Keynes for Our Times

Skidelsky, Robert
"John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) was arguably the most important economist of the twentieth century; his ideas have fundamentally altered the way governments approach economic policy. Exploring the enduring relevance of his ideas, Robert Skidelsky emphasizes Keynes's conception of economics as a moral science. Keynes was deeply invested in the broader societal implications of economic policies, and this book highlights his belief in economics as a tool for achieving the good life. Skidelsky sheds new light on Keynes's views on capitalism, discusses his advocacy of low interest rates, and delves into his thoughts on economic instability. He also offers fresh insight into Keynes's ideas about money, his philosophical foundations, and his unique approach to uncertainty and probability. Ultimately, Skidelsky shows how Keynes's vision of an economic policy that prioritizes the common good can be adapted to help solve our current economic and political challenges"--

W. D. Gann Treasure Discovered Simple Trading Plans for Stocks and Commodities

Robert Krausz
FORWORDI was once introduced at a seminar as having the best job in the world! The group leader exclaimed that as Editor of Technical Analysis of STOCKS & COMMODITIES magazine, I had the opportunity to see and work with all the new exciting technology, trading software and disclosed trading systems coming on the market. He surmised that I probably felt like a kid in a candy store. There is some truth to his words. I do see a great deal of new and exciting developments in trading software, as well as working first-hand with publishing new ideas and trading concepts found in our magazine. But to me, the most interesting aspect of my job is the people I work with.As Editor, I have worked with the famous and not-so famous, professional money managers handling billions as well as individuals who only trade their own money. Naturally, some made strong impressions upon me, for I learn, along with my readers, new things everyday. One individual, though, who made the most valuable of impressions was Robert Krausz, which is why I was happy to assist on this project. If you've ever seen Robert Krausz speak, or ever read Jack Schwager's New Market Wizards or his articles in from STOCKS & COMMODITIES magazine you will know that Krausz has identified that the chief difference between the successful trader and the wanna-be is the lack of a thoroughly researched trading plan. But what exactly is a trading plan? Within theses pages, you have the opportunity to learn and use a real trading plan in fact, a plan that has shown remarkable viability over history. The plans offered within these pages cover all of the important conceptual issues of having defined entry and exit rules, risk management and profit objectives. In addition, Krausz introduces some new swing trading techniques.Of course, there is no law saying that the plans will hold up going forward, but you can certainly see how you would have done with hindsight. If nothing else happens, your own systems- and skills will take a giant step forward. Thom Hartle, Editor Technical Analysis of STOCKS & COMMODITIES magazine.

Eyes Wide Open How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World

Noreena Hertz
Eyes Wide Open: How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World is Noreena Hertz’s practical, cutting-edge guide to help you cut through the data deluge and make smarter and better choices, based on her highly popular TED talk. In this eye-opening handbook, the internationally noted speaker, economics expert, and bestselling author of IOU: The Debt Threat and Silent Takeover reveals the extent to which the biggest decisions in our lives are often made on the basis of flawed information, weak assumptions, corrupted data, insufficient scrutiny of others, and a lack of self-knowledge. To avert such disasters, Hertz persuasively argues, we need to become empowered decision-makers, capable of making high-stakes choices and holding accountable those who advise us. In Eyes Wide Open, she weaves together scientific research with real-world examples from Hollywood to Harry Potter, NASA to World War Two spies, to construct a path to more astute and empowered decision-making in ten clear steps. With a razor-sharp intellect and an instinct for popular storytelling, she offers counter-intuitive, actionable guidance for making better choices—whether you are a business-person, a professional, a patient, or a parent.

A Theory of the Consumption Function

Milton Friedman
What is the exact nature of the consumption function? Can this term be defined so that it will be consistent with empirical evidence and a valid instrument in the hands of future economic researchers and policy makers? In this volume a distinguished American economist presents a new theory of the consumption function, tests it against extensive statistical J material and suggests some of its significant implications. Central to the new theory is its sharp distinction between two concepts of income, measured income, or that which is recorded for a particular period, and permanent income, a longer-period concept in terms of which consumers decide how much to spend and how much to save. Milton Friedman suggests that the total amount spent on consumption is on the average the same fraction of permanent income, regardless of the size of permanent income. The magnitude of the fraction depends on variables such as interest rate, degree of uncertainty relating to occupation, ratio of wealth to income, family size, and so on. The hypothesis is shown to be consistent with budget studies and time series data, and some of its far-reaching implications are explored in the final chapter.

The Big Con The True Story of how Washington Got Hoodwinked and Hijacked by Crackpot Economics

Jonathan Chait
American politics has been hijacked. Over the past three decades, a fringe group of economic hucksters has corrupted and perverted our nation's policies. With dark, engaging wit, Jonathan Chait reveals how these canny zealots first took over the Republican Party and then gamed the political system and the media so that once unthinkable policies--without a shred of academic, expert, or even popular support--now drive the political agenda, regardless of which party is in power. Why have these ideas succeeded in Washington? How did a clique of extremists gain control of American economic policy and sell short the country's future? And why do their outlandish ideas still determine policy despite repeated electoral setbacks? Chait tells the outrageous and eye-opening story, expertly explaining just how politics and economics work in Washington. He has produced a riveting drama of greed and deceit that should be read by every concerned citizen, especially in an election year.

Gender and the Politics of History

Joan Wallach Scott
This landmark work from a renowned feminist historian is a foundational demonstration of the uses of gender as a conceptual tool for cultural and historical analysis. Joan Wallach Scott offers a trenchant critique of the compartmentalization of women's history, arguing that political and social categories are always fundamentally shaped by gender and that questions of gender are essential to considerations of difference in history. Exploring topics ranging from language and class to the politics of work and family, Gender and the Politics of History is a vital contribution to feminist history and historical methodology that also speaks more broadly to the ongoing redefinition of gender in our political and cultural vocabularies. This anniversary edition of a classic text in feminist theory and history shows the evergreen relevance of Scott's work to the humanities and social sciences. In a new preface, Scott reflects on the book's legacy and implications for contemporary politics as well as what she has reconsidered as a result of her engagement with psychoanalytic theory. The book also includes a previously unpublished essay, "The Conundrum of Equality," which takes up the question of affirmative action.

Wall Street Versus America A Muckraking Look at the Thieves, Fakers, and Charlatans Who Are Ripping You Off

Gary Weiss
A shocking appraisal that shows how Wall Street is intrinsically corrupt—and what individual investors can do to protect themselves For several years high-profile corporate wrongdoers have been vilified by the media. Yet the problem, according to Gary Weiss, is not just a few isolated instances of malfeasance. The problem is in the very fabric of Wall Street and its practices that enable and even encourage corruption—practices that are so pervasive and so difficult to combat that they are in effect perfect crimes, with the small investor left holding the bag. In this blistering report from the front, Weiss describes how the ethos of Mafia chophouses, boiler rooms, and penny stock peddlers now permeates all of Wall Street. Protected from investor lawsuits by laughably corrupt arbitration systems, Wall Street firms are free to fleece unsuspecting clients with little or no risk. But as this empowering book shows, ordinary investors can fight back and come out on top—if they learn to recognize warning signs, filter media chatter, and spot looming corporate meltdowns in advance. Prepare to be surprised, get angry, and then get even. Wall Street Versus America is a wild ride you can’t afford to miss.
