Railroads and Regulations, 1877-1916

Gabriel Kolko
This examination of the relationship of the economy to political process in the United States from 1877 to 1916 shows how the railroad industry encouraged and relied on national politics to solve its economic problems, and created a precedent for government regulation of the economy in the twentieth century. The continuity in governmental regulation from 1877 to 1900, in the Progressive Era, and in the administrations of Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson are pointed out. The origin of each major federal railroad act and contending forces is analyzed. Federal regulation of the railroads, probably the most important example of federal intervention in the economy from the Civil War to World War I is used as a key in reassessing the motives behind Progressivism. North-South and South-South: essays on international economics

Stewart, Frances
'...an important and timely contribution to the study of South-South economic relations. It provides a cogent and detailed analysis...'-Henock Kifle, South Letter '...provides some interesting insights into the determinants and consequences of South-South trade.'- Frances Stewart, The World Economy 'This comprehensive, incisive work....represents both historical depth and topical breadth. ....This well-written analysis makes an important contribution to development studies, including development economics and development geography.'- Georges G. Cravins, The Journal of Asian Studies These essays explore interactions between North and South and South and South in trade, technology and finance, focusing on the interests of the South, and particularly the poor. The 'conventional' neo-classical approach is shown to have many theoretical deficiences, the consequences are often harmful to Southern interests, while the poor are neglected. The author concludes that the South should adopt a bargaining approach to N-S negotiations and urges for closer South-South relations in trade, technology and finance.

The Fugitive Being Memoirs of a Wanderer in Search of a Home (Classic Reprint)

Ezra S. Brudno
Excerpt from The Fugitive: Being Memoirs of a Wanderer in Search of a Home However, as a hint to lovers of chronological research, I shall state that in the place where I first saw light, the famous Corsican, in his escape from cold Russia, is said to have changed horses. So, after all, my native town deserves a place in the world's history almost as important as that accorded to Austerlitz. For if chance had ordained other wise and the great conqueror had not found Speedy trotters in my birthplace, think what a change in the nineteenth century! A Theory of Harmony

Ernst Levy
In this introduction to natural-base music theory, Ernst Levy presents the essentials of a comprehensive, consistent theory of harmony developed from tone structure. A Theory of Harmony is a highly original explanation of the harmonic language of the last few centuries, showing the way toward an understanding of diverse styles of music. Basic harmony texts exists, but none supply help to students seeking threads of logic in the field. In a text abundantly illustrated with musical examples, Levy makes clear the few principles that illuminate the natural forces in harmony. He shows that general principles can be successfully extracted from the wealth of examples. This book actually provides a theory of harmony. One of the major musical minds of the twentieth century, Ernst Levy was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1895. His musical career spanned more than seven decades, from his first public piano performance at age six. A naturalized U.S. citizen, he lived here from 1941 to 1966, teaching at the New England Conservatory, the University of Chicago, Bennington College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Brooklyn College. After his retirement Levy returned to Switzerland, where he continued to compose until his death in 1981. He was an enormously productive composer, with hundreds of works to his credit, including symphonies, string quartets, songs in English, French, and German, and music for solo instruments and small ensembles. His piano recordings, particularly of the last Beethoven sonatas and the Liszt sonata, have become collectors' items. He thought of himself as a successor to Reimann, immediately, and Rameau, more remotely.

Accelerated Disruption

Eric Lefkofsky
Disruptive businesses are born every day. Someone has a great idea that offers a better choice in terms of price, convenience, service or functionality, and for a moment, they hold the keys to the remaking of an entire industry. Yet many of these businesses let advantage slip through their hands over time because they fail to realize that the fast pace of technology allows a challenge to come from anywhere - large competitors or startups -- and overtake them in an instant. This is Accelerated Disruption. It is business development moving at the speed of the next technological advancement. Businesses that can understand and control the forces of technology will thrive in the coming years. Those that cannot will find themselves displaced. Accelerated Disruption deals with the following critical startup concepts and more: * Choosing the right industries to innovate * Understanding the concept of pain in an industry and turning it to competitive advantage * Using the strength of conventional wisdom to investigate a disruptive idea and test it under the radar * Getting the best out of your people through smart automation * Turning your customer base into a sophisticated R&D team * Mastering the art of quick-release product improvements * Promoting your idea in the face of industry and investor resistance * Developing a capital strategy that supports your business during critical stages of development Author Eric Lefkofsky, a Chicago entrepreneur who helped found five technology startups worth more than a billion dollars, explains how disruptive businesses are formed, grown and sustained and provides an intellectual and conceptual framework for making your idea a reality.

Abraham Lincoln and the Outbreak of the Civil War Address Delivered by Colonel David N. Foster, February 17, 1929, Before the First Presbyterian Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana (Classic Reprint)

David N. Foster
Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Outbreak of the Civil War: Address Delivered by Colonel David N. Foster, February 17, 1929, Before the First Presbyterian Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana This great country of ours has had such a marvelous growth that the men and women of today do not fully comprehend how very young it is. I am reminded by this occasion of my father taking me when a child of but eight years of age to a Fourth of July celebration, held at Washington's Headquarters, at Newburgh, New York, where Washington was quartered during one of the winters of the Revolutionary War. After we had listened to the address of the orator of the 'day, they brought forward on the platform a tottering old man and introduced him to us as Mr. Usual Knapp, the last surviving member of Washington's body guard. That I should have had the privilege of seeing a member of Washington's body guard and of shaking his hand is to you a somewhat impressive illustration of how few years have passed since the Revolutionary War. If you add to the 88 years that I have lived, another life as long as mine it will take you back to 1754, more than two decades before the Declaration of Independence. In less, therefore. L'Étude Moderne de la Harpe Considérations Générales Sur L'Instrument, Avec Cinq Études Poëtiques Pour Harpe Seule; Modern Study of the Harp, General Survey of the Instrument, with Five Poetical Studies for the Harp Alone (Classic Reprint)

Carlos Salzedo
Excerpt from L'étude Moderne De La Harpe: Considérations Générales Sur L'instrument, Avec Cinq Études Poëtiques Pour Harpe Seule; Modern Study of the Harp, General Survey of the Instrument, With Five Poetical Studies for the Harp Alone Regarding harpists, the aim of these studies is to offer them something of a decisively musical nature, by means of which they will accustom themselves to the different details of a mechanical order, to the art of phrasing, and to the multiple sonorities of their instrument. These studies can be employed by novices as well as by virtuosi. Harpists of little experience will find in every measure something which will advantageously replace the contents of uninteresting and tiresome books of exercises. They must pay no attention to the metronomic signs, which are meant only for those who intend to play these works in public. Individually, these studies are not restricted to the technical peculiarities suggested by their titles. Each one contains chords of various kinds and har monic tones (double and single), so that one can de ve10p several types of technique from the same study. The Higher Learning, the Universities, and the Public (Princeton Legacy Library, 1881)

Kaysen, Carl
The growth of American universities has outstripped private resources and forced them to rely increasingly on public funds, especially federal funds. Carl Kaysen asserts that the basis on which the growing public support has been given in recent years does not correspond to what the universities are actually doing, and he surmises that the nature of our governmental processes is such that a discrepancy of this sort cannot long persist. He examines the justification for public support of science and learning and he considers the intellectual and political limits of these justifications. Are they right? To whom do they appeal, and how powerfully?Originally published in 1969.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. The Bourbaki gambit: a novel

Djerassi, Carl
This novel, like Jurassic Park , hinges on the real-world technology incorporated in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), one of the most important breakthroughs in biomedical science. The 1993 Nobel Prize in chemistry recognized the immense significance of PCR, which is a process for quickly generating and then infinitely replicating fragments of genetic material. An impostor takes all of the credit in Carl Djerassi's fictionalized account of PCR's discovery and development. As the scientific community eventually discovers, Professor Diana Skordylis is not really one of their own, she is four of their own--three men and a woman--who publish their collaborative work under the Skordylis pseudonym. Two of them American, one Japanese, and one Austrian, they average around sixty-five years of age. Their archetype is a famous group of French mathematicians who actually have been publishing collectively for several decades under the nom de plume of Nicolas Bourbaki. Revenge is the Skordylis group's initial motivation. Victims of subtle age discrimination, they have all seen their research budgets and faculty privileges curtailed; two have been forcibly retired. Each Skordylis project they complete, each paper they publish under her name, is a satisfying poke at a scientific community that marginalized its senior members. But PCR is different. It is not only their best work, it is among the best work done by any scientist in recent memory. Professional jealousy soon threatens Diana Skordylis's life, as some group members struggle with the urge to claim their share of the fame and separately seek out PCR's most innovative applications. Djerassi writes engagingly--and from experience--about the collaborative nature at the heart of the scientific enterprise and the desire for personal recognition in the hearts of most scientists; about the graying of Western science; and about the human frailties and humanistic concerns of its practitioners.

The many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics: a fundamental exposition

Bryce Seligman Dewitt,Neill Graham
A novel interpretation of quantum mechanics, first proposed in brief form by Hugh Everett in 1957, forms the nucleus around which this book has developed. In his interpretation, Dr. Everett denies the existence of a separate classical realm and asserts the propriety of considering a state vector for the whole universe. Because this state vector never collapses, reality as a whole is rigorously deterministic. This reality, which is described jointly by the dynamical variables and the state vector, is not the reality customarily perceived; rather, it is a reality composed of many worlds. By virtue of the temporal development of the dynamical variables, the state vector decomposes naturally into orthogonal vectors, reflecting a continual splitting of the universe into a multitude of mutually unobservable but equally real worlds, in each of which every good measurement has yielded a definite result, and in most of which the familiar statistical quantum laws hold. The volume contains Dr. Everett's short paper from 1957, "'Relative State' Formulation of Quantum Mechanics," and a far longer exposition of his interpretation, entitled "The Theory of the Universal Wave Function," never before published. In addition, other papers by Wheeler, DeWitt, Graham, and Cooper and Van Vechten provide further discussion of the same theme. Together, they constitute virtually the entire world output of scholarly commentary on the Everett interpretation.Originally published in 1973.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Revolution and reality: essays on the origin and fate of the Soviet system

Wolfe, Bertram D.
Disillusioned by communism as a young man, Wolfe devoted his life to the study and writing of Russian history. These essays show how clearly he understood the precious quality of freedom and the durability of despotism as it is experienced under totalitarian governments. His analyses of the contemporary Soviet scene, though often at odds with prevailing opinion, have repeatedly proven to be correct.Originally published in 1981.A UNC Press Enduring Edition -- UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. The anatomy of a little war: a diplomatic and military history of the Gundovald affair (568-586)

Bachrach, Bernard S.
In the late sixth century Gundovald, a Frank of royal blood, returned from a lengthy exile in Italy and Constantinople to establish a regnum in the southwestern part of Gaul. His half brother, Guntram, who ruled the neighboring Burgundian region, vigorously opposed this intrusion. In this fascinating narrative, Bernard Bachrach provides a comprehensive reinterpretation of the dramatic attempt by Gundovald to succeed to the Merovingian throne with the help of the Byzantine Empire. Gundovald, a Merovingian prince, was rejected by his father, King Chlotar I, and declared not to be of royal blood. His association with the Byzantine Empire led Guntram to regard him as an "imperial puppet." In addition to examining the highly controversial diplomatic machinations behind Gundovald's bid for power, Bachrach breaks new ground with a thorough assessment of the strategy, tactics, and military technology of the "little war" fought between Gundovald's supporters and the armies of King Guntram. This conflict ended with the siege of the old Roman fortress city of Convenae in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Revolt in Japan: the young officers and the February 26, 1936 incident

Shillony, Ben-Ami
"Revere the Emperor, Destroy the Traitors"-armed with this slogan, on February 26, 1936. Rebellious Japanese troops led by members of the Young Officers' Movement seized the center of Tokyo and murdered several prominent officials. The Young Officers wanted a "Showa Restoration" whereby political and economic power would be restored to the Emperor and people. The privileged classes were to be abolished, wealth redistributed, and the state, rather than big business, was to control the economy. Although the rebellion was suppressed in four days, it dramatized ideological clashes and factional strife within the Imperial Army and the tensions between civil and military authorities. The incident still stirs emotions in Japan and fascinates Japanese writers; Mishima Yukio, the famous novelist who committed suicide by seppuku in 1970, was a great admirer of the Young Officers. This exciting account by Ben-Ami Shillony includes the first full examination of the backgrounds and ideologies of the leaders, and discusses the crucial roles of such figures as the Emperor himself and his brother Prince Chichibu.Originally published in 1973.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Codrescu, Andrei
"The Poetry Lesson is a must-have manual for emerging poetry-monsters; a book of caveats for the peddlers of "creative" snake oil; an archaeo-psychological scan of instantly obsolete technology; the memoir of a professor relectantly abandoning his sex fantasies; the collected portrait of deluded youth about to find out something horrific; an affectionate treatise on poetry as a cure of hubris; and a de profundis moan of flesh turning into fortune cookies" --Cover, p. 4.
