Insiders and outsiders: the Indian working class of Durban, 1910-1990

Freund, Bill
In this social and economic history of the Indian working class of Durban, Bill Freund has woven strands of gender related, political, ethnic, and cultural issues into a complex and intriguing pattern. As "insiders and outsiders," the Indian working class presented an analytical challenge in studying economic history "from below." The result is a skillful representation of the nuances in the interplay of social forces, and the initiatives of particular classes and particular cultural formations, which simultaneously bring the larger picture into focus. The essential underlying concern of this book is to relate the history of this group to the changing nature of South African capitalism in the twentieth century. It unites an interest in people and agency with a conviction that structures are important in limiting the circumstances in which men and women pursue their destiny.

Far from the promised land? being Jewish in New Zealand

Beaglehole, Ann
This study is largely based on 93 interviews conducted in the 1990s with current or ex-New Zealand Jews of widely differing backgrounds. Ch. 5 (pp. 85-99) discusses antisemitism (as do pp. 15-18, 28-30 in ch. 1). Jews in New Zealand (who in 1991 numbered 3,048 or 0.1% of the total population) generally have kept a low profile. Most of the interviewees view present-day antisemitism as slight, despite some anti-Jewish Christian attitudes. Four types of antisemitism are noted: ignorant, petty (e.g. jokes), political (including anti-Zionist and anti-Israel), and malicious (including vandalism and Holocaust denial). Local Jews have been cautious in responding to antisemitism, though there has been some effort to speak out. While the identities of survivors and their descendants have been strongly affected by the Holocaust, those of other new Zealand Jews have not. Commemoration of the Holocaust has been much more modest than in Australia or in Israel. Some Jews continue to feel that "'it' could happen again, even in New Zealand".

Life forms and meaning structure

Schutz, Alfred
This volume contains a translation of four early manuscripts by Alfred Schutz, unpublished at the time, written between 1924 and 1928. The publication of these four essays adds much to our knowledge and appreciation of the wide range of Schutz's phenomenological and sociological interests. Originally published in 1987. The essays consist of: a challenging presentation of a phenomenology of cognition and a treatment of Bergson's conceptions of images, duration, space time and memory; a discussion of the meanings connected with the grammatical forms of language in general; a consideration of the relation between meaning-contents and literary forms in poetry, literary prose narration and dramatic presentation; and an examination of resemblances and differences in the inner forms and characteristics of the major theatrical art forms.

Infinite Dimensional Groups with Applications

Victor Kac
This volume records most of the talks given at the Conference on Infinite-dimensional Groups held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley, California, May 10-May 15, 1984, as a part of the special program on Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The purpose of the conference was to review recent developments of the theory of infinite-dimensional groups and its applications. The present collection concentrates on three very active, interrelated directions of the field: general Kac-Moody groups, gauge groups (especially loop groups) and diffeomorphism groups. I would like to express my thanks to the MSRI for sponsoring the meeting, to Ms. Faye Yeager for excellent typing, to the authors for their manuscripts, and to Springer-Verlag for publishing this volume. Infinite Regress: The Theory and History of Varieties of Change

Nicholas Rescher
Regression addresses what has come before; it is a matter of looking backward of retrospections? The motionless things of nature are generally forward-looking their problem is that of the question: Where do we go from here? It is primarily with intelligent beings that we ask: How did we get to where we now find ourselves? Regression and infinite regression in particular is thus a concept that has gained a greater prominence in the human sciences than in the sciences of nature. Argumentation to infinite regress has long been a favored instrument of philosophical dialectic. Philosophers have used it to disprove the positions they model to criticize. Infinite regresses, so they reason, are unrealizable: they cannot be completed so as to achieve some definitive result. And thereby anything that would engender an infinite regress is automatically made ineffective. Infinite Regress examines the theory of regression and includes information on the topics of vicious regress, innocuous regress, circularity regress, and propositional regress. Also discussed is the history of regression stemming from ancient times, to medieval times, to early modern history. Some of the other chapters in this book focus on world class philosophers including Immanuel Kant, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, and Bertrand Russell. The book will play a significant role in theoretical philosophy as well as in social philosophy and the philosophy of mind.

Al kanfei Yonah: collected studies of Jonas C. Greenfield on Semitic philology

Greenfield, Jonas C.
These volumes contain most of the papers of the late Jonas C. Greenfield written in English, with source and lexeme indexes, and is intended for scholars and students of the Ancient Near East, Aramaic, Hebrew Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls, and Semitic philology. Greenfield published numerous articles in a wide range of journals, some of them fairly inaccessible. He himself had begun to collect his papers, with the aim of revising and republishing them, when his sudden death intervened. It is the privilege of the editors, two close friends of Greenfield and one of his former students, to present this collection to the public. This collection shows the wealth, breadth, and creativity of Greenfield's substantial scholarship, as well as his desire to collaborate with his colleagues in academic pursuits. Jonas Greenfield Biography Prof. Jonas C. Greenfield was born in New York City in 1926 and completed his Ph.D. at Yale University in 1956. In addition to a distinguished teaching career that spanned nearly two and a half decades at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he was a member of the team of translators of the Jewish Publication Society and of the Dead Sea Scrolls Supervisory Committee of the Israel Antiquities Authority, an honorary fellow of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and the Royal Asiatic Society; in 1994, he was elected to the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. History in my life: a memoir of three eras

Berend, T. Iván
Berend's memoir offers an interesting case study, a subjective addition to the "objective" historical works on Central and Eastern European state socialism. It describes the hard choices of intellectuals in a dictatorial state: 1. remain in isolation, concentrate on scholarly works, and exclude politics in your personal life; 2. be in opposition, criticize and unveil the regime, accept discrimination and exclusion; 3. remain within the establishment and work for reforming the country using legal possibilities to criticize the regime and to achieve changes from within. Ivan T. Berend, is Distinguished Professor at the University of California Los Angeles, Director of the European Studies Program. He was one of the masterminds of regime change in Hungary. He made a career in Hungary as a university professor, Rector of the University of Economics (1973-79), and President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1985-90). He was President of the International Committee of Historical Sciences (1995-2000), and Vice-President of the International Economic History Association (1986-1994). His research interests are the complex economic, social, ideological, and cultural history of Central and Eastern Europe in the 19th-20th century; economic modernization; problems of European backwardness; transition from state socialism to capitalism. He published 26 books and more than 120 studies.--Publisher's description

Fragments of Time From a Secure Childhood in Prewar Vienna to the Challenges of Emigration, Adaptation, and Pursuits in Science and in Educational and Social Change

Peter Lindenfeld
It was a time of destruction of lives and futures and of rebirth and rebuilding. In his lively style with a wide sweep of insights Peter Lindenfeld recounts his personal and often intimate experiences, a microcosm of life during a time spanning nearly a century. The seemingly stable atmosphere of his childhood in Vienna is destroyed by the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany. The forced exodus leads him to North America, first to Vancouver, then to New York and a life that melds his original culture with that of his new environment, creating a richness-in science and music, and in intellectual and political life-that transcends both.
