J.L. Vives De veritate fidei Christianae: book IV the Christian--Muslim dialogue

Vives, Juan Luis
A literary dialogue between a Christian and a Muslim, maintaining the superiority of Christianity: this volume presents a critical Latin text and the first ever English translation, annotated, of this important but hitherto largely overlooked document among sources in Christian – Muslim relations. Some of Vives’s criticisms of Muhammad and Islam are based on scripture or reason; many others rely on lampoon of Arab or Islamic folk tales. Still, he censures Muslim followers only narrowly, far less for moral failings or hatred of Christians than for gullibility in accepting Islam. Book Four provides valuable evidence of the reach and the limits of Vives’s humanistic tolerance as applied to religious conflict.

His work Demonstrations provide the earliest and one of the best accounts of the Judaism being practiced there with little rabbinical influence. Neusner translates those parts of the work that provide such information.

Nietzsche's pre-Dionysian Apollo and the limits of contemporary thought

Segovia, Carlos A.
"Nietzsche's pre-Dionysian Apollo and the Limits of Contemporary Thought is the first study to place Nietzsche's Dionysian philosophy in the context of Nietzsche's overall thought. It interprets Nietzsche's Dionysian philosophy as a development of Nietzsche's earliest thinking as it is laid out in his school dissertation on Theognis of Megara. As author Carlos A. Segovia contends, the key figure in this early thinking is not Dionysus but Apollo, an earthly Apollo who, despite his partial erasure after The Birth of Tragedy, haunts Nietzsche in his later writings, including his unpublished fragments and Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The author also shows that retrieving Nietzsche's pre-Dionysian Apollo can help us move beyond the theoretical limits assumed by today's two major philosophical trends, speculative realism and new materialism, thus stressing Nietzsche's untimeliness from a strictly contemporary standpoint. This book will be essential reading for all interested in Nietzsche and the birth of contemporary philosophy, including graduate students and researchers"--

Peter Maurin Prophet in the Twentieth Century

Marc H. Ellis
In Peter Maurin: Prophet in the Twentieth Century , Marc H. Ellis traces Maurin's life from his early years--as peasant, brother, and Catholic activist--through his meeting with Dorothy Day. Ellis' Chronicle focuses on the consequences of that meeting: the founding of the Catholic Worker movement and newspaper, the founding of hospitality, the farming communes. Peter Maurin: Prophet in the Twentieth Century is the first biography to really examine Maurin's thought. A commitment to non-violent reform and to a life of poverty were chief tenets of Maurin's philosophy; it was Maurin's notion that farmers and scholars would labor and learn together in the ideal world. Ellis discusses these and other ideas of Maurin, their development and their particular importance today.
