Solitary The Crash, Captivity and Comeback of an Ace Fighter Pilot

Giora Romm
"I am dangling beneath my parachute. Gazing down from a height of 10,000 feet, knowing I am going to be killed in less than fifteen minutes, I feel great sorrow for myself. None of my fellow pilots who've parachuted into the Nile Delta have survived the encounter with the welcoming committee below, and I have no reason to think my fate will be any different." -- Giora Romm, Solitary "Giora Romm's Solitary seized me from the opening paragraph. Yes, the storytelling is spellbinding, but it is Romm's explication of the theme of the fall, ordeal and self-resurrection that places his book not only among the finest war writing ever but, like Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, alongside the most profound reflections on the resilience and capacity of the human soul." -Steven Pressfield, bestselling author of Gates of Fire and The War of Art In June 1967, Lt. Giora Romm shot down five MiGs in the Six Day War. This remarkable feat made Romm, at twenty-two years old, the Israeli Air Force's first fighter ace. Just two years and a half years later, in another dogfight, Romm's Mirage jet was shot down over the Nile Delta. With one arm broken and the opposite leg shattered by violent ejection from the aircraft, Romm collected himself and prepared for the worst. If his captors discovered his "Hero of the Six Day War" identity, Romm would become the most prized propaganda tool in the Arab-Israeli conflict, bar none. How he maintained his sanity in solitary confinement, in a plaster cast that extended from his toes to his chest, while suffering beatings and daily interrogation, strains comprehension. Solitary is destined to become mandatory reading not just at military academies and synagogues, but in hospices, rehabilitation centers and creative writing programs around the world.

Microorganisms to Combat Pollution

E. Rosenberg
This volume contains material first presented at an international workshop on the 'Use of Microorganisms to Combat Pollution', held in Israel, May 10--18, 1992. The workshop was sponsored by the Bat-Sheva de Rothschild Foundation for the Advancement of Science and included microbiologists, biochemists and geneticists from universities, environmental agencies and the military. Each of the contributors to this volume is an ack nowledged expert on the treatment of one or more types of pollution using microorganisms or their enzymes. This book differs from most published symposia proceedings in the breadth of coverage of each subject. Most of the chapters are divided into three parts: (a) A general presentation of the source and toxicity of the pollutant, (b) a review of the current state-of-the-science on the biodegradation of that pollutant and (c) the authors' unique research experiences on the problem. In several examples, the authors have presented data from both laboratory studies and field trials. Thus, the book contains not only the theoretical background on the biodegradation of pollutants, but also practical experiences in applying this knowledge to solving significant pollution problems.

The Conquest of Space

David Lasser
David Lasser stands as one of the least-known but extraordinary pioneers of spaceflight. In 1930 he founded the American Interplanetary Society (AIAA) -- the same year he wrote this book -- the first book ever written in the English language to address the notion of spaceflight as a serious possibility. The book has not been in print since 1931 and yet it still stands up to scrutiny. The lucid style with which Lasser explains the basic concepts of rocketry make it a delight for anyone to read.

Polymers, phosphors, and voltaics for radioisotope microbatteries

Kenneth E. Bower,Yuri A. Barbanel,Yuri G. Shreter
Representing the collective effort of over 30 leading scientists in Russia and the United States, this is the first book written solely on the subject of nuclear batteries. It presents a rich historical discussion and original research on the conversion of nuclear materials into electrical power, which can then be harvested to make long-lasting, more energy efficient batteries. With this technology, power-matched supplies would last decades - even centuries - using safe, direct, long-life, stable, integrated electric power from the highest energy density source available. Polymers, Phosphors, and Voltaics for Radioisotope Microbatteries presents the state-of-the-art in interdisciplinary research in radiochemistry, tritium storage, semiconductor fabrication and characterization, nuclear battery fabrication and testing, integration into MEMS and other electronic devices, and much more. A key feature of this book is its discussion of construction materials for miniaturized radioisotope power supplies, since progress in nuclear battery technology depends on characterization of functionally radiation-stable components. Though substantial progress has been made to solve problems of using integrated radioisotope batteries for micro- and nanoelectronics, each author has provided an authoritative assessment and has indicated where development is needed. Research in this area has the potential to revolutionize the microelectronics industry by enabling MEMS and nanotechnology. Significant technological progress depends today on coordinated interdisciplinary research. Polymers, Phosphors, and Voltaics for Radioisotope Microbatteries contains diverse discussions of the problems of using radioactive material for microelectronic power needs and guides readers to future research in the area of long-life, high energy-density batteries.

Optics and the theory of electrons

Pauli, Wolfgang
In the 1950s, the distinguished theoretical physicist Wolfgang Pauli delivered a trademark series of lectures at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of classical and modern physics was painstakingly recorded not only by his students but also by a number of collaborators whose carefully edited transcriptions resulted in a remarkable six-volume work. This volume, the second of the series, focusing on optics and the theory of electrons, examines geometrical optics, the theory of interference and diffraction, Maxwell's Theory, crystal optics, and molecular optics. As does each volume in the series, this book includes an index and a wealth of helpful figures, and can be read independently of the series by those who wish to focus on a particular topic.

Contact With Space Oranur; Second Report 1951 - 1956

Wilhelm Reich
Wilhelm Reich's final publication, Contact With Space contains the result of six years of intensive research and field work: a natural scientific account of and the basis of practical measures for combating the DOR emergency. This volume is an exposition of the newest developments in the technology of Cosmic Orgone Engineering, which involve the use of "Spacegun," an extension of the cloudbuster made possible by the discovery of ORUR.During Reich's scientific expedition to southern Arizona (1954-1955)--which he documents in this book--it was Cosmic Orgone Engineering that caused desert land to turn green with prairie grass. Here Reich submits a natural scientific explanation of the metabolism of the Life Energy, a study which goes into the nature of primal vegetation, and the nature of dying or death of vegetation, i.e., desert development.Nature being one, Contact With Space examines the new basic energetic facts brought into the open by the Oranur Experiment in terms of the various branches of science into which they ramify: biophysics, Oranur medicine, astrophysics, meteorology, chemistry and pre-atomic chemistry, space technology, man's reactions to these events, etc. It also deals with the methods of the functional scientist.Written under unrelenting attack from conspiratorial commercial interests, this book gives some of the background into the difficult social and physical milieu in which this research was done, and conveys the excitement of the adventures that began the cosmic or "atomic" age.

T. C. De Leon
Excerpt from Four Years in Rebel Capitals: An Inside View of Life in the Southern Confederacy, From Birth to Death; From Original Notes, Collated in the Years 1861 to 1865 Fortunate, indeed, is the reader who takes up a volume without preface; of which the persons are left to enact their own drama and the author does not come before the curtain, like the chorus of Greek tragedy, to speak for them. But, in printing the pages that follow, it may seem needful to ask that they be taken for what they are simple sketches of the inner life of Rebeldom' -behind its Chinese wall of wood and steel during those unexampled four years of its existence. Remember this

Poliakoff, Stephen
Stephen Poliakoff 'has been one of our sharpest and least predictable writers for the past twenty years' (Daily Telegraph) In his new play, Remember This, Stephen Poliakoff looks at the insidious role that technology plays in all our lives. The video camera becomes an interruption in the daily existence of Rick and Victoria and their friends and relations as the couple prepare for their wedding, to such an extent that the video diary they are recording begins to take over their lives. If events have not been recorded they have not been lived. Their memory of events is only what exists on tape for an audience to see or hear. When the stress of modern living reaches a critical peak, Rick's forsakes real life for one totally imagined. Remembering becomes harder and harder."Stephen Poliakoff addresses the problem of the amnesia that threatens to overtake us all, as a hundred different developments - social, cultural, technological - conspire to cut us off from the past" (Sunday Telegraph); "His social observations often have a deadly accuracy" (Guardian)

Repeated Games with Incomplete Information

Robert J. Aumann,Michael Maschler
During the height of the Cold War, between 1965 and 1968, Robert Aumann, Michael Maschler, and Richard Stearns collaborated on researchon the dynamics of arms control negotiations that has since become foundational to work on repeated games. These five seminal papers are collected here for the first time, with the addition of "postscripts" describing many of the developments since the papers were written. During the height of the Cold War, between 1965 and 1968, Robert Aumann, Michael Maschler, and Richard Stearns collaborated on research on the dynamics of arms control negotiations that has since become foundational to work on repeated games. These five seminal papers are collected here for the first time, with the addition of "postscripts" describing many of the developments since the papers were written. The basic model studied throughout the book is one in which players ignorant about the game being played must learn what they can from the actions of the others. The original work, done under contract to the United States Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, was intended to tackle the gradual disarmament problem, in which neither player knew what his own payoff would be for any given agreement, because of uncertainty about the other side's arsenal and weapons production technology. But the research soon became much more generalized, covering information concealment and revelation, signaling and learning, and related ideas in any repeated competitive situation. The first four chapters of the book treat the competitive zero-sum side of the theory of repeated games. Chapter five takes up cooperative phenomena where one player may want to signal information to another. An extensive bibliography covers all items mentioned in the main text, in the postscripts, and in the introduction. The bibliography also includes a compilation of published papers and books that refer to the original reports.
