial of rights to Palestinian refugees, the Nakba is beginning to penetrate Israeli public discourse. This book explores the construction of collective memory in Israeli society, where the memory of the trauma of the Holocaust and of Israel's war dead competes with the memory claims of the dispossessed Palestinians. Against a background of the Israeli resistance movement, Lentin's central argument is that commemorating the Nakba by Israeli Jews is motivated by an unresolved melancholia about the disappearance of Palestine and the dispossession of the Palestinians, a melancholia that shifts mourning from the lost object to the grieving subject. Lentin theorises Nakba co-memory as a politics of resistance, counterpoising commemorative practices by internally displaced Israeli Palestinians with Israeli Jewish discourses of the Palestinian right of return, and questions whether return narratives by Israeli Jews, courageous as they may seem, are ultimately about Israeli Jewish self-healing rather than justice for Palestine.

The Words That Made Australia How a Nation Came to Know Itself

Chris Feik,Robert Manne
This is not a book of documents, snippets or worthy speeches. Instead it presents the original essays and the moments of insight that told us what Australia is and could be. These are the essential statements - from historians, reporters, novelists, mavericks and visionaries - that take us from Federation to the present - day, and tell a story of national self - discovery. There is the Frenchman who saw that Australia was a 'workingman's paradise', and the historian who explained why. The two reporters who realised the true significance of Gallipoli and conveyed it to the nation. Russel Ward on the Australian Legend, Robin Boyd on the Australian Ugliness, Donald Horne on the Lucky Country, W.E.H. Stanner on the Great Australian Silence and Anne Summers on Manzone Country. Real Matildas, Cultural Cringers, Future Eaters and Forgotten People - and much more. Memorably written and cohesive, this is the essential sourcebook of the words that made Australia. Includes essays by Miles Franklin, Albert Metin, Ellis Ashmead - Bartlett, Keith Murdoch, Maybanke Anderson, D.H. Lawrence, W.K. Hancock, P.R. Stephensen, Vance Palmer, Robert Menzies, A.A. Phillips, Manning Clark, Russel Ward, Barry Humphries, Robin Boyd, Donald Horne, W.E.H. Stanner, Humphrey McQueen, Hugh Stretton, Anne Summers, Miriam Dixson, Bernard Smith, Paul Kelly, Geoffrey Blainey, Tim Flannery, David Malouf, Inga Clendinnen, Noel Pearson, Judith Brett and Ghassan Hage.
