Die Reise Mit Der Zeitmaschine Science-Fiction-Roman (Die Rückkehr Der Zeitmaschine)

Egon Friedell

The Diamond A Study in the Chinese and Hellenistic Folk-Lore

Berthold Laufer
The first fifteen pages of this learned study are the ones of chief interest to students of the classics. In the Memoirs of the Four Worthies or Lords of the Liang Dynasty , written by Chang Yüe (667-730 A.D.), a story is told about an island in the Western Sea (Mediterranean) where there is an inaccessible ravine in which precious stones lie. The inhabitants throw flesh into this ravine. Birds pick up the flesh in their beaks and as they fly, they drop the precious stones. The men of the country are clever workers of gems, which are called Fu-lin after the name of the country. Fu-lin is the Chinese name for some part of the Roman Empire, probably Syria. A legend similar in all its essential features is found in Epiphanius, bishop of Constantia in Cyprus in the fourth century. Dr. Laufer points out the close likeness of this legend to the story of the Arabians and their curious method of obtaining cinnamon told by Herodotus iii. 111, and to a somewhat similar tale in Pliny N.H. xxxviii. 33, but prudently refrains from attempting to link them closely. The source of the legend he finds in the Hellenistic Orient. To one already impressed with the fact that Hellenistic artistic motives influenced early Chinese and even Japanese art in a marked degree, the thesis is in itself reasonable, and Dr. Laufer's proofs are convincing. There are two further points of interest in this study for the classicist and archaeologist. The author is convinced (pp. 42-46) that the adamas of the ancients was actually the diamond, but concludes that ancient gem-workers did not understand the process of cutting and polishing diamonds to add to their luster (pp. 46-50). The study contains other information which will be attractive chiefly to Sinologists and to those interested in the history of the diamond. In this pamphlet Dr. Laufer has presented another useful link of the broken chain of evidence which connects Hellenistic-Roman civilization with the Far East. Curiously enough the classical archaeologist and the classicist seem to regard the evidence upon this new sphere of Greek influence either with suspicion or with apathy. - Classical Philology [1918]

The Geographical and Geological, Distribution of Animals

Angelo Heilprin
Excerpt from The Geographical and Geological, Distribution of Animals In the preparation of the following pages the author has had two objects in view: that of presenting to his readers such of the more significant facts connected with the past and present distribution of animal life as might lead to a proper conception of the relations of existing faunas; and, secondly, that of furnishing to the student a work of general reference, wherein the more salient features of the geography and geology of animal forms could be sought after and readily found. The need of such a work has been frequently felt and expressed. As far as he is aware, no work of that kind has as yet appeared, and therefore, to a certain extent, this publication stands alone in the field it is intended to cover. Necessarily, much that it embraces can be found elsewhere, and treated even at considerably greater length; but the matter is not contained under a single cover, and where a special subject is expounded in extenso the treatment is usually too exhaustive to permit of immediate use by the general reader. This applies particularly to zoogeography. With reference to geological distribution there is little connectedly written - indeed, beyond what is found in text-books largely devoted to cognate subjects, practically nothing. An Outline of Social Psychology

Kantor, J R
"An Outline of Social Psychology" is a foundational text in the field of behavioral science, offering a comprehensive framework for understanding social behavior from an objective, interbehavioral perspective. Written by the influential psychologist J. R. Kantor, this work systematically explores the functional relationships between individuals and their social environments. Rather than relying on the mentalistic explanations common in early 20th-century psychology, the text emphasizes the observation of human conduct as it is shaped by cultural stimuli and social institutions. Throughout the volume, Kantor examines the development of social habits, the dynamics of group behavior, and the mechanisms of collective action. By treating social phenomena as complex interactions rather than internal states, the work provides a rigorous scientific methodology for analyzing how societal forces influence individual personality and conduct. The book serves as a significant historical contribution to the evolution of psychological thought, challenging traditional assumptions and proposing a more integrated view of the human experience. "An Outline of Social Psychology" remains an essential resource for scholars of psychological history, behaviorism, and sociology, offering timeless insights into the structures of social adaptation and the power of the institutional environment over the individual. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Essays of Isidor Rayner

Rayner, Isidor
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated.1914 Excerpt: ... PASSAGES. Is the world a voluntary creation? The answer to that question would solve the riddle of the universe. # Is the mind ever entirely thoughtless, inactive and unconscious? The answer to that would tend to settle the question of immortality. Metaphysics cannot accomplish it. Natural science may. # A person does a criminal deed who tries to weaken any one's faith in religion. The most incredible system of religion is better than none at all. Millions of people have lived and died with no time to attend to their spiritual wants, and with no apparent object to subserve on earth. The reasoning mind cannot grasp the idea that the world was a voluntary creation. The act that brought the world into existence must have been subject to and circumscribed by law. # # The question is often asked: What is a miracle? The answer is a very simple one. Every event that ever took place on the earth is a natural event and can be traced to a natural cause. Those that cannot be so traced, never took place. # Every optimist is not a fool, but I never knew a fool who was not an optimist. # There is not a perfectly healthy body in the universe. And if there is no such body, why should there be a perfectly healthy mind? There is but a thin line of separation between genius and insanity. Spinoza, perhaps, came nearer the truth than any other philosopher. The only trouble about his conception is that it does not explain the intelligent design and purpose that manifests itself in many parts of creation. The most marvelous mystery of creation is the fact that man should never yet be able to discover the object of his creation. # Conscience is the universal religion of the soul. Some persons have no conscience. The faculty is benumbed or dead. To those who have a...
