Prophecy: the history of an idea in medieval Jewish philosophy

Kreisel, Howard Theodore
More than any other topic, prophecy represents the point at which the Divine meets the human, the Absolute meets the relative. How can a human being attain the Word of God? In what manner does God, when conceived as eternal and transcendent, address corporeal, transitory creatures? What happens to God's divine Truth when it is beheld by minds limited in their power to apprehend, and influenced by the intellectual currents of their time and place? How were these issues viewed by the great Jewish philosophers of the past, who took the divine communication and all it entails seriously, while at the same time desired to understand it as much as humanly possible in the course of dealing with a myriad of other issues that occupied their attention? This book offers an in-depth study of prophecy in the thought of seven of the leading medieval Jewish philosophers: R. Saadiah Gaon, R. Judah Halevi, Maimonides, Gersonides, R. Hasdai Crescas, R. Joseph Albo and Baruch Spinoza. It attempts to capture the `original voice' of these thinkers by looking at the intellectual milieus in which they developed their philosophies, and by carefully analyzing their views in their textual contexts. It also deals with the relation between the earlier approaches and the later ones. Overall, this book presents a significant model for narrating the history of an idea.

The Book of Radical General Semantics

Gad Horowitz
The Book of Radical General Semantics, arranged into seven Parts, begins with a new look at the motor of Korzybski’s general semantics – the Structural Differential. Part II introduces Silent Practice – attention to sensory experience – as integral to saner evaluative processes. Silent Practice precedes The Devices of General Semantics (Part III) as it is a skill that facilitates that “fraction of a second psycho-logical delay” intended by the devices. In Part IV, The “Self” and Free Will, the Structural Differential is turned inward to provide a multi-levelled map of one’s very own self in which oneself is three: event-self, object-self, label-self. In Part V, Politics, the devices and formulations of general semantics are applied to such diverse issues as President Obama’s ‘You Didn’t Build That’ speech, the ultra-left ‘Tiqqun’ group, and the Canadian monarchy. The Meta Model purposely comes late (Part VI) in the book. Here Gad returns the Meta Model developed as a practice within Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to its origin in General Semantics. Part VII. Participation: Myth Art Religion brings together a number of resonances of radical general semantics with studies of music, photography, phenomenology, filming theoretical concepts, writing, myth and religion. While most of the writing is by Gad Horowitz, Colin Campbell has contributed a number of very rich chapters especially in Part VII.

Communication Conduct in an Island Community

Erving Goffman
Canadian-born Erving Goffman (1922-1982) was the twentieth century's most important sociologist writing in English. His 1953 dissertation is published here for the first time, on the hundredth anniversary of his birth. The remarkable study, based on fieldwork on a remote Scottish island, presents in embryonic form the full spread of Goffman's thought. Framed as a "report on a study of conversational interaction," the dissertation lingers on the modest talk of island "crofters." It is trademark Goffman: ambitious, unconventional in form, and brimmed with big-picture insight. The thesis is that social order is made and re-made in communication-the "interaction order" he re-visited in a famous and final talk before his 1982 death. The dissertation is, as Yves Winkin writes in a new introduction, the "Rosetta stone for his entire work." It was here, in 360 dense pages, that Goffman revealed, quietly, his peerless sensitivity to the invisible wireframes of everyday life.
