Ladies and Gentlemen... Lenny Bruce

Albert Goldman
Why is this book more engrossing than Goldman's biographies about Elvis & John Lennon? Mainly because both of them had been done thoroughly during their lifetimes. When the books came out, most who cared to read them already knew most of the contents. Not so with this book on comic Lenny Bruce. He died in 1966, his personal life unknown to most, mainly because his act was considered unfit for decent audiences & was ignored by the media.Goldman gets much of his material from reporter Lawrence Schiller (the cover says, "by Albert Goldman from the journalism of Lawrence Schiller"). The book explores Bruce's youth as Leonard Alfred Schneider, his showbiz-oriented mother, quietly serious father & strange relationship with his stripper wife Honey. Goldman & Schiller analyze Bruce's comedy & whence it came, believing this the key to understanding Bruce himself. The book progresses thru Bruce's difficult 1st years in Manhattan nightclubs, then moves to LA &, finally, San Francisco, where Bruce became a star. It also deals with the comic's insatiable appetite for IV drugs, his fall from a San Francisco hotel room & the legal battles which haunted him till his death.

Narcissism: denial of the true self

Lowen, Alexander
A groundbreaking, “thoughtful and provocative” ( Los Angeles Times ) study of narcissism that will relieve hidden anxieties and heal the tension between mind, body, and feelings. Are you a narcissist? Do you interact with someone who is? Contrary to popular belief, narcissists do not love themselves or anyone else. They cannot accept their true selves, constructing instead fixed masks that hide emotional numbness. Influenced by forces in culture and predisposed by factors in the human personality, narcissists tend to be: - More concerned with how they appear than what they feel. - Seductive and manipulative, striving for power and control. - Egotists, focused on their own interests but lacking the true values of the self—self-expression, self-possession, dignity, and integrity. - Without a solid sense of self, which leads them to experience life as empty and meaningless. In this groundbreaking study, Dr. Alexander Lowen uses his extensive clinical experience to demonstrate how narcissists can recover their suppressed feelings and regain their lost humanity. By the use of Bioenergetic Analysis, the psychotherapy created by Dr. Lowen, a new possibility of a fulfilling and authentic life is presented for people with narcissistic characteristics and for those who interact with them.

Problems of Neurosis; a Book of Case Histories

Alfred Adler
THE science of Individual Psychology teaches us that the leit-motif of all neurosis and conflict is a sense of discouragement and inferiority. But the keynote of the practice of Individual Psychology is that "benevolent comradeship" which Adler tells us should characterize the attitude of the physician towards his patient. The sincerity of this utterance, and its full significance, can hardly be better known than by the Pupil, who has been asked, by the Teacher, to write some foreword to the latter's own work. Perhaps in such case the Pupil may he thought to fulfil his duty best in attempting to set out something he has learned, which others may wish to know.

Elvis and the birth of rock and roll

Wertheimer, Alfred
""Elvis who?" was photographer Alfred Wertheimer's response when, in early 1956, an RCA Victor publicist asked him to photograph an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis. Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old, Elvis Presley was -- as we now know -- about to become a legend. Trailing Presley like a shadow, Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom. Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope, Wertheimer's Elvis project immortalized a young man in the very process of making history.... [this book] collects Wertheimer's most remarkable Elvis shots from that magical year, along with a selection of his historic 1958 pictures of the star being shipped off to an army base in Germany. Each chapter is illustrated with a poster by Hatch Show Print, one of the oldest letterpress print shops in America, which created many early Elvis posters in the 1950s."--Provided by publisher

Elvis

Wertheimer, Alfred
In 1956, a twenty-one-year-old singer named Elvis Presley was at the beginning of his remarkable career. Alfred Wertheimer, a young New York photojournalist, was asked by Elvis’s new label, RCA Victor, to photograph their new artist. In the course of his one-day assignment for RCA, Wertheimer was struck by the stunningly photogenic performer and felt compelled to continue documenting the everyday moments in Elvis’s life during that crucial year. Wertheimer’s unobtrusive photographs of Elvis in performance, with his fans, in the recording studio, and at home with his family present a unique look at one of the world’s most famous cultural figures. These images were the first and the last unguarded look at Elvis, and also constitute an important visual document of post–World War II America. With hundreds of gorgeously reproduced high-quality prints, Elvis is the result of a special alchemy between an exceptionally talented photographer and a charismatic young man on the brink of superstardom.
