2284: world society, Iaian Vernier's memoir

Itzkoff, Seymour W.
2284: World Society, Iaian Vernier's Memoir is a fascinating study of mankind. Written as a work of fiction, it looks at the human condition 200 years in the future. Predicting the outcome of today's social policies, 2284 is a cultural anthropology study that adds to Itzkoff's extensive writing on the topic. Iaian Vernier writes in 2284 of the revolutionary internationalism that has been established in Nairobi, Africa. He chronicles the disasters that almost destroyed the twenty-first-century world. He describes in anecdote and philosophical depth the new scientific and secular world that has been established to bring peace, equality, ethnic diversity and democracy to humanity, while scrutinizing the plans for demographic stability that will sustain humanity into the future. In the twenty-third century, the forbidden rationality of the scientific minds of the twenty-first century have been unleashed.

Walter Gilbert: Selected Works

Walter Gilbert
This book commemorates the eclectic intellectual life of scientist and artist Walter Gilbert. It presents all of his most influential works throughout his scientific career. His scientific explorations covered a broad spectrum of fields: theoretical physics; molecular biology, from finding messenger RNA to elucidating the regulation of the lac operon to understanding DNA replication; gene evolution and origin of life; genomics; bioinformatics; and beyond. He created widely used concepts such as 'Exon', 'Intron' and 'RNA World'. Eleven reflective essays by Gilbert are included for the first time, discussing both his scientific studies and anecdotes from his own life. These firsthand accounts record the historical and intellectual contexts for his most monumental scientific discoveries, including his Nobel Prize-winning sequencing method. Memorial chapters, contributed by Gilbert Laboratory alumni, describe the passion, ambition, and efforts of Gilbert and several generations of young scientists under his leadership. Finally, the book collects a few fine pieces of artwork created by Gilbert in recent years. It documents a life of genius and creativity that could inspire others for years to come.

A conception of teaching

Gage, Nathaniel L.
The Publisher notes with profound regret that Nathaniel "Nate" Lees Gage, a Stanford professor emeritus of education who has been called the "father of modern research on teaching," died Aug. 17 at Stanford Hospital. He was 91. After everything else has been done and provided—the money raised; the schools erected; the curricula developed; the administrators, supervisors, and teachers trained; the parents and other citizens consulted—we come to teaching, where all of it makes contact with students, and the teacher influences students’ knowledge, understanding, appreciations, and attitudes in what we hope will be desirable ways. Teaching is well-nigh the point of the whole educational enterprise and establishment aimed at producing student learning. The literature of the behavioral and social sciences is full of theory and research on learning and memory. Teaching is comparatively a stepchild, neglected by those who have built a formidable body of theories of learning and memory. However, teaching is where learning and memory theory should pay off. A Conception of Teaching dedicates a chapter to each of the following important components: the need for a theory; the possibility of a theory; the evolution of a paradigm for the study of teaching; a conception of the process of teaching; a conception of the content of teaching; a conception of students’ cognitive capabilities and motivations; a conception of classroom management; and the integration of these conceptions. Written in a highly accessible style, while maintaining a base in research, Dr. Nathaniel L. Gage presents A Conception of Teaching with clarity and well situated within current educational debates.

I never knew what time it was

Antin, David
In this series of intricately related texts, internationally known poet, critic, and performance artist David Antin explores the experience of time―how it's felt, remembered, and recounted. These free-form talk pieces―sometimes called talk poems or simply talks―began as improvisations at museums, universities, and poetry centers where Antin was invited to come and think out loud. Serious and playful, they move rapidly from keen analysis to powerful storytelling to passages of pure comedy, as they range kaleidoscopically across Antin's experiences: in the New York City of his childhood and youth, the Eastern Europe of family and friends, and the New York and Southern California of his art and literary career. The author's analysis and abrasive comedy have been described as a mix of Lenny Bruce and Ludwig Wittgenstein, his commitment to verbal invention and narrative as a fusion of Mark Twain and Gertrude Stein. Taken together, these pieces provide a rich oral history of and critical context for the evolution of the California art scene from the 1960s onward.

Bluebirds

Catulle Mendès
Bluebirds by Catulle Mendès (1841-1909), here delightfully translated for the first time into English by Brian Stableford, is fascinating, not only because it illustrates a particular evolution within the pattern of the author's own works, but because that pattern reflects a more general one associated with the evolution from the French Romanticism of the first half of the nineteenth century to the Decadent and Symbolist Movements of the fin-de-siècle. Mendès was one of the key figures in the latter phases of that process of development, launching his literary career in the 1860s under the patronage of Théophile Gautier, whose daughter Judith he married--much against her father's wishes--in 1866, and then becoming a leading figure among the "Parnassians" who attempted a renewal and revivification of Romantic ideals, before he entered wholeheartedly into the Decadent Movement launched in the 1880s. The stories in the present collection extend over a linear spectrum, moving by degrees from the affected sentimentality of Romanticism to a darker and somewhat jaundiced world-view that illustrates the Decadent sensibility very well, although all the stories were written in advance of the enormous fashionability that the sensibility in question achieved in the late 1880s.

A Darwinian Reading of Bill Kohn's Painting

Robert E. Kohn
Bill Kohn's painting, Udaipur Tinsmiths, underlies the 45,000-year history of representational art, beginning with the evolutionarily maladaptive cave paintings and concluding with the starkly abstract and two-dimensional modernistic paintings that exemplify the utopian metanarrative of Clement Greenberg that postmodernism soundly repudiated. That particular repudiation may have been the only misjudgment by posmodernism because the modernistic art thrived into the 21st century. Unfortunately if crowded out from museum walls newer figurative, three-dimensional paintings more rich in content and mystery.

Theory of Functionals: And of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations

Volterra, Vito,Fantappiè, Luigi
"Theory of Functionals: And of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations" is a foundational treatise in the field of mathematical analysis, representing the culmination of Vito Volterra's pioneering research into the calculus of variations and the generalization of functions. As one of the most significant figures in late 19th and early 20th-century mathematics, Volterra introduces a systematic approach to functionals-functions that depend on other functions-providing a rigorous framework for what is now known as functional analysis. The work explores the properties of integral and integro-differential equations, detailing their development and their profound implications for both pure mathematics and mathematical physics. Volterra examines the transition from finite-dimensional space to infinite-dimensional space, offering insights into the behavior of systems where the current state depends on past history. Edited and expanded from his influential lectures, this volume serves as an essential resource for understanding the historical development of modern analysis. It remains a vital reference for mathematicians and physicists interested in the evolution of linear operators and the mathematical modeling of complex physical phenomena. Continuity And Change In Rural Russia A Geographical Perspective

Ioffe, G. V.
Contrary to the viewpoint of many Western scholars, the authors of this penetrating analysis argue that private farming is not a viable option in Russia's future. Instead, a convergence of Soviet-style subsidiary farming with traditional and reorganized collective farms is the most plausible path of evolution in most rural areas.Grigory Ioffe and Tatyana Nefedova arrive at this conclusion by a careful examination of ongoing reform efforts in Russian agriculture against the backdrop of European and Russian agrarian history and rural spatial development since the late nineteenth century. The comparisons at the national level are then filled in with consideration of a number of Russian provinces (oblasti) and regions (raiony). Their research reveals the substantial negative impact of rural depopulation on the Russian agrarian economy. Seventy original maps richly complement and support the narrative.
