A coat of many colours: two centuries of Jewish life in Canada

Abella, Irving M.
Published in conjunction with a travelling exhibition entitled "A Coat of Many Colours" mounted by the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Pp. 105-111 discuss antisemitism in the late 19th-early 20th centuries, particularly the views of Goldwin Smith of Toronto and his widespread influence on politicians and in the press, and antisemitism in French Catholic Quebec. Ch. 8 (pp. 179-207), "The Dark Years, 1930-1945, " deals with a period in which the country was permeated with antisemitism. Describes discrimination against Jews in universities, employment opportunities, sale of properties, etc. In Quebec, the Catholic Church and French Canadian nationalist movements advocated antisemitic actions, including support for a boycott against Jewish merchants and anti-immigration crusades. Mentions organized Jewish efforts to combat this trend, and the fascist organizations which became active during this period. Pp. 213-220 deal with the successful postwar campaign by Jewish organizations and individuals against the discriminatory practices.

The war game: studies of the new civilian militarists

Horowitz, Irving Louis
War gaming has become a characteristic feature of modern life. From amateur clubs to professional academicians playing the war game in the company of military circles, we have come up against the phenomenon of the "robotization" of human life. Irving Louis Horowitz argues that those who protest the idea that war is a game do so on moral grounds that leave unanswered tough questions: What is the alternative to playing the game? What will become of us if we allow the opponent to become the better "player" in an all-or-nothing game of extinction? Horowitz provides answers in a logical manner while focusing on facts and ethical alternatives to risky ethics. The work is divided into three sections: The New Civilian Militarists, Thermonuclear Peace and Its Political Equivalents, and General Theory of Conflict and Conflict Resolution. Included are such topics as arms, policies, and games; morals, missiles, and militarism; and conflict, consensus, and cooperation. Horowitz concludes that it is time to register the fact that the basic option to destructive uses of science is not traditional morality, but better science--a science of survival. With a new introduction by Howard Schneiderman along with a major essay and other materials not included in the original edition, this classic work is a worthy contribution to intellectual debate in the twenty-first century and a must read for military strategists, sociologists, and historians.

Tito and His People

Howard Fast
The name "Tito" has become legendary in the annals of our common struggle against Hitlerism. Yet less is known about him today than most men of equal renown. Howard Fast, that distinguished American author of "Citizen Tom Paine" fame, made a careful study of the facts and wrote this incredible account of a man and a people who refused to understand the meaning of the word "defeat."

A strange death

Halkin, Hillel
A recreation of a village in Palestine and its characters, each gently and carefully called back from the past to tell their stories in a literary narrative. In 1917, the members of a spy ring who sought to assist the British in driving the Turks from Palestine were betrayed. It was said that four women of the town were seen laughing at the arrests of their neighbors. Each met a strange fate: one died prematurely, the second went mad, the third was an invalid and the fourth lived out her life in disrepute. When Halkin read this story of the village that he lived in, it inspired him to begin a journey into the past. His friends and neighbors each offered a different version of the events, and Halkin discovered that each of them was in some way affected by the legendary fate of the spy ring

Herblock Special Report

Herbert Block
This book obviously does not set out a complete record of the Nixon scandals or of the Nixon career. It doesn't even include all the cartoons about Nixon or relating to him--which probably number more than those Block did on almost any other public figure (good or bad), including such long-in-the-limelight persons as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin. It does include a large number of the Nixon cartoons, along with dates of some incidents, and comments and recollections about their subject--a political career which in some way has affected all of us.
