The transformational decade: snapshots of a decade from 9/11 to the Obama presidency

London, Herbert I.
"The Transformational Decade shows the transformation that took place in American life from the attack on the World Trade Center to the emergence of the Obama presidency. It is not a strict history, but rather snapshots of a decade that has fundamentally altered perceptions of the United States. In some respects, this book is modeled after Frederick Lewis Allen's Only Yesterday and Since Yesterday, acclaimed books that sought to capture the spirit of the 1920s and '30s. London sees the period from 2001 to 2008 as "post yesterday," a period that broke with the past, challenged the essence of the free market, and contested America's role on the world stage. In an effort to limn these snapshots from recent history, London has written several "decade" books: The Overheated Decade, The Counterfeit Decade, and The Decade of Denial. This book, The Transformational Decade, differs in that it represents a separation from the past. London illuminates a decade that he considers to be a new and more frightful period than any in recent American history."--Publisher's website.

The Underground Stream An Historical Novel of a Moment in the American Winter

Albert Maltz
The Underground Stream is a remarkable work in the canon of proletarian literature. It holds special significance for trade unionists and communists, offering a vivid portrayal of workers’ struggles in the industrial heart of the United States and highlighting the pivotal role played by militants of the historic Communist Party USA in these struggles. Beyond its historical and political value, the novel tells a compelling tale of the profound sacrifices demanded of communists in the fight for a better future. What sets Albert Maltz’s work apart is his portrayal of proletarian heroes, protagonists driven by the ideals of a more humane and just world. They are communists—pioneers and workers who stand firmly against a society built on exploitation and the machinery of oppression. Maltz depicts them not as idealized figures but as real, living people, complete with virtues and flaws, whose daily actions and efforts, no matter how small, play a vital role in the collective struggle to transform society. The Underground Stream exposes the harsh realities of the class struggle, challenging working-class readers to recognize their responsibility in contributing to its organization and advancement.

The many voyages of Arthur Wellington Clah: a Tsimshian man on the Pacific Northwest Coast

Brock, Peggy
"First-hand accounts of indigenous people's encounters with colonialism are rare. A daily diary that extends over fifty years is unparalleled. Based on a transcription of Arthur Wellington Clah's diaries, this book offers a riveting account of a Tsimshian elder who moved in both colonial and Aboriginal worlds. From his birth in 1831 to his death in 1916, Clah witnessed profound change: the arrival of traders, missionaries, and miners, and the establishment of industrial fisheries, wage labour, and reserves. His many voyages physical, cultural, and spiritual provide an unprecedented Aboriginal perspective on colonial relationships on the Pacific Northwest Coast."--Pub. desc.

Is NAFTA Constitutional?

Bruce Ackerman,David Golove
By a vote of 61 to 38, the Senate joined the House in declaring that "Congress approves...the North American Free Trade Agreement." The vote was virtually unnoticed, since the real battle over NAFTA was in the House. But there is a puzzle here. The President, the Framers assure us, "shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur." Whatever happened to the Treaty Clause? Bruce Ackerman and David Golove tell the story of the Treaty Clause's being displaced in the twentieth century by a modern procedure in which the House of Representatives joins the Senate in the process of consideration, but simple majorities in both Houses suffice to commit the nation. This is called the Congressional-Executive Agreement, and is a response to a sea change in public opinion during and after World War II. This agreement substituted for a failed constitutional amendment that would have required all treaties to be approved by majorities in both Houses rather than by two-thirds of the Senate. The modern Congressional-Executive Agreement was self-consciously developed in order to make formal constitutional amendment unnecessary. So, is NAFTA constitutional? This book is reprinted from the Harvard Law Review .

Vassouras: A Brazilian Coffee County, 1850-1900

Stanley J. Stein
This book is a now classic social and economic study of the origins, apogee, and decline of coffee in the Parahyba Valley of South Central Brazil. Local society, the free-planters, professionals, tradesmen, and lower class citizens-and the slaves, are viewed through the routine of plantation life. The author shows how abolition, erosion, and bankruptcy transformed virgin forest into a wasteland of eroded hillsides and abandoned towns, of disillusioned planters and poverty-stricken black freedmen.

A sprat to catch a mackerel: key principles to build your business

Ackerman, Raymond
When Raymond Ackerman was fired from his job in 1966, he persuaded a group of friends to loan him the money to buy three small Pick 'n Pay stores, which at the time employed a total of 175 people. On his retirement, 44 years later, he had changed the face of southern African retailing, growing his company to encompass 792 stores in eight countries, employing more than 60 000 people, and generating an annual turnover of around R60 billion. In this book Raymond Ackerman shares the basic tenets behind his business philosophy -- timeless principles that have guided him through some of South Africa's most turbulent times. This is a book for anyone, whatever their background, who has ever dreamed of starting a business. Providing practical, accessible advice on how to define and build your vision, the book will help you develop your own enterprise, reaching success and self-actualised growth -- not by chasing profit, but by giving expression to a driving passion. Rated by the Financial Times as among the World's Top 100 Most Respected Businessmen, Raymond Ackerman is also the first South African ever to receive the International Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. Tatra: the legacy of Hans Ledwinka

Margolius, Ivan,Henry, John G. (Writer on the automobile industry)
Tatra – The Legacy of Hans Ledwinka is the story of the Tatra company, which originated in the Central European country of Czechoslovakia. It is a tale of great innovation and avant-garde design in automobile engineering. It is also the story of one man – Hans Ledwinka – and his visionary concepts which have become highly influential, although often undervalued, contributions to the development of car technology. Until now, Hans Ledwinka's talent has hardly been recognised; in retrospect, he can be judged equal to car designers such as Benz, Daimler and Porsche, whose endeavours have been fully recorded many times over. With his revolutionary Tatra cars, Ledwinka consistently pushed back the frontiers of automobile construction, and it’s certain that without his inspiration, the Volkswagen in its air-cooled rear-engined form would perhaps never have been conceived. This book suggests that Ledwinka played a greater part in this development than has previously been appreciated. The authors have covered the full history of the Tatra company, which is one of the oldest factories in continuous automobile manufacture, dating back to the 19th century. By doing this, they have placed both Ledwinka and the Czechoslovak Tatra company in their rightful place in the history of car design, and provided a fully comprehensive assessment of the influence of Tatra car designs and their inspired creator. The text of this larger format 2nd edition has been fully revised and updated since the 1990 edition. This new edition also contains many additional illustrations. The book also has a new foreword, written by Norman Foster, the British architect, and proud owner of a Tatra T87, who pays tribute to the aesthetic qualities of this design classic and captures the fascination of both designers and motor historians with the development of Tatra.
